1 Corpus Christi (36-28, 79-54) at Frisco (35-30, 59-76) Thursday, August 30, 2018 Dr Pepper Ballpark Frisco, TX 7:05 p.m. ON THE RECORD: Home Road Series 10-4 Sweeps L 3 Streak 2-3 Last Last 10 RIDERS TIGHTEN RACE: Pedro Payano scattered three hits over six innings Wednesday night leading the RoughRiders to a 6-0 triumph over Corpus Christi at Dr Pepper Ballpark. The Hooks now lead Frisco by 1.5 games with five to play in the Texas League South second-half pennant race. Corpus Christi right-hander Brandan Bielak spread three runs over the first five innings. The Riders plated a pair in the third on RBI singles by Jose Cardona and Josh Morgan. A lead-off walk to Eliezer Alvarez keyed the rally. In the fourth, doubles by Preston Beck and Luis Mendez made it 3-0 Riders. The Hooks best scoring chance was in the second. Taylor Jones cracked an infield single to begin the frame. Jones raced to third when Abraham Toro smoked a double off the right-field wall. Randy Cesar was next and worked a walk. Payano, who was making a spot start in place of Jonathan Hernandez, escaped the bases-loaded jam by recording two strikeouts and a comebacker to the hill. Payano retired 14 of the final 16 men he faced. Adam Parks permitted two baserunners over two innings and C.D. Pelham sidestepped a two-out walk in the ninth. Frisco salted the game by scoring three unearned runs against Alex Winkelman in the eighth. Alvarez, who homered last night, sealed the inning with a two-run single to center. 2 PAGE 2 HONOR ROLL: Pitchers Ryan Hartman and Corbin Martin and third baseman Randy Cesar represent Corpus Christi on the 2018 Texas League Postseason All-Star Team. The roster was revealed by league president Tim Purpura this afternoon. Hartman is a win away from matching Kyle Westwood, Sergio Perez, and Josh Miller for third on the Hooks single-season list. Hartman s 134 strikeouts are the second-most by a Corpus Christi pitcher in a single campaign. Jason Hirsh struck out 165 en route to 2005 Texas League Pitcher of the Year honors. Martin, selected by Houston in the second round of the 2017 draft out of Texas A&M, stands 7-2 with a 2.78 ERA and.216 batting average against in 20 Corpus Christi assignments (17 starts). After a rocky Double-A debut, the 22-year-old righthander has won seven of eight decisions while compiling a 2.23 ERA. Cesar established a new Texas League record by hitting safely in 42 consecutive games from May 5 to June 28. During the streak, the 23-year-old out Santo Domingo, DR batted.391 with 12 doubles, two triples, eight home runs, and 30 RBIs. The previous league record for longest hit streak was 37 games, set by El Paso s Bobby Trevino in Only 13 players in the 151 -year history of Minor League Baseball boast a longer hit streak than Cesar. FALL BOYS: Major League Baseball released the rosters for the Arizona Fall League. RHP Forrest Whitley, RHP Erasmo Pinales, IF Abraham Toro, OF Ronnie Dawson, and OF Myles Straw are the 2018 Hooks who will play for the Scottsdale Scorpions. Corpus Christi hitting coach Troy Snitker and athletic trainer John Gregorich are on the Scottsdale field staff. The Scorpions are comprised of prospects from the Astros, Reds, Mets, Phillies, and Giants systems. The Arizona Fall League begins on October 9 and runs through November 17. REHAB REPORT: Houston outfielder Jake Marisnick played in his first rehab game with the Hooks last night, going 0-for-4 while playing the full game in center field. Marisnick, who has been on the shelf since August 11 due a groin injury, went 4-for-8 with a home run and 5 RBIs in 2 rehab appearances for Fresno this past weekend. The elite defender has played in 79 games for the Astros this season, batting.217 with 7 doubles, 9 home runs, 23 RBIs, and 4 stolen bases. Marisnick owns a.342 batting average, 14 extra-base hits, and 13 RBIs in 19 Pacific Coast League assignments this year. The 27-year-old out of Riverside, CA, has toiled in 6 Major League seasons. Marisnick went 3-for-7 in 2 rehab games for the Hooks in GOING FOR SECONDS: Following last night s 6-0 setback, Corpus Christi s lead in the 2nd-half pennant race has shrunk to 1.5 games with 5 to play. The Hooks can clinch the 2nd-half Texas League South pennant by forcing a split of this 4-game series. Corpus Christi has ran the table only once in its 13-year history. The 2013 club went to win both halves. The franchise s best overall record came in 2015 when the team won 89 and lost 51. RUE THE RIDERS: Frisco has foiled the Hooks in the 2nd half, going 10-4 against the Texas League South first-half champs. Corpus Christi enjoyed a hot start against the RoughRiders, posting a 14-5 mark in the first 19 meetings. Since then, Frisco has won 10 of the last 11 bouts. The Hooks have clinched a winning record against all of the Texas League clubs, sans for the RoughRiders (15-15) and Arkansas Travelers (5-7). STUCK IN NEUTRAL: The Hooks have managed just 1 run in the last 28 innings. Corpus Christi has now been blanked 9 times this season, and 4 of those shutouts have occurred in the last 10 games. The Hooks are batting.219 this month while averaging 3.0 runs per game. Corpus Christi batted.278 while scoring 5.2 markers per contest over the first 4 months of WRENN ON THE RUN: Tuesday night, Stephen Wrenn swiped his 43rd bag of the season, which leads the Texas League and is tied for 7th in Minor League Baseball. Wrenn has matched Josh Anderson (43, 2006) for 3rd on Corpus Christi s singleseason leaderboard for steals in a season. Anderson stole 50 bases in 2005, which ranks 2nd in club history. Delino DeShields, Jr. is the single-season franchise leader with 54 stolen bases in ROSTER UPDATE: The Astros have placed RHP Forrest Whitley on Corpus Christi s disabled list, retroactive to August 25. Whitley, who owns a 3.76 ERA and 11.6 K per 9 IP rate in 8 starts for the Hooks, was scratched from his start on Friday vs. Midland due to right-lat discomfort. Houston also shipped RHP Ralph Garza to Corpus Christi from Triple-A Fresno. Garza is 7-2 with a 3.59 ERA in 33 appearances between the Hooks and Grizzlies this year. The New Braunfels native and struck out 69 and walked 30 in 62.2 innings. Garza is 6-0 with a 3.52 ERA while averaging 3.9 K per BB in 16 outings for Corpus Christi.
