Well, the first-ever Phillies game was played at home in Philadelphia in 1883, and 20-year-old starter John Coleman threw the very first pitch against the Providence Grays Left fielder William (Blondie) Purcell got the Phillies first hit and scored the first run (he singled in the 1 st inning and scored on a ground out. GO GET EM, ROOK!: Right-hander Jake Thompson will become the sixth player to make his Major League debut for the Phillies this season (T-9 th most in MLB), joining OF Tyler Goeddel, 1B Tommy Joseph, and pitchers Zach Eflin, Edubray Ramos, and Daniel Stumpf Last year, 10 players made their ML debuts for Philadelphia -- two position players (OF Odubel Herrera, OF Darnell Sweeney) and eight pitchers (LHP Elvis Araujo, RHP Alec Asher, RHP Jerad Eickhoff, RHP Severino Gonzalez, LHP Adam Morgan, RHP Colton Murray, RHP Aaron Nola, RHP Nefi Ogando)... That was the most in a single season for the Phillies since 1996 when they had 15 different players debut In his last 11 starts for triple-a Lehigh Valley, Thompson went 8-0 with a 1.21 ERA (10 ER, 74.1 IP, 18 BB, 42 SO), including 10 quality starts Overall, he has gone 11-5 with a 2.50 ERA (36 ER, IP) in 21 starts for the IronPigs this season He is currently tied for 1 st among all International League pitchers in wins and ranks 3 rd in ERA & WHIP (1.10), and 4 th in innings Thompson entered the 2016 season ranked as the Phillies No. 3 overall prospect by Baseball America after being acquired from the Texas Rangers in the Cole Hamels deal last July He was originally selected by the Detroit Tigers in the 2 nd round of the 2012 draft out of Rockwell-Heath HS (TX) before being dealt to the Rangers in 2014 for reliever Joakim Soria. TRANSACTIONS: Prior to tonight s game, the Phillies designated LHP Brett Oberholtzer for assignment and selected the contract of RHP Jake Thompson Additionally, RHP Andrew Bailey was placed on UR waivers for the purpose of granting him his unconditional release Lastly, OF Peter Bourjos (right shoulder sprain) will begin a rehab assignment today with triple-a Lehigh Valley. KILLA CAM: Backstop Cameron Rupp has homered in a career-high three consecutive games (8/2-5), making him the first Phillies catcher to homer in three straight starts since Mike Lieberthal from July 27-30, 1999 Only two catchers in Phillies history have ever homered in four consecutive games: Darren Daulton (6/7-12/92) and Stan Lopata (7/30-8/2/57) The last Major League catcher to homer in four straight starts was Jarrod Saltalamacchia from September 8-16, Since the beginning of June, Rupp leads all major league catchers (min. 150 PA) in slugging percentage (.632) and ranks 3 rd in OPS (.935), T-3 rd in HR (11), and 6 th in average (.289) He has already established career highs in hits (73), runs (28), doubles (18), HR (13), XBH (32), total bases (132), RBI (38), and SB (1) this season.
