The club did pick it up in conference play however, going 12-9 and finishing just three games behind the co-champions Cal State Northridge and UC Davis. - Cal Poly continued its bizarre odd year, even year split a year ago, a trend that has developed since Condon took the job in Through last season, the Mustangs are now overall with a record in conference play in even numbered years, while posting an overall record of and a league mark of in odd years. The only league titles and NCAA appearances for Cal Poly came in 2007 and 09, while its lone losing season in that string was in Last season, Anna Cahn s superb season ended with a piece of Big West history. She became just the second player in league annals to win the Player of the Year award after previously being named the Pitcher of the Year. She has led the program to two Big West titles, the first 40-win campaign in school history and the first DI playoff wins in Mustang lore in only six years on the job. She came to Cal Poly from Oregon State, where she was the associate head coach for four seasons and an assistant coach for two others. Condon also served a season as an assistant at UNLV in Condon had a decorated playing career at Iowa State. She garnered NFCA second team All-America honors in 1989 and twice received GTE/CoSIDA Academic All-American recognition. She is the all-time leader with 216 hits, 24 triples, 120 runs scored and a.351 batting average for the Cyclones. She was inducted into the Iowa State Hall of Fame in After graduating from Iowa State in 1991 with a bachelor s degree in education and a minor in health, Condon played on the U.S. National Team for two years. In 1994, she played on a United States team that won a world championship and earned a gold medal on the 1995 Pan American Games team. Additionally, head coach Michelle Gromacki is just 19 wins shy of 400 for her career, a number only three other coaches have reached in Big West lore. - Cal State Fullerton s hopes for a bounceback season will be played out mostly in front of their home fans. 18 of CSF s 30 non-conference games are slated to be at Anderson Family Field. Gromacki piloted the Titans to national top 10 finishes in 2002 (No. 9) and 2003 (No. 10). In 2003, her team went 20-1 in conference play to set a record for best Big West winning percentage and hosted the NCAA Regionals for the first time since Gromacki s credentials as a coach reflect the success she had as a player. She was a part of Cal State Fullerton s 1986 national championship team, and was regarded as one of the best catchers in the nation. Gromacki was the fastest coach in school history to reach 100 wins, accomplishing the feat in 134 games. Her staff has also won NFCA West Region Coaching Staff of the Year honors four times in the last seven seasons. She guided the Titans to a record in 2000 in her first season and was recognized as Big West Coach of the Year for her efforts. In 2001, CSF posted a mark. The Titans went in 2002 for the most victories in a season since the 1987 team won 59 with Gromacki in her final year as a player. Gromacki also has coached on the national level for three years, including as an assistant coach for the USA Elite National Team from , and is one of 15 inaugural inductees into the Antioch Sports Legends Hall of Fame in her hometown of Antioch, Calif. THE WINDUP WITH JOHNSON Appeared in 41 games in 2010, making 39 starts... Hit.287 with four home runs, 17 RBI, and 19 runs scored... Led the Big West in triples (4) and finished second on the team with 10 multi-hit games and tied for third with four multi-rbi games... Had three hits in a game twice against Southern Utah (2/13) and UC Santa Barbara (4/2), the latter part of a 3-for-4 day that included a home run, three runs scored and four RBI... Hit.258 in Big West Conference play with three home runs, 13 RBI, and 11 runs scored. First Season Tairia Flowers, who has enjoyed success as an outstanding collegiate player, an Olympic gold medal winner and as a successful collegiate assistant coach, is the new head coach of the softball program at Cal State Northridge. Flowers begins her new duties at Cal State Northridge after serving the past four seasons ( ) as an assistant softball coach at Big West rival Long Beach State. As a member of the 49ers coaching staff, Flowers helped the team to two NCAA Tournament appearances and Top-25 rankings on numerous occasions. Flowers helped coach 29 Big West All-Conference selections and six Academic All-Americans. As a team, Long Beach State set numerous and individual school records including batting average, runs batted in, doubles, triples and walks. Flowers responsibilities at Long Beach State included coaching, recruiting, scheduling, designing a conditioning program, field maintenance, coordinating academics and being a positive voice for Long Beach State softball in the community. Flowers was a four-year letter winner ( ) at UCLA. During her tenure with the Bruins, Flowers helped UCLA to four appearances at the College World Series including being a member of the 2003 NCAA championship team. Flowers earned All-American honors twice (2001, 2003) and was a three-time member of the All- College World Series team (2000, 2001, 2003). Flowers outstanding talents on the softball field at UCLA led to a berth on the United States National Softball team since In 2004, Flowers helped the United States to a perfect record and the gold medal in Athens, Greece, and to a silver medal at the 2008 Beijing Olympics. Flowers has also won gold medals at the 2002 and 2006 World Championships, the 2003 and 2007 Pan Am Games, and the 2001 U.S. Cup. The former LBSU assistant has already amassed an impressive 103 victories in her three year career. Working mainly with the hitting and defense in her assistant coach role for 11 seasons, Sowder has been an integral part of the Long Beach State success. In 2005, the 49ers set school records for team batting average (.273) and home runs (39). Defensively, the 49ers have led the Big West in team fielding percentage in four of the last six seasons. The 1998 squad won the NCAA fielding percentage crown with its school-record.978 clip. Sowder s success as a coach can be traced to her success as a player for Long Beach State. She was a third team All-American in 