3 THE SERIES - FSU VS. RHODE ISLAND Florida State and Rhode Island will face-off for a three-game series in Tallahassee beginning Friday, February 15. The meeting marks the second straight year these two schools have squared off and the first time the meeting has occurred on opening weekend. The Seminoles won all three games a season ago outscoring the Rams en route to the series sweep. But don t let the run differential fool you as games two and three of the series were determined by a combined three runs. FSU took game one of the series 17-6 scoring 11 runs in the first three innings against the Rams thanks to a five-hit effort from Jayce Boyd. In game two, Mike Compton allowed just two hits - both singles - over 6.0 innings as it would be the only hits for URI that day as FSU went on to a 2-0 victory. The series finale was not without the dramatic as FSU took its first lead of the game in the bottom of the ninth when Jayce Boyd delivered a two-out, two-run walk-off double to give the Seminoles the 6-5 victory and the series sweep. Both teams posted respectable batting averages in the series with FSU hitting.272 to Rhode Island s.271. The Seminole bullpen ended up being the difference maker in the series as eight pitchers combined to allow just one run on 12 hits in 13.2 innings. CAREER NUMBERS VS. Friday marks the first time that FSU will play Rhode Island on opening day. The Seminoles have suffered a loss on opening day just seven times in 65 previous seasons with two of those losses coming in Tallahassee. In 1998, the Garnet and Gold fell to Notre Dame at a neutral site marking the last time FSU has dropped a season opener. The last time FSU lost a season opener at home was 1981 when Georgia Southern defeated the Seminoles 3-2. Auburn handed Florida State its only other opening day loss at home back on March 20, 1958 as the Tigers swept the opening day doubleheader (4-3, 10-7). When it comes to home openers all-time, FSU is 61-4 (.938) with only one loss coming in the last 31 years. Under Hall of Fame head coach Mike Martin, FSU Baseball is 30-3 on opening day. FIRST SERIES OF THE SEASON Florida State has not lost the first series of the season since a streak of 31 consecutive series victories on opening day. In 65 years of FSU baseball, the Seminoles have only lost a season opening series twice. The last time the Seminoles lost a series to open the season came in 1981 when Georgia Southern took two of three games from Florida State. The only other time the Garnet & Gold lost a series to open the season came in 1958 when Auburn took both games of a two-game set. Overall, Florida State is in season opening series. STREAKING INTO 2013 The season hasn t even started and already the Seminole captain is leading the charge. Justin Gonzalez is the only active player on this year s roster that enters the year with a current streak of reaching base in consecutive games. The Miami, Fla., native ended the 2012 campaign having reached base in the last seven games. Gonzalez and Jose Brizuela are the lone Seminoles hoping to add to their hit streak in 2013: Justin Gonzalez - 5 (career-high = 8) Jose Brizuela - 1 (career-high = 5) LEIBRANDT GETS OPENING DAY START AGAIN One year later and all that has changed is FSU s opening day opponent. Brandon Leibrandt will take the mound as the opening day starter in Friday s game against Rhode Island for the second straight year. Leibrandt made his collegiate debut last year on opening day against Hofstra as he worked 5.0 innings allowing one run on three hits in earning his first career win. After making school history last year as the first freshman to start an opening day game, Leibrandt will become just the sixth Seminole pitcher to start on opening day in consecutive years dating back to Sean Gilmartin ( ) was the last FSU pitcher to make back-to-back starts on opening day. Here is a look at those back-to-back opening day starters: Brandon Leibrandt & 2013 Sean Gilmartin & 2011 Bryan Henry & 2007 Blair Varnes & 2002 Jon McDonald & 2000 Roger Bailey & information 2012 Returning Statistical Leaders Average (At least 40 starts) Josh Delph Justin Gonzalez Stephen McGee Jose Brizuela Hits Justin Gonzalez...54 Jose Brizuela...50 Stephen McGee...47 RBIs Justin Gonzalez...42 Stephen McGee...41 Jose Brizuela...38 ERA (with at least 5 starts) Brandon Leibrandt Mike Compton* Scott Sitz * will miss 2013 season 2013 quick facts Location...Tallahassee, FL Symbol...Seminoles Colors...Garnet & Gold Enrollment... 