Fresno State, which owns a nine-year record of in WAC action, is the four-time defending conference champion. The Bulldogs have captured the WAC title five out of the last six years while the being runner-up in the year that they did not win the league crown. Fresno State is the first school to win four straight titles and became the second to win three consecutive crowns. In the last four WAC seasons alone the Bulldogs have compiled an 81-7 mark (.920). Fresno State is 20-4 in conference openers and 14-2 in league openers under head coach Margie Wright. The Bulldogs have finished among the top three in WAC play since joining the conference in Bulldogs at Top-Ranked UCLA Next Monday Fresno State will travel to Los Angeles to battle No. 1 UCLA in a non-conference doubleheader next Mon., March 25, 1:00 p.m. The Bruins, who are idle until the Bulldogs come to town, are 30-3 on the year and have been sitting at the top spot of the USA Today/ NFCA Coaches Top 25 Poll since the first regular-season poll was released on Feb. 20. Dogs Get Weekend Rest Fresno State will have a weekend off after playing at UCLA on March 25. However, the Bulldogs will be back in action the following Tuesday, April 2, when they travel to No. 3 Stanford for a non-conference doubleheader beginning at 5:00 p.m. Grandest of Them All Fresno State head coach Margie Wright became the first NCAA Division I softball coach and the 24th NCAA Division I head coach, per records kept by the NCAA, to collect 1,000 NCAA Division I wins. Wright, who became the NCAA s Division I all-time winningest softball coach in 2000, joined 23 other head baseball coaches in the elite 1,000 win club. Century Mark Senior third baseman Lindsay Fossatti (Tustin) has hit the century mark in career walks last week. Having been walked 100 times in 228 career games played, Fossatti broke the Western Athletic Conference record set by former Bulldog All-American Angela Cervantez (97, ). In the school s annals, Fossatti sits second and will be looking to surpass another former Bulldog All-American Gina LoPiccolo (106, ).

Olympic Festival 1986 International constultant for Latin American & Pan American Games 1979 Illinois State Athletic Hall of Fame (pitcher) Head Coach Margie Wright In her 17th season as head coach of the Fresno State softball program, Margie Wright (Illinois State, 1974) has directed the Bulldogs to a national title (1998) while guiding the program to the NCAA Women's College World Series in 10 of the last 15 years. As only the second NCAA Division I coach to amass 900 or more Division I career wins, she owns an impressive (.773) mark with the Bulldogs and a 23-year career record of 1, (.751). Becoming the NCAA's all-time career win leader on March 23, 2000 with a 2-1 victory over CS Northridge, Wright became the first NCAA Division I coach to accumulate 1,000 Division I wins on March 12, 2002 when the Bulldogs swept Tennessee Tech (4-0, 2-1). Having directed the Bulldogs to the WCWS 10 times since 1986, the eight-time conference coach of the year has collected 12 outright or shared conference titles, a WAC tournament championship, 10 regional championship crowns and 16 straight NCAA postseason appearances. With a NCAA title and three national runnerup trophies to her credit, Wright is the only coach in program history to garner region coach of the year honors (seven times) and is the third head coach overall at Fresno State to garner National Coach of the Year accolades (1998). Boasting a (.850) all-time home field record and a (.877) mark at the new Bulldog Diamond since 1996, Wright has averaged 52 wins a year and has coached 44 All-Americans and 12 Verizon Academic All-Americans. An assistant coach for the 1996 USA Olympic softball gold medal team, Wright also helped the USA Softball National Team to a gold medal at the 1998 ISF World Championships. Wright Joins 1,000 Win Club Wright has reached momentous milestones since becoming the program s third head coach in Recording career victories No. 200 through No. 900 at Fresno State, Wright became the NCAA s all-time winningest Division I coach with win No. 914 on March 23, 2000 (2-1 vs. CS Northridge). The 1998 National Coach of the Year entered the 2002 season 22 wins shy of being the first-ever NCAA Division I head coach to record 1,000 NCAA Division I victories. She became the first softball coach and just the 24th head coach on the Division I level, regardless of sport and per records kept by the NCAA, to post 1,000 Division I victories on March 12 with a 2-1 victory over Tennessee Tech. Overall, only three head coaches, regardless of Division, have posted at least 900 fastpitch wins entering the 2002 season: Wright ( ), Sandy Jerstad of Augustana ( ) and Judi Garman of CS Fullerton ( ). Recognized as a cornerstone of softball excellence