1 PHILADELPHIA PHILLIES (48-58) vs. ATLANTA BRAVES (36-68) Sunday, July 31, 2016 Turner Field 1:35 p.m. EDT Game 107; Road 56 RHP Jerad Eickhoff (6-12, 3.83) vs. RHP Joel De La Cruz (0-3, 4.66) YESTERDAY S ACTION: In a swift 3 hour and 40 minute affair, the Phillies defeated the Atlanta Braves, 9-5, at Turner Field Starter Jeremy Hellickson (W, 8-7) threw 5.2 innings, allowing 3 ER on 9 hits with 1 walk and 2 strikeouts... Cameron Rupp gave the Phillies a 1-0 lead in the 2 nd inning with an RBI single off Julio Teheran Atlanta scored 2 runs on 4 hits in the bottom of the 3 rd inning, including RBI singles from Nick Markakis and Adonis Garcia Hellickson helped his own cause in the 5 th inning by ripping a 2-run double down the left field line to give the Phillies a 3-2 lead Freddy Galvis added a 2-run single in the 6 th to make it 5-2 The Phillies scored 4 runs in the 8 th inning without a hit (4 BB, HBP, 2 E) to take a 9-3 lead Atlanta plated two runs in the 8 th off reliever Severino Gonzalez to cut the lead to four But Jeanmar Gomez shut down the Braves in the 9 th to preserve the victory. FOUR SCORE AND : Last night, the Phillies scored four runs in the 8 th inning without a hit (4 BB, HBP, 2 E) According to ESPN Stats & Info, it s the first time Philadelphia had sent nine batters to the plate without recording a hit since July 17, 1992, against the Los Angeles Dodgers at Veterans Stadium (3 BB, 3 E, 1 fly out, 2 strikeouts) It marked the first time it had happened in a Major League game since the Chicago Cubs did it against the Colorado Rockies on August 5, 2014 (3 R, 6 BB, strikeout, sac fly, line out). ELIAS SAYS: Another oddity from last night The Phillies scored nine runs despite collecting just nine hits -- seven singles and two doubles -- in their 9-5 win at Atlanta The last time a team scored as many as nine runs with a single-digit hit total and no home runs was also in a Phillies-Braves game But the roles were reversed on June 28, 2014, when Atlanta won 10-3 at Citizens Bank Park with just seven hits and no long balls. HELP ME, HELP YOU!: Over his first 29 career starts, right-hander Jerad Eickhoff has 15 losses despite posting a 3.49 ERA (69 ER, IP) The last Phillies pitcher with 15+ losses and a sub-3.50 ERA through his first 29 career starts was Jack Kraus from Kraus was with a 3.02 ERA in hist first 29 starts over that stretch The last time ANY pitcher in the Majors had this happen before Eickhoff was Bryn Smith of the Expos from Smith went 11-15, 2.77 ERA in his first 29 starts In his last start, Eickhoff took his 12 th loss of the season in Miami despite allowing only 1 ER in 7.0 innings... He lowered his season ERA to 3.83 with the dominant outing Only two Phillies pitchers over the last 15 years have had 12 or more losses in a single season with an ERA of 3.83 or lower: left-hander Cole Hamels in 2013 (8-14, 3.60 ERA in 33 starts) and right-hander Vincente Padilla in 2003 (14-12, 3.62 ERA in 32 starts) Tuesday marked the eighth time this season that Eickhoff has been saddled with the loss while allowing 3 ER or fewer in a start. WALK THIS WAY: The Phillies have drawn 14 walks over their last two games, including a seasonhigh eight walks last night The last time Philadelphia had 14 or more walks over a two-game span was May 30-31, 2014 (15 total, 9 BB & 6 BB, respectively). RED LOB-STER: Philadelphia has left 10 or more men on base in six of their first nine games of this road trip (4-5 record) In total, they have left 83 men on base in those nine games (11, 14, 6, 11, 4, 10, 6, 10, & 11, respectively; 9.22 LOB per G) Despite having a.244 team average on the trip, including four double-digit hit games, they are batting.159 (13-82) with only two extra-base hits (2B, HR) and 22 strikeouts with runners in scoring position In 17 games prior to the break (12-5 record), Philadelphia posted a.264 (46-174) average and.402 slugging % (4 2B, 3B, 6 HR) with RISP, which was the 6 th -highest AVG among all NL clubs over that stretch Overall this season, the Phillies have the 3 rd -lowest AVG with RISP in MLB (.223) Only the two New York teams have fared worse (NYY,.220; NYM,.204). TOMAHAWK CHOPPED: After sweeping Atlanta in Philadelphia earlier this month (3-0), the Phillies are aiming to win back-to-back series against the Braves for the first time since they won four straight from July 8, 2011 to May 3, 2012 Currently at 8-4 (.667), the Phillies are looking for their first winning season against the Braves since 2011, when they went 12-6 in 18 games (went 8-11 in 2015, 2014 & 2013, 6-12 in 2012) In their 27 series against the Braves since 2012, the Phillies are ON THIS DATE IN PHILLIES HISTORY: July 31, 1994 In his first year of eligibility, Steve Carlton, the winningest pitcher in Phillies history, was inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame Lefty pitched for 24 seasons in the big leagues, including 15 with the Phillies ( ), before retiring in May 1988 During his time in Philadelphia, Carlton amassed a record with 3,031 strikeouts in 499 starts He became the first pitcher in ML history to win four Cy Young Awards (1972, 77, 80, 82) and was a 10-time All-Star He was the winning pitcher in the 1980 World Series-clinching Game 6 versus Kansas City, giving Philadelphia its first championship in franchise history His number (32) was retired by the Phillies in PHILLIES PHACTS Record: (.453) Home: Road: Current Streak: Won 1 Last 5 Games: 2-3 Last 10 Games: 4-6 Series Record: Sweeps/Swept: 4/6 PHILLIES VS.
