1 Dragons GameDay Tuesday, June 18, 2013 Midwest League All-Star Game Fifth Third Field Dayton, Ohio 7:07 p.m. Radio: WONE-AM 980 Western Division All-Stars vs. Eastern Division All-Stars Lance McCullers (3-4, 2.08) vs. LH Daniel Watts (8-3, 3.74) 49TH ANNUAL MIDWEST LEAGUE ALL-STAR GAME DAYTON, OHIO The Dayton Dragons are proud to host the 49th annual Midwest League All-Star Game at Fifth Third Field on Tuesday, June 18th. The game will match the Eastern Division All-Stars against the Western Division All-Stars. The roster for each team consists of 18 position players and 17 pitchers. The Midwest League features 16 clubs. Seven members of the host Dayton Dragons have been selected to play. Outfielder Jesse Winker has been chosen as a starter for the Eastern Division, while shortstop Zach Vincej will be a reserve. Dragons pitchers Drew Cisco, Sal Romano, Sean Lucas, Alejandro Chacin, and Ben Klimish have also been selected to play. Robert Stephenson was chosen to play but has been replaced due to injury. The Eastern Division roster also includes West Michigan second baseman Devon Travis, the Midwest League s leading hitter at.350, as well as Brandon Drury of South Bend, who is batting.319 while leading the league in slugging percentage at.564. Drury has 10 home runs. The Western Division roster is highlighted by Cedar Rapids outfielder Byron Buxton, the second overall selection of the 2012 draft by the Minnesota Twins. Buxton leads the league in runs scored with 65, 16 more than any other player in the league. Buxton currently ranks second in the Midwest League in batting average at.344 and second in slugging percentage at.561. He has hit eight home runs, driven in 52 runs, and stolen 29 bases. The Western Division team also includes hard-throwing Lance McCullers Jr. of the Quad Cities River Bandits (Houston Astros affiliate). McCullers, a 2012 supplemental first round selection, has posted a 2.08 ERA through 60.2 innings. McCullers, son of former Major League pitcher Lance McCullers, throws a fastball that has reportedly reached 100 miles per hour. The Western Division team will also include Midwest League home run co-leaders Rock Shoulders of Kane County (Chicago Cubs affiliate) and Renato Nunez of Beloit (Oakland Athletics affiliate), who have both belted 13 homers this season. Also on the Western Division team is shortstop Carlos Correa of Quad Cities, the number one overall selection of the 2012 draft. Correa is batting.304. The Midwest League All-Star Game was first played in 1964 and has featured many of today s biggest Major League stars such as Albert Pujols, Joe Mauer, Miguel Cabrera, Prince Fielder, Jay Bruce, Johnny Cueto, and Adam Dunn. Earlier MWL All-Star Games featured players like Goose Gossage, Carlton Fisk, Vida Blue, Gary Gaetti, Dan Quisenberry, and Dave Stewart. The Dragons have hosted the Midwest League All-Star Game on one previous occasion, in That game featured Midwest League all-star Justin Morneau of Quad Cities, who won the American League Most Valuable Player award just five years later with Minnesota. ###

2 MIDWEST LEAGUE ALL-STAR GAME HISTORY The history and tradition of the Midwest League All-Star Game spans five decades and includes an impressive list of participating players. Fans in attendance at Fifth Third Field on June 18 are virtually guaranteed to get an early look at several future Major League stars. The Midwest League All-Star Game was first played in 1964 and became an annual event in 1966, making this season s game the 49th annual mid-summer classic. The format of the game from was a matchup of the Midwest League team with the most wins in the first half of the league s split-season format against a group of all-stars from the other teams in the league. The league s winningest team was also the host city for the game, allowing for little preparation time. The format of the game from was interesting. The Midwest League All-Stars battled a Triple-A team each season, winning in four of the five years. From 1979 to the present, the game has matched two groups of all-star teams split by divisions or regions. Many of today s biggest Major League stars played in the Midwest League All-Star Game. Albert Pujols, a nine-time big league all-star and three-time National League Most Valuable Player, played in the All-Star Game in 2000 as a third baseman representing the Peoria Chiefs. Also on the field that night were Adam Dunn of the Dragons and Jake Peavy of Fort Wayne, who would both on to play in Major League All-Star Games. Miguel Cabrera, the 2012 American League triple crown winner for the Detroit Tigers, played in the Midwest League All- Star Game at Fifth Third Field in Dayton when the Dragons hosted the event in Cabrera represented Kane County as a Marlins prospect. Justin Morneau of Quad Cities also played in that game, just five years before he would win the American League Most Valuable Player Award. Among the many other current Major League stars once played in the Midwest League All-Star Game are Johan Santana, Joe Mauer, Prince Fielder, and Adrian Gonzalez. One of the top performances in any Midwest League All-Star Game belongs to Jay Bruce, who represented the Dragons in Bruce was selected as the game s Star of Stars (Most Valuable Player) that night went he belted a home run, double, and single in a game that also featured Bruce s future Reds teammates Johnny Cueto and Travis Wood and future Major League standouts Justin Upton and Jaime Garcia. Earlier Midwest League All-Star Games also featured many great players. Carlton Fisk, now a member of the National Baseball Hall-of-Fame, hit a home run in the 1968 Midwest League All-Star Game when he was known as Carl Fisk. Vida Blue pitched in that same 1968 MWL All-Star Game, just three years before winning the American League Most Valuable Player and Cy Young Award. Rich Goose Gossage, another hall-of-famer after nine big league all-star game appearances, was a starting pitcher in the 1971 Midwest League All-Star Game. Dan Quisenberry, one of the greatest relief pitchers in baseball history, played in the Midwest League All-Star Game in Ironically, that was one of the seasons when the all-stars battled a Triple-A opponent, and Quisenberry and the all-stars met an Iowa Oaks team that included third baseman Tony LaRussa, then a player in the White Sox system. The host city for the Midwest League All-Star Game is now rotated among the 16 franchises in the league. The Dragons organization is proud to be part of a tradition that has lastly nearly half a century.