41,710 President...Dr. Eric J. All of this is pretty impressive for a school that has the most wins and the highest winning percentage in Division I since 2000 and the second highest winning percentage all-time in Division I history. On top of all that, the most impressive stat is the fact that Florida State baseball has never endured a losing season in 65 years. WINS SINCE Florida State South Carolina Rice Texas North Carolina MAKING THE CONNECTION If you re a movie buff and can t get enough Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon, then you re going to love a little Six Degrees of Seminole Baseball. So I know you re asking yourself what s the FSU baseball connection between Friday s opening day starter Brandon Leibrandt and his dad, former major leaguer, Charlie Leibrandt... No, Charlie did not go to school at Florida State, but he was managed by former FSU head DH: Brizuela - 62 S. Miller - 4 Delph - 1 Johnson - 62 Brizuela - 3 Holland - 2 Nogowski - 34 Holland - 13 Spradling - 9 Delph - 6 S. Miller - 4 Boyd - 1 Gonzalez - 60 Johnson - 5 Alfonzo - 2 Ramsey - 67 Leibrandt - 19 Compton - 18 Sitz - 13 P. Miller - 10 Weaver - 6 Busch - 1 McGee - 67 coach Dick Howser for three years with the Kansas City Royals ( ). In fact, Charlie was in the starting rotation the year the Royals defeated the St. Louis Cardinals to capture the 1985 World Series Championship. The rest of the connection is pretty easy. Howser was head coach at FSU in 1979 before leaving to take the managerial job with the New York Yankees in One of Howser s assistants in 1979 was Mike Martin, who succeeded Howser as head coach at FSU. And of course Martin enters his second season coaching Brandon. So there is your Six Degrees of Seminole Baseball or perhaps it should be Four Degrees. WALK IT OUT Florida State drew 19 walks in four games at the College of World Series and 56 in nine postseason games in FSU finished the 2012 campaign as the national leader in walks with 386, while three Seminoles ranked in the top five nationally - Sherman Johnson (1st - 69), James Ramsey (3rd - 63) and Stephen McGee (5th - 61). The Seminoles have led the nation in base-onballs the last three years and in four of the last five seasons ( ; ; ; ). In 2009, FSU finished second nationally in walks with 386. Florida State has drawn 1990 walks the last five years, good for an average of over 398 walks a year. SEMINOLE STARTS BY POSITION (2012) Travis - 66 Holland - 1 S. 5 OUCH! THAT HURTS The Seminoles reached base a total of 96 times courtesy of a hit-by-pitch in 67 games in FSU finished second in the ACC to Virginia, who was hit a league-best 98 times in Five Seminoles were hit by a pitch at least nine times last year. Stephen McGee led all Seminoles with 16 followed by Stephen Spradling with 12. Justin Gonzalez and Seth Miller each had 11 and James Ramsey was hit nine times. McGee s 16 HBPs ranked as the fourth most in a single-season in school history. The Seminoles registered a season-high six HBP in a 2-0 win over Rhode Island (4/28). It was the most HBPs in a game since FSU was hit six times against UCF in the NCAA Tallahassee Regional on June 6, The 96 HBP were the second most in a season in the FSU record books. The school record for hit-by-pitches in a season is 97. PRESEASON ACCOLADES Florida State will open the 2013 season ranked among the top teams in the nation according to several preseason polls. The USA Today Coaches Poll gave the Seminoles their highest ranking at No. 9, while the NCBWA (11th), Collegiate Baseball (17th), Perfect Game (18th) and Baseball America (20th). Both Mike Compton and Brandon Leibrandt were honored as preseason All-Americans by Louisville Slugger/Collegiate Baseball. Compton was also named to the NCBWA s third team preseason All-America team. COMPTON TO MISS 2013 CAMPAIGN After making an immediate impact in FSU s weekend rotation a season ago, sophomore Mike Compton will miss the entire 2013 season after undergoing Tommy John surgery to his right elbow. Compton went 12-2 with a 2.87 ERA in 18 starts last year striking out 64 in 91.0 innings of work. The Branson, Mo., native led the ACC and tied for second nationally in wins. NEW LOOK INFIELD After returning all four starting infielders from last year s squad that posted a.968 fielding percentage, the 2013 team will have a few new faces excluding two guys up the middle. Stephen McGee was a work horse behind the plate last year starting all 67 games while catching 576 innings out of a possible total innings played. Senior captain Justin Gonzalez has started 125 games at shortstop over the last two seasons. Jose Brizuela will move to third base after making 62 starts in left field, while freshman