1 San Antonio (37-30, 78-59) at Corpus Christi (30-35, 64-71) Sunday, September 3, 2017 Whataburger Field Corpus Christi, TX 4:05 p.m. DH ON THE RECORD: Home Road Series 1-7 Sweeps L 1 Streak 4-1 Last Last 10 SUNK IN THE SECOND: San Antonio sent nine men to the plate and scored six times in the second inning Saturday night as the Missions beat Corpus Christi, 6-3, in the series opener at Whataburger Field. Ty France opened the decisive frame with a base hit to right field. It was the first of 15 Missions singles on the night. Back-to-back two-run knocks by Fernando Tatis, Jr., and Josh Naylor capped the barrage and forced Josh James from the game. Corpus Christ s bullpen answered the early bell. Alex Winkelman and Ryan Thompson scattered eight hits over 6 2/3 shutout frames. Riley Ferrell struck out two in a perfect ninth. Kyle Tucker belted a two-out solo shot in the first against Brett Kennedy. The Hooks were kept off the board until the fifth. Jason Martin worked a lead-off walk and cruised into third on Antonio Nunez s double into the left-field corner. Arturo Michelena cracked a comebacker to the mound, and Martin beat the throw home for Corpus Christi s second run. Kennedy picked up his Texas League leading 13th win, limiting the Hooks to four hits and one walk in six innings. The Hooks hit into three double plays over the last five innings. Jose Castillo mitigated control issues by allowing just one run in the seventh. Castillo spun a eighth before giving way to Brad Wieck who was perfect in the ninth for his seventh save. All proceeds go directly to affected Coastal Bend areas. The Hooks and San Antonio Missions continue the set tomorrow with a 4:05 doubleheader. The Labor Day regular-season finale also starts at 4:05. PLAYOFF PICTURE: Congrats to the Tulsa Drillers who clinched the 2nd-half Texas League North title with a walk-off win over Springfield last night. The Drillers are now set to face Northwest Arkansas in the first round of the playoffs. San Antonio won both halves in the South, and will match up with either Midland or Corpus Christi in the TL South Division Series. The RockHounds magic number to advance to the postseason is 2. Any combination of Midland wins and Hooks losses adding up to 2 ends Corpus Christi s playoff bid. The Hooks, who had their 6-game win streak snapped last night, were 6 games out of a playoff spot last Friday. The RockHounds, who lost in 11 last night, have 2 games remaining in Frisco before the close of the regular season. ROSTER UPDATE: Following last night s game, the Astros promoted lefty Alex Winkelman to Triple-A Fresno. Southpaw Sean Stutzman joins the Hooks today from Buies Creek. Stutzman is 3-2 with a 2.20 ERA in 32 games between Fresno, Corpus Christi and Buies Creek this season. The Dallas Baptist product has struck out 70 against 22 in 65.1 frames. The 24-yearold has logged 12 games with the Hooks over 2 prior stints (April 13-17, May 17-June 23). Stutzman authored a 1.10 ERA in 16 Carolina League assignments, averaging 10.7 strikeouts per 9.0 IP. Houston also added Brendan Feldmann to the Hooks roster today. Feldmann, signed this past June as an undrafted free agent, went 2-1 with a 0.54 ERA in 12 games for the GCL Astros. The Washington, MO, native has struck out 21 against 1 walk in 16.2 innings, holding the opposition to a.156 batting average. Feldmann pitched attended Lindenwood University in Saint Charles, MO. THE NIGHTCAP: Game 2 of tonight's doubleheader pits RHP Jake Esch against RHP Forrest Whitley. The 19-year-old Whitley has made 3 appearances for the Hooks, posting a 0.87 ERA. He has struck out 20 and walked 4 in 10.1 frames. Whitley was selected by Houston in the 1st round (17th overall) of last year s draft out of Alamo Heights High School in San Antonio. Whitley struck out five while allowing 1 run on 4 hits in 2.1 innings Wednesday in Frisco. He worked 2 hitless innings August 25 at The Wolff, striking out 4 against 3 walks. Whitley struck out 11 against 2 hits over 6.0 shutout innings in his Double-A debut Aug 17 at Tulsa. Rated by MLB.com as Houston s top pitching prospect, the 6-foot-7 Texan stands 5-4 with a 2.76 ERA in 21 games (17 GS) between Corpus Christi, Buies Creek and Quad Cities this year. Whitley is averaging 14.0 strikeouts per 9.0 innings. A MIGHTY PEN: The trio of LHP Alex Winkelman, RHP Ryan Thompson and RHP Riley Ferrell continued an impressive stretch for Hooks relievers last night.
