V9Z 1J2 Dear Mayor and Council, My name is Justin Wilson, I am currently Vice-President of Sooke Minor Fastball and the coach of the U14B Team. The fields of Art Morris have hosted a number of generations of Sooke residents. I have been lucky enough to watch my father play in Sooke, he then coached me and now I have been coaching my daughter here for the past 7 years. I hope she willin turn coach her children on these fields. Our park this year had 163 children registered and 4 mens teams. The money brought in from registration fees goes toward paying umpire courses and umpire s wages, hosting tournaments, maintaining tractors, buying gas, renting school gyms in winter for indoor practices, Softball BC fees to cover player insurance costs, amongst numerous other things. Our concession is run by the hard working volunteers of the Sooke Harbourside Lions Club. The money they make is then distributed throughout our community to the people and groups that need it the most. If you have driven by the ball diamonds recently you willsee the park is being very well maintained by our parent volunteers. However hard work willonly take you so far. Our dugouts and clubhouse are in need of new roofs, the fencing in areas is sagging and needs replacing, we would like to make our batting cage an all weather cage by having a custom made tarp for the roof so it can be used in the rain as our season is so short already. There are a few other items on our wish list in the package provided. The registration funds can handle our day to day maintenance but not larger infrastructure repairs. This year we paid $11,000 for upgraded backstop fencing at our number one diamond to enhance safety for fans on the bleachers and around the park. A new set of bleachers were built with volunteer labour but the materials were paid by the association. The parks clubhouse, dugouts and bleachers were all repainted again by volunteers but 15 gallons of paint was expensive. I see this park supporting many of our children and families for years to come, just as it has in the past. Visiting teams come to our town and spend money both at our parks concession and at local businesses. 3 SMFA Program Information Sooke Minor Fastball Association (SMFA) is a non-profit volunteer run organization that is committed to providing a fun and challenging sports program inclusive of all youth, boys and girls ages 5-19 of any skill level in the community of Sooke, BC and surrounding area. SMFA was incorporated as a Society in February, 2002, but has a long history of organized community softball going back to August SMFA has been operating a minor softball program starting at the Learn to Play level, up to U19. In 2018, we have organized and fielded 7 Learn to Play teams (U6 & U8), two U10 teams plus U120, U14C, U14B, U16C, and a U19C team. The program has been developed to promote an active lifestyle in the local community, improve skill level, build self esteem, and foster lifelong participation in sport. SMFA advertises their program though local school newsletters, it's website online social media outlets, signage, flyers and placing ads in the local newspaper. SMFA works with and supports other local community groups to build strong community relationships such as Sooke Men s Fastball, the Sooke Harbourside Lions Club; who lend out their service volunteers to help run the SMFA ballpark concession. SMFA also offers clubhouse space to Amber Academy, another local non-profit organization who's focus is to create healthier and higher qualities of life for youth by empowering them through the fine arts. SMFA promotes fellowship amongst all our members by providing equal opportunities for all players, maintaining strong volunteer commitments from parents, which ultimately helps to cultivate community spirit. Through team sport, the players learn the values of sportsmanship, fair-play, life ski ls, and develop respectful social interactions. They also experience positive mentorship, foster lifelong friendships, and further grow a love for playing softball. Thank you for your consideration. 4 35,000 Minor capital projects: SMFA is in need of critical funding to work on several necessary park upgrades and maintenance as outlined below: Minor capital projects budget: 1. Batting Cage improvements: - Cover for all weather protection, and required in order to use the cage in rainy weather: Commercial Tarp $2070 (see attached quote) - Stabilizing Straps $200 - Crane equipment rental for installation: $250 - Underground electrical power to the batting cage $1000 (currently running an extension cord from clubhouse approx. 100ft) 2. Ballpark Security Gate replacement: $5,000 (photos attached) 3. Lawn Maintenance hire regular lawn maintenance labourer: $2500/yr 4. Clubhouse roof replacement $10, Field Dugout roots $3600 labour and materials (photos attached) 6. Ballpark Fencing upgrades - chain link fence replacement for entire ballpark. All field diamond fencing needs replacement plus security fence between ravine and ballpark property. SMFA would stage project by: - replace one diamond fence (of 3) per calendar $30,000 per diamond (quote(s) attached) - add Security Perimeter Fence $25,000 Total Minor Capital project funds budget: $84,620.00
