1 WASHINGTON NATIONALS (2-1) vs. PHILADELPHIA PHILLIES (1-2) Friday, April 7, 2017 Citizens Bank Park 3:05 p.m. EDT Game 4; Home 1 RHP Max Scherzer (NR) vs. RHP Vince Velasquez (NR) YESTERDAY S ACTION: The Phillies lost to the Cincinnati Reds, 7-4, at a frigid Great American Ball Park in Cincinnati Starter Clay Buchholz (ND) made his Phillies debut and went 5.0 innings and allowed 4 runs on 7 hits with 2 walks and 3 strikeouts The Phillies jumped out in front early as Daniel Nava homered in his first plate appearance as a Phillie (more on that later) The Reds answered and tied the game at 1-1 in the 2 nd before Nava homered again in the 3 rd Odubel Herrera scored on a wild pitch and it looked as though the Phils were on their way It was not to be as the Reds would score 6 more runs to take the game and the series. A TRADITION, UNLIKE ANY OTHER: Today, the Phillies will begin their 14 th season at Citizens Bank Park Vince Velasquez, who will get the nod for the Phils, will be hard-pressed to top his 2016 debut at CBP when he twirled a 16 strikeout, 3-hit, complete game shutout against the Padres on April 14 of last season As for the festivities prior to the game, Kane Kalas, son of the late, great Harry Kalas, will sing the National Anthem from his father s statue, just behind the leftfield foul pole Sylvia Green, wife of the late Dallas Green, will toss the ceremonial first pitch as will Fred Alward, a 16-year old patient at Nemours Alfred I. dupont Hospital for Children Overall, the Phillies have a 3-10 record in their first 13 openers here Last year, Philadelphia fell to the San Diego Padres, 4-3, on Opening Day at CBP The Phillies have lost each of their last five home openers, with their last win coming in 2011 (5-4 vs HOU). MASTERFUL: Daniel Nava who homered in each of his first two plate appearances yesterday, began his career with a grand slam in his first plate appearance with the Red Sox on June 12, 2010 against the Phillies, in what was his Major League debut According to Elias, only three players in the modern era (since 1961) have homered in their first MLB plate appearance and their first plate appearance with a different team later in their career: John Kennedy (1962 Senators and 1970 Red Sox), Miguel Olivo (2002 White Sox and 2005 Padres), and Hector Luna (2004 Cardinals and 2012 Phillies) Nava is the first player in the modern era (since 1900), to homer in his first plate appearance in the majors and later homer in his first plate appearance for the team against which he homered in his first plate appearance.