1991, a two-time all-conference performer and is the school s all-time stolen base leader with 50. Her 19 steals in the 1991 season still ranks first on the 49er single season chart. Sowder also ranks in the 49er career top 10 in at bats (860), runs (96), walks (49), hits (204), sacrifices (52) and stolen bases (50). Defensively, she holds three of the top four single season assist marks including a school-record 243 in A 1998 inductee into the Long Beach State Athletics Hall of Fame, Sowder earned her undergraduate degree from Long Beach State in 1993 in marketing. After graduation she went into the coaching ranks, spending two seasons as an assistant coach at the University of the Pacific. She returned to Long Beach State in August of 1995 as an assistant coach and was promoted to associate head coach in Sowder earned her master s in physical education from Azusa Pacific in THE WINDUP WITH PETTY Earned second team All-Big West honors in 2010 after claiming first team All-Conference accolades in Went with a 2.50 ERA, 15 complete games, four shutouts and 135 strikeouts... The Aggies entered conference play at 11-21, but went 15-6 against Big West teams to finish in a tie for the top spot. UCD was awarded the automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament thanks to its series win over co-champion Cal State Northridge. - The Aggies had their best season as a member of the Big West in Aside from the league championship, UC Davis recorded 26 wins after totaling 46 in its previous two seasons. UCD s 15 conference wins also equaled the amount the club had posted in the previous two seasons combined. - UC Davis championship season was spearheaded by its youngsters and most of the roster returns to defend the crown. Yoder came to UC Davis from after a head coaching stint at Napa Valley College during the 2003 and 2004 seasons, going She led Napa to the Bay Valley Conference title in her first season, earning BVC Coach of the Year honors. In 2004, Yoder guided the Storm to a runner-up finish in the league s West Division. Prior to her stint at NVC, she served as head softball coach at North Carolina Greensboro from , going Yoder held her first head coaching position at her alma mater Cal State Hayward (now known as Cal State East Bay) after serving as an assistant coach for two seasons. As a collegiate player, Yoder lettered three years as a catcher and designated player at the University of New Mexico from 1991 to Yoder previously played at West Valley College, where she was selected as NorCal Catcher of the Year in In 1991, she won All-America honors as a catcher at the ASA national tournament. The Highlanders equaled their program-best with seven wins against Big West foes last year, the second consecutive season the club has reached that mark. Miner returned to the UCR campus as a head coach in 2004 after serving a one-year stint as the associate head coach at North Carolina. She spent three seasons as the associate head coach at UC Riverside from Miner has accumulated significant head coaching experience on the Division I level, having spent eight seasons at Eastern Michigan and four more at San Jose State. She compiled a record at Eastern Michigan, and led the program to five seasons of.500 or better. She coached one All-American and nine Mideast regional selections during her tenure. While with the Spartans, Miner amassed an record. She earned career win No. 300 on March 14, 1998 in a 12-3 triumph over Centenary. At North Carolina in 2003, where she was in charge of pitchers, catchers, IFielders and hitting, Miner helped guide the Tar Heels to a record and a spot in the 2003 NCAA Tournament. In her two seasons as an assistant with the UCSB program, Galicinao coached the pitchers and catchers and helped lead the Gauchos to a pair of NCAA Tournament appearances. In 2007, Jennifer Davis, one of her pitchers, was named Big West Conference Pitcher of the Year. In addition to her on-field duties, Galicinao has been involved in recruiting and all other aspects of the program. Prior to her arrival in Santa Barbara for the season, Galicinao served as the Director of Athletic Relations at Princeton. She was also an assistant coach for the Tigers in 2003, helping guide the team to a record and a berth in the NCAA Regionals. As a player at Princeton from , where she graduated with a Bachelor s Degree in History, Galicinao was a four-year starting pitcher. In 2002, her senior season, she was team captain and was selected Ivy League Pitcher of the Year after leading the Tigers to a 13-1 league record, an Ivy League crown and an NCAA Regional bid. As a junior in 2001, Galicinao had the eighth-lowest ERA in NCAA Division I ranks and made Ivy League history when she was named both Pitcher and Player of the Year. In fact, she was the only pitcher in league history to earn Pitcher of the Year honors twice. In 2002, she was also selected as the C. Otto Von Kienbusch award winner as Princeton s Sportswoman of the Year. Kolze led the club to its 15th 20+ win season in 18 years last season, going overall. Kolze s 543 wins is third all-time in Big West history and makes him only the third coach in conference history to win 500 career games and 200 career Big West games at a member school. He is also a three-time Big West Coach of the Year recipient. Tiger softball has reached numerous highs under Kolze, finishing in the National Fastpitch Coaches Association top 25 in 2001 and 2002, garnering No. 18 and No. 20 rankings, respectively. In 2001, the Tigers went with a school record for wins and came one victory away from the College World Series. The following season, they posted a mark. The club also posted 12 consecutive winning seasons from , the best streak in program history. THE WINDUP WITH ARMAGOST Heralded recruit lived up to the hype in her first collegiate season, earning first team All-Big West accolades as a pitcher... went with a 2.12 ERA, 19 complete games, five shutouts, two saves and 123 strikeouts in innings... Led Big West in ERA and opponents batting average (.210), while ranking fourth in innings pitched and strikeouts, tied for fourth in wins, tied for second in saves and allowed the 10th-fewest hits (133)... Was a threat at the dish as well, batting.284 with three home runs, 29 RBI and 12 doubles...
