Sportman s walk-off home run to stun the Hooks 6-5 on Thursday night. The defeat snapped Corpus Christi s six-game win streak. Erasmo Pinales looked to protect a 5-2 lead in the ninth inning, but walked two batters before giving up a game-tying three-run shot to Eli White. After recording the second out of the frame, Sportman followed with the final swing. CC jumped out a 4-0 advantage early on against RockHounds starter Logan Shore, plating two runs apiece in the first and third innings. In the first, Chas McCormick started the game with a single while Stephen Wrenn laced an RBI triple to bring McCormick home. Randy Cesar brought in another run with a sac fly. In the third, Josh Rojas started the frame with a single and Cesar drove him in with an RBI double. Ryne Birk made it a 4-0 lead with a sac fly. Brandon Bielak was solid through five innings of work, allowing just an earned run while striking out five. Bielak was replaced by Hector Perez in the sixth, who made his Texas League debut. Perez retired the side in order for a scoreless sixth but allowed a run in the seventh to make it 4-2. John Gorman tossed two scoreless frames out of Midland s bullpen to keep the score steady until the ninth. In the ninth, Corpus Christi plated an insurance run when Ryne Birk doubled to start the frame and later scored on a wild pitch thrown by righty Nolan Blackwood. 2 PAGE 2 LATE LOSS: Last night s loss was just one of a handful the Hooks have suffered when leading a game after eight innings. Before yesterday, Corpus Christi had four losses this season when leading after eight innings. The Hooks are now 52-5 when leading entering the ninth inning this season. It was also one of a handful of times CC has been defeated when scoring first in a ballgame. The Hooks are now 42-9 when they strike first in a contest. BIELAK S BRILLIANCE: Right-hander Brandon Bielak has shined since joining the Hooks, throwing a combined 16.1 innings while giving no earned runs. In last night s game, Bielak fired five innings while giving up just an unearned tally in the fourth. The 22-year-old Notre Dame product has allowed just 13 hits while striking out 15 and issuing six walks. The Texas League is batting.228 against him. CIONEL MAKES BIG LEAGUE DEBUT: LHP Cionel Perez was called up to the Houston Astros on Wednesday and made his Major League debut in Houston s 8-3 loss to Oakland later that evening. Perez entered the ballgame in the eighth inning, tossing a scoreless frame while allowing a hit and striking out a batter. He returned for the ninth inning and recorded the first two outs of the frame, ultimately throwing a total of 1.2 IP while allowing an earned run on two hits and striking out two batters. This was Perez s second promotion to the big leagues. The 22-year-old was called up on June 29 and spent a couple of days with Houston, but was never brought into a game. He is the 102nd player in the 14-year history of the Hooks to make their major league debut. The hard-throwing southpaw is the first player to go directly to The Show from Corpus Christi since 2015 when RHP Michael Feliz, RHP Lance McCullers Jr., and RHP Vincent Velasquez earned received the call to Houston. Perez registered a 6-1 record and 1.98 ERA in 16 games (11 starts) with Corpus Christi this season. He recorded 83 strikeouts and 22 walks in 68.1 innings pitched. DOUBLE-A DARLINGS: Corpus Christi has won 10 of their last 12 games and are at a season-best 28 games over.500. The club s overall mark of (.652) is the best overall winning percentage in Double-A. The Hooks own the second-best overall winning percentage among Minor League Baseball s full-season clubs, with the Midwest League s Bowling Green Hot Rods (Tampa Bay) the only club better at (.678). The Texas League South first-half champs are since May 26. NO QUESTIONS FOR QUINTANA: Hooks catcher Lorenzo Quintana put together a record setting night on Monday in Corpus Christi s 15-6 win to complete a series sweep of Northwest Arkansas, belting a trio of homers in his first three at-bats of the game. He then went 1-for-3 with 2 RBI and 2 runs scored in Wednesday night s victory at Midland. In his last two games, Quintana is a combined 4-6 with three homers, 8 RBI, and 7 runs scored. Quintana also stole two bases on Wednesday night. Quintana became the third player in club history to record a three-homer game, joining the ranks of J.D. Davis (2016) and Domingo Santana (2013). His five runs scored in the contest also set a new club record. Monday night marked Quintana s second multi-homer game of the year. Of the Cuban native s eight home runs this season, seven have come at the expense of Northwest Arkansas. HELLO, HECTOR!: RHP Hector Perez was promoted to Corpus Christi from High-A Buies Creek on July 10 and made his Double-A debut on Thursday night in Midland. Perez is considered Houston s seventh-best pitching prospect, according to MLB.com. The 22-year-old tossed two innings out of the bullpen at Security Bank Ballpark on Thursday, allowing an earned run and three hits while striking out a pair. Perez went 3-3 with a 3.84 ERA in 17 games (11 starts) in 72.2 innings in the Carolina League. At the time of his promotion, he leads the circuit in batting average against (.196) and is tied for second in strikeouts (83). BIG TIME BATS: The Hooks set season-highs in runs (15) and hits (20) in Monday night s 15-6 win at Whataburger Field and exploded again for 11 runs on 13 hits on Wednesday night in Midland. Corpus Christi also had a nine-run outburst in Sunday s victory. The Hooks have scored 44 runs combined in the last five games. CC is averaging 5.5 runs per game during the 2018 campaign. BIG TIME ARMS: Corpus Christi s pitching staff has been sensational since the All-Star break (14 games) Hooks pitching holds a 2.69 ERA (37 ER) in 124 innings pitched. SUPER SPEEDY: Corpus Christi s aggressive baserunning has been consistent from Opening Day, as the Hooks lead the Texas League with 119 stolen bases this season. Stephen Wrenn leads active Texas League players with 28 stolen bases in The only player to register a higher total is former Hooks Of Myles Straw, who collected 35 swiped bags in the circuit before being promoted to Triple-A Fresno. ASTROS REPRESENTATIVES IN FUTURES GAME: RHP Forrest Whitley and OF Yordan Alvarez have been selected as representatives of the Houston Astros at the 2018 SiriusXM Futures Game. The game will be played on July 15 at Nationals Park. Whitley, 20, is ranked by MLB.com as baseball s best pitching prospect. In 6 starts this season with Corpus Christi, the righthander is 0-1 with a 4.29 ERA. He has struck out 30 and walked 8 in 21 innings. Alvarez, 21, will attend his second Futures game after playing in the 2017 edition of the contest. Alvarez was promoted to AAA Fresno earlier this month.
