1 PHILADELPHIA PHILLIES (31-61) vs MIAMI MARLINS (42-50) Wednesday, July 19, 2017 Marlins Park 12:10 p.m. EDT Game 93; Road 52 RHP Nick Pivetta (2-5, 5.63) vs RHP Dan Straily (7-4, 3.32) LAST NIGHT S ACTION: The Phillies defeated the Marlins, 5-2, at Marlins Park Starter Vince Velasquez (ND) made his first start in over a month after a DL stint due to a right elbow flexor strain He went 6.0 innings and allowed 2 runs (1 ER) on 4 hits with 1 walk and 4 punchouts The clubs traded runs through the first 4 innings and found themselves tied at 2-2 in the 8 th inning Maikel Franco clobbered a clutch home run in the Phils half of the 8 th and Nick Williams broke it open with a 2-run shot in the 9 th The Phils bullpen shined again, tossing 3.0 scoreless innings in relief of Velasquez. POSITIVE TRENDS: Over their last 22 games (6/22-current), the Phillies have outscored their opponents (+7) and rank ninth in the majors and sixth among all National League clubs in run differential over that stretch The Phils had a similar run earlier this season from April 3 to May 1, when they outscored the opposition (+14), despite playing to an even.500 record (12-12) in that stretch However, between these two aforementioned stretches of good play (5/2-6/21), Philadelphia had been outscored (-112) with a record (.217 win %). BILLY THE KID: Since making his Major League debut on June 30, outfielder Nick Williams ranks T- 2 nd among all National League rookies in home runs (3) & RBI (10), 3 rd in OPS (.881), AVG (.302) & SLG % (.547) and T-3 rd in hits (16) & extra-base hits (7) Williams has been on a tear since coming back from the break and ranks 2 nd in all of baseball with 9 RBI in those five games, trailing only WSH s Anthony Rendon (10) Additionally, Williams who has multiple hits and RBI in each of his previous three games (7/16-current), is only the seventh Phillie since 2000 to accomplish that feat He joins Odubel Herrera (6/3-5/17), Jayson Werth (8/18-20/09), Raul Ibanez (5/15-16/09), Ryan Howard (9/7-9/08), Chase Utley (7/15-17/05) and Pat Burrell (7/31-8/2/05) Only three Phillies players since 1913 have done so in four or more straight games: Greg Luzinski (4 G, 7/13-15/77), Chuck Klein (5 G, 6/21-25/32) and Lefty O Doul (4 G, 8/5-10/29). BE LIKE MAIK: Third baseman Maikel Franco, who went 3-for-4 with an 8 th -inning home run last night, has finally started to see a bit of luck go his way at the plate Over his last 135 plate appearances (31 G, 6/12-current), Franco is slashing.268/.333/.520 with 10 2B and 7 HR Franco has 12 walks and only 12 strikeouts in that stretch Despite his recent success at the plate, Franco s.229 batting average on balls in play this season is still well below his.277 average from RAGING BULL: Centerfielder Odubel Herrera has reached base safely in each of his last six games (7/9-current) In that span, he has scored six runs, tallied eight hits (2 1B, 3 2B, 3 HR) and has three walks to three strikeouts, while slashing.348/.423/.870 Herrera entered play on June 1 with a season slash line of.218/.262/.326 in 206 plate appearances over his first 50 games However, Since June 1, Herrera is batting.318 (49-154) with a.352 on-base percentage and.532 slugging percentage over 162 plate appearances and 39 games Herrera leads the Phillies in WAR this season = OFFENSE: The aforementioned trio of Nick Williams, Maikel Franco and Odubel Herrera have combined to go 23-for-61 (.377 AVG) with a OPS and eight doubles, five home runs, 17 RBI and 10 runs scored through the first five games of this road trip. ROTATION RESURGENCE: Since June 6 (37 G), the Phillies rotation has logged innings, which ranks third among all major league clubs in that span, trailing only Boston (234.2 IP, 39 G) and Washington (228.1 IP, 37 G) In those 36 games, starters have failed to complete at least 5.0 innings only two times and have recorded 21 quality starts In that same stretch (since 6/6), Phillies starters have posted eight starts of at least 7.0 IP and two earned runs or fewer, something they did only seven times in their first 55 starts of the season. BULLISH ON THE PEN: Since June 26, the Phillies bullpen has posted a 2.04 ERA (12 ER, 53.0 IP) and 1.00 WHIP (16 BB, 37 H), has struck out 56 of the 214 batters faced (26.1 % K rate) and held opponents to a.533 OPS The relievers have stranded all 12 of their inherited runners in that span Since June 26, only San Francisco (2.03 ERA) has a lower combined bullpen ERA than the Phillies Additionally, their.533 opponent OPS ranks 1 st in MLB in that span and their 1.00 WHIP ranks 2 nd. ELIAS SAYS: Maikel Franco s solo home run in the eighth inning off Dustin McGowan gave the Phillies a 3-2 lead over the Marlins, a lead they never relinquished It was the fourth go-ahead home in the eighth inning or later of Franco s major league career Franco also hit go-ahead homers that late in a game in Washington on June 12, 2016 (off Jonathan Papelbon), at Citi Field on Sept. 22, 2016 (off Addison Reed), and on June 4 of this season against the Giants (off Derek Law). SAINT PATRICK: With a scoreless inning last night in Miami, Pat Neshek has now had 39 scoreless appearances this year in 41 appearances overall (95.1 %) Neshek represented the Phillies and the National League in the 88 th Midsummer Classic just over a week ago in Miami In his second All-Star Game (other: 2014 with STL), Neshek surrendered one hit in a scoreless second inning (4 BF) He was the first Phillies reliever who was not the team s primary closer in the first half to be selected as an All- Star since Joe Hoerner in PHILLIES PHACTS Record: (.337) Home: Road: Current Streak: Won 1 Last 5 Games: 2-3 Last 10 Games: 3-7 Series Record: Sweeps/Swept: 3/8 PHILLIES VS.
