1 ARIZONA DIAMONDBACKS (30-39) vs. PHILADELPHIA PHILLIES (30-38) Saturday, June 18, 2016 Citizens Bank Park 3:05 p.m. EDT Game 69; Home 36 RHP Zack Greinke (9-3, 3.75) vs. RHP Jerad Eickhoff (4-8, 3.40) LAST NIGHT S ACTION: The Phillies lost to the Arizona Diamondbacks, 10-2, at Citizens Bank Park Starter Adam Morgan had an interesting night on the mound He gave up 7 runs (4 ER) on 10 hits with 3 home runs, no walks and 8 strikeouts The Phillies made three errors behind him that prolonged innings and raised his pitch count. In the first inning, Cameron Rupp crushed a pitch that was mere inches from going over the fence in right, as he settled for a 2-run triple to put the Phils up 2-0 early It was all downhill from there, as Arizona answered with 16 hits, six homers and 10 runs over the next 8.0 innings. GENERAL EICK: Today s starter, Jerad Eickhoff, has tossed 16 quality starts through the first 21 starts of his Major League career That is tied for the most by a Phillies pitcher since 1913 (others: Art Mahaffey, & Bruce Ruffin, 1986) The last three ML starters to do so before Eickhoff were NYY s Masahiro Tanaka (16 QS in first 21 GS), NYM s Jacob degrom (16 QS in first 21 GS) & PIT s Gerrit Cole (16 QS in first 21 GS) Over his last two starts (vs CHI & at TOR), Eickhoff has tamed two of the most powerful offenses in the game, going 2-0, 0.69 ERA (1 ER, 13.0 IP) He has allowed only five hits in those two games (0 XBH) and has held opponents to a.116/.224/.116 slash line The Blue Jays have won seven of their last eight games, with their only loss coming against Eickhoff and the Phils on June 13 Toronto is averaging 9.86 runs and hits per game in those seven wins. RATTLED SNAKES: The Phillies have won four of their last five games against the D backs at Citizens Bank Park, 9 of their last 12, and 19 of their last 25 They are undefeated in their last eight home series versus Arizona (8-0 since 2008), including three sweeps (last series loss at CBP: 5/28-30/07, 0-3) During this 25-game stretch at CBP, the Phillies have outscored the D backs (+43, RPG) with a collective.857 OPS and 103 extra-base hits (63 2B, 4 3B, 36 HR) Less than three years ago, on August 24, 2013, Philadelphia and Arizona played an 18-inning marathon at CBP which lasted seven hours and six minutes, the longest time of game in franchise history for both the Phillies (previous: 6:15 on 7/2/04 vs BAL) and the D backs (previous: 5:53 on 5/29/10 at SF). POWER STRUGGLE: After beginning the season with a (.585) record through their first 41 games (4/4-5/18), when they trailed the Washington Nationals by just a half-game in the NL East, the Phillies have gone 6-21 (.222) to fall to a season-high eight games under.500 (30-38,.435) They now trail the Nationals by 13.0 games, their largest division deficit since finishing the 2015 season 27.0 games back In those 27 games, Philadelphia has a -66 run differential (148-82, RPG) Their offense is batting just.218 ( ) over that period with a.264 on-base percentage, the worst of any team in MLB (next: CWS,.296) Additionally, since May 20 th, Phillies pitchers have allowed the most home runs of any staff in the majors (49) They also rank 24 th in WHIP (1.47), 28 th in opponents AVG (.285) & ERA (5.14) and 30 th in OPS (.850) & SLG (.504). WE DIDN T START THE FIRE: Phillies starters have failed to pitch past the 4 th inning in five of their last nine games (38.2 total inn, 4.1 avg per start since 6/8) They are 1-6 with a Major League-high 8.38 ERA (36 ER, 38.2 IP) during that period (next: MIN, 7.43) Over their first two turns in the rotation (10 G, 4/4-14), Philadelphia led the majors in starters ERA (2.14), opponents AVG (.173), OBP (.218), SLG % (.280) and OPS (.498) Since April 15 th, Phils starters have posted a 4.76 ERA (167 ER, IP) in 58 games, which ranks 13 th among all starting staffs in the National League and 23 rd in MLB. HOME SICK: The Phillies are averaging just 2.83 runs per game at Citizens Bank Park in 2016, half a run lower than any other team in MLB (29 th : ATL, 3.36 RPG)... The last time Philadelphia finished a season averaging less than 3.00 RPG at home was 1940 (2.94 RPG; 232 R, 79 G), while the last ML team to do wo was the 2011 San Francisco Giants (2.91 RPG; 236 R, 81 G) In their 35 home games, the Phillies are batting.219 (29 th ) with a.279 OBP (30 th ) and.347 SLG % (29 th ).
