REMEMBER THE FIGHTINS?: The Phillies are in the midst of a six-game winning streak, which is their longest since a seven-game stretch from September 5-12, 2012 Additionally, the Phillies have won nine of their last 10 games and 15 of their last 21 In fact, since April 9, the Phillies are tied for the 2 nd -best winning percentage in MLB (15-6,.714; also, CWS), trailing only the Chicago Cubs (14-5,.737) Over that stretch, Phillies pitchers rank 1 st in the majors in strikeouts (224), 3 rd in opponents AVG (.217), 4 th in WHIP (1.10) & OBP (.277) and 6 th in ERA (3.17) Additionally, the Phillies are now five games over.500 (15-10,.600) for the first time since the conclusion of the 2011 season when they finished with a franchise-best record of (.630). ROTATION RENAISSANCE: Through 25 games in 2016, Philadelphia s starting pitching has been nothing short of spectacular With the team currently (.600), Phillies starters are the main reason the club is off to their best start since 2011 (17-8,.680) When comparing the famed Four Aces rotation of 2011 to the current 2016 rotation, the results are pretty surprising (see chart below)) The 2016 rotation has collected 4.0 fwar so far this year, having almost surpassed their entire 162 game total from last season (4.3 fwar). COMPARING ROTATIONS: 2011 vs 2016 THROUGH 25 GAMES ERA IP BB/9 SO/9 SO/BB AVG OPS WHIP PITCHING AND DEFENSE, THAT LOVELY OLD ADAGE: The Phillies are despite having scored a total of 82 runs, an average of 3.28 runs per game According to Elias, the Phillies are tied with the 2012 Washington Nationals (82 R, 16-9 record) for the fewest runs scored in the expansion era by a team that won at least 15 of their first 25 games The Phillies currently own a -16 run differential after having allowed 98 runs this season That 2012 Nationals team allowed only 69 runs over their first 25 contests, a +13 run differential. BROAD STREEET BULLPEN: The Phillies pen has posted a 2.89 ERA (23 ER, 71.2 IP) over their last 20 games (PHI is 14-6), after allowing 15 ER over their first 10.2 innings from April 4-8 (12.66 ERA) Philadelphia s relievers had a 20.0-inning scoreless streak snapped yesterday afternoon (7 th inn on 4/24 to 9 th inn on 5/1), the longest by a Phillies bullpen since September 1-11, 2004 (28.0 IP). SPLITTING FIRE: Right-hander Hector Neris has had a sensational start to his 2016 season, having posted a 1.17 ERA (2 ER, 15.1 IP), 6.00 SO/BB ratio (24 SO), 0.72 WHIP (4 BB, 7 H) while holding opposing hitters to a.135 average Neris success has been attributed to his split-finger fastball, which he has thrown 52.0% of the time so far this season (119 splitters/229 total pitches), compared to just 20.1% in 2015 (142 splitters, 681 total pitches) Neris has thrown a total of 261 splitter in his ML career and has given up just one home run on the pitch, yesterday to CLE s Carlos Santana. ST. LUNATIC: First-baseman Ryan Howard has 21 career home runs against the St. Louis Cardinals in 234 career at bats That s an average of one home run for every at bats, the highest HR rate for any batter in Major League history against the Cardinals (min.150 AB) Overall, Howard is slashing.342 AVG (80-234),.445 OBP,.658 SLG with 11 2B, 65 RBI and 40 BB in 64 career games against St. Louis His career OPS is the third-highest in ML history against the Cardinals, trailing only Ellis Burks (1.264 OPS) and Lefty O Doul (1.131 OPS) (min. 150 PA). HERE I AM, ON THE ROAD AGAIN: After a brief three-game stop at home, the Phillies begin a 10- game, 11-day trip through St. Louis (4 G), Miami (3G) and Atlanta (3 G) tonight In total, the Phillies are spending 16 of 19 days on the road from April 22 through May 12 They have another similar stretch scheduled for July 22 - August 10 when they ll spend 16 of 20 days away from home. UNCONVENTIONAL WISDOM: On April 20 th, in an attempt to jumpstart the Phillies stagnant offense, manager Pete Mackanin moved his starting pitcher into the 8-spot in the lineup It was the first time a Phillies pitcher had batted 8 th in a starting lineup since Steve Carlton did so on June 1, 1979 at Cincinnati Since Mackanin made the move, Philadelphia has won nine of their 10 games and scored 45 runs in the process (4.50 RPG) Prior to the change, the Phillies had scored three runs or less in nine consecutive games (19 R total, 2.11 RPG average from 4/11-19) and 13 of their 15 games overall (37 R total, 2.47 RPG from 4/4-19).