3 HOME RUN DERBY AT MIDWEST LEAGUE ALL-STAR GAME TO FEATURE PRO SLUGGERS, LOCAL YOUTH DAYTON, OHIO The Dayton Dragons announced today that the Midwest League All-Star Game festivities at Fifth Third Field on June 18 will feature a Home Run Derby beginning at 5:30 p.m. The event will include four of the top home run hitters in the Midwest League this season and two local little leaguers from the Miami Valley. This year s Midwest League Home Run Derby is a team contest between groups representing the Eastern Division and Western Division. The teams will consist of two Midwest League All Stars and one local little leaguer. The derby will feature two rounds (10 outs in the first round per player; 5 outs in the second round per player). The team with the most home runs at the end of the second round will be crowned the team champion. The individual with the most home runs will also be recognized and receive an award. Temporary fencing will be placed in the outfield to serve as the home run wall for the little leaguers joining each team. We re very excited about all of the festivities surrounding the Midwest League All-Star Game, but especially about our local ties in the home run derby, Robert Murphy, Dayton Dragons Team President said. It s going to be quite a moment when these two area little leaguers step up to the plate for their team with all of the support of these professional baseball players around them. Eastern Division Derby Participants: Jesse Winker, Dayton Dragons (Cincinnati Reds affiliate). Winker, 19, has belted nine home runs for the Dragons this season while batting.291. He has ranked among the top five in the league in slugging percentage and on-base percentage for most of the past several weeks. Winker is a native of Orlando, Florida and was drafted and signed out of Olympia High School. Brandon Drury, South Bend Silver Hawks (Arizona Diamondbacks affiliate). Drury has belted 10 home runs and is hitting.319. He was originally signed by the Atlanta Braves out of Grants Pass (Ore.) High School before being acquired in a trade by the Diamondbacks organization. Ethan Tedder, Dayton little leaguer. Age: 11. Team: Beavercreek Sox. Height: 5 2. Weight: 110lbs. In addition to over-the-fence home runs, Ethan notched a pair of inside-the-park home runs during a recent tournament game. Western Division Derby Participants: Rock Shoulders, Kane County Cougars (Chicago Cubs affiliate). Shoulders, 21, is tied for the Midwest League lead in home runs with 13 while batting.264. He is a product of Manatee-Sarasota (Fla.) Community College and a native of Tampa, Florida. Renato Nunez, Beloit Snappers (Oakland Athletics affiliate). Nunez, 19, has drilled 13 home runs this season to tie for the league lead while batting.278. He is a native of Venezuela. Devin Dudley, Dayton little leaguer. Age: 12. Team: Gem City Throwbacks. Height: 5 7. Weight: 160 lbs. Devin once hit three home runs in the same game during his career. ###

The Dragons MVP Program Presented by PACE, WDTN-TV/DAYTON'S CW, SINCLAIR COMMUNITY COLLEGE The Dragons MVP Program, a tool for teachers uses the marketing power of Dayton Dragons Baseball as an educational tool for fourth and fifth grade teachers, helping them motivate and reward students for success in the classroom. The use and distribution of the awards we are offering are entirely up to each teacher. Fourth and Fifth Grade teachers in the three county area (Clark, Montgomery and Greene counties) receive an award kit to recognize five students in their classroom. Each of the five students selected as a Dayton Dragons MVP in their classroom will receive four lawn tickets to a special MVP night at Fifth Third Field, a MVP certificate, tickets to a MVP field day at the park, and a uniquely designed MVP hat. In addition to these items, they also have the opportunity to have their success story highlighted, throw out a first pitch, have an on-air radio interview, and participate in an Entertainment skit during a Dragons game. Each year, 900 class rooms participate involving more than 26,000 students with 4,500 Dragons MVP winners. Community All-Stars The Dragons Community All-Stars Program honors individuals who have gone above and beyond to improve the quality of life in the Miami Valley. From fire fighters to first responders to volunteers and good Samaritans, we're going to highlight these Community All-Stars at Dragons games all summer long. We will be honoring 35 all-stars total with five of these all-stars being honored on the field with a tribute video and having their story featured in the DDN and on a tri-fold in PlayBall!