John Sansone will make his college debut at second base in the season opener against Rhode Island. Sophomore John Nogowski and JUCO transfer Casey Smit are scheduled to split time at first base. CENTERFIELD SHUFFLE For the fourth time in as many years, centerfield will be occupied by a new face. After three consecutive years of Tyler Holt and then a year each of Mike McGee and James Ramsey, the reins have been given to freshman DJ Stewart (Yulee, Fla./The Bolles School). Stewart hit.424, drove in 29 runs and hit nine home runs during his senior year in high school. Stewart was drafted in the 28th round of the 2012 MLB Draft by the New York Yankees. REPLACING RUN PRODUCTION Florida State will look to replace its top four hitters from last season after the departure of seniors James Ramsey and Sherman Johnson and juniors Jayce Boyd and Devon Travis. The quartet was responsible for more than 54 percent of the runs scored and hits manufactured and over 48 percent of the team s run production driving in a combined 201 runs. Senior captain Justin Gonzalez is FSU s top returning hitter in runs scored (42), hits (54), home runs (9) and RBI (42). As far as the offensive production from 2012, FSU returners account for 273 of 627 hits (43.5%), 195 of 459 runs (42.5%), 207 of 413 RBI (50.1%) and 33 of 63 stolen bases (52.4%) acc preseason poll If the Florida State baseball team wants to capture their seventh consecutive Atlantic Coast Conference Atlantic Division title in 2013 they will have to do so as the underdog for the second time in as many year. In 2013, the Seminoles are tabbed to finish second in the ACC Atlantic Division as voted on by the league s 12 head coaches. Florida State tallied 60 total points and received one first-place votes to win the Atlantic Division. NC State received the nod as the favorite to win the division with 69 total points and 10 first-place votes. Since the league moved to divisional play in 2006, Florida State has either won the title outright or claimed a share of the top spot the last six years ( ). 11 seminole head coach #11 Mike Martin Head Coach 34th Season FSU (1966) 2013 HIGHLIGHTS Now in his 34th season as head coach at Florida State University, Mike Martin continues to redefine success by any standard of measure. With 1,723 career victories, a.743 winning percentage that sits second among active NCAA Division I coaches, 33 consecutive regional tournament appearances and 15 trips to the College World Series, Martin s place in college baseball history is secure. Martin was inducted into the American Baseball Coaches Association Hall of Fame in Since then he has eclipsed the 1,500-, 1,600- and 1,700-win milestones and returned to the College World Series three times in the last five seasons, while continuing to turn out All-Americans, Major League Draft choices and postseason participants. The FSU alum has become the face of Florida State baseball having been associated with the Seminoles for 41 of FSU s 66 seasons. Of the 3,598 baseball games played in program history, Martin has been involved in 2,705 as a player, assistant coach and head coach. What is even more impressive is Martin s involvement in 1,990 of the 2,623 all-time victories at Florida State. In one way or another, Martin has been a part of more than 75.9% of FSU s victories. Martin has won 16 conference championships since taking over as head coach in 1980 with 11 from the Metro Conference and five in the ACC. Since moving to divisional play in 2006, Martin has led the Seminoles to at least a share of the ACC Atlantic Division title six years in a row from Florida State captured the ACC Championship in 2010 defeating NC State in Greensboro, N.C., and has played in the conference title game in three of the last four years. FSU s run to a division title in 2008 was accomplished after Martin led the Noles to a league mark of 24-6, a school record for the most conference wins in team history. Martin and the Seminoles matched that total with 24 wins in He is a six-time Metro Conference Coach of the Year and has been recognized as the top coach in the ACC seven times. Eighty-four Florida State players have earned All-America honors under Martin, while 109 players have garnered first and second team All-ACC recognition. He has coached seven players, Mike Fuentes, Mike Loynd, J.D. Drew, Shane Robinson, Tony Thomas, Jr., Buster Posey and James Ramsey, who were named National Players of the Year. In 2010, Martin was named to Florida State University s list of 100 Distinguished Graduates in celebration of the FSU Alumni Association Centennial.