since their inception, the Bulldogs boast a heritage that is hard pressed to be found elsewhere. A tradition that is held in high esteem, Fresno State softball demand for excellence has not only delivered the first national title to the university but has produced unparalleled success both on the field and in the classroom. Hawai i Edges Fresno State in WAC s Preseason Poll Despite winning the last four consecutive Western Athletic Conference softball championship titles (five in last six) and collecting the most preseason all-wac picks, Hawai i edged out Fresno State by one point and is favored to capture the 2002 WAC title this spring. The Bulldogs, who had been the WAC s preseason favorite the past seven years, collected 33 points with three first-place votes and three second-place votes (coaches can not vote for their own team). Hawai i, which has been the league s runner-up twice and will be without their top pitcher/player Felicity Witt who is with the Australian National Team, received 34 points with four first-place votes and three second-place votes. Loyola Marymount (25 points), Portland State (19 points), Tulsa (14 points), WAC newcomer Louisiana Tech (11 points) and San Jose State (11 points) round out the coaches preseason poll. About Portland State (5-10, 0-0 WAC) Portland State, which is 3-3 in its last six games, is coming off tournament play at the Kansas Holiday Inn Invitational. The Vikings went 2-2 with wins over Indiana State (5-2) and Princeton (3-1) and losses to Princeton (3-2) and Kansas (5-0). PSU, which finished fourth in the WAC last year with a 9-11 conference mark, is picked to finish fourth this season. The Vikings had its home doubleheader against No. 15 Oregon State rained out last Friday. Offensively, freshman catcher Rose Rutledge leads the team with a.35 (11-31) batting average with two runs, three doubles, four RBI and 14 total bases. Senior outfielder Monica Martell is next with a.341 average (15-44) with five runs, a double, three walks, three stolen bases, an RBI and 16 total bases. In the circle, junior right-hander Morgan Seibert is 4-4 with one save, 68 strikeouts and a 2.76 ERA in 53.1 innings. In addition, junior right-hander Nichole Ivie is 1-2 with six strikeouts and a 2.80 ERA in 15.0 innings. In the all-time series, Fresno State owns an 8-0 advantage since the two programs first met in About Loyola Marymount (12-19, 0-4 WAC) Loyola Marymount has already gotten a jump start in WAC play. The Lions opened conference action on the road with a four-game series at Hawai i and endured four losses (6-4, 7-2, 3-2, 9-0). LMU, which hosts No. 6 Oklahoma today, entertains San Jose State on Thur., March 21, before meeting Fresno State on Saturday. Having lost its last six contests and being 1-9 in its last 10, Loyola Marymount is 4-3 at home entering its non-conference doubleheader against the Sooners. Picked to finish third in the WAC race this year, Loyola Marymount is being led by senior outfielder Christy Cerecedes, who is hitting.360 (36-100) with 20 runs, six doubles, four home runs, 17 RBI and 56 total bases. In the circle, senior right-hander Jennifer Heliotes leads the team with a 7-6 record despite a 2.46 ERA with one shutout and 48 strikeouts in 88.1 innings. In the all-time series, Fresno State owns a 9-2 advantage since About #1 UCLA (30-3) No. 1 UCLA is idle this week after sweeping UC Santa Barbara (7-1, 4-0) at home last Wed., March 13. Having won their last three, the Bruins are 7-2 against the Top 25 this season. Winning 13 of its last 14 contests, UCLA is 13-1 at home with its only loss at Easton Stadium coming by the hands of then No. 17 CS Fullerton (3-1). The Bruins, who are batting.371 as a team and boasts a 0.44 ERA through 33 games, are being led by a pair of.500 hitters in senior catcher Stacey Nuveman (.558, 48-86) and junior shortstop Natasha Watley (.537, ). Nuveman has a team-high 10 doubles, eight home runs, 36 RBI and a slugging percentage while Watley is tops for the Bruins in hits, runs (42), stolen bases (28) and total bases (91). In the all-time series, UCLA owns a series lead since 1981.

Nationally ranked every week for 167 consecutive weeks since the NCAA s first Top 15 poll in 1983, the Bulldogs have been in the nation's Top 20 for 20 straight years. In addition, they have been in the Top 10 for 150 weeks. On March 14, 1989, the Bulldogs achieved their firstever No. 1 national ranking and were ranked No. 1 for two straight weeks in 1997 before finishing as the No. 1 team in the final 1998 USA Today/NFCA Coaches Poll. In 1999, Fresno State opened the year with a No. 1 preseason ranking after winning the national title in Since March 29, 1988, the Dogs have been the top-ranked team five times, ranked second 35 times, ranked third 32 times, and ranked fourth 20 times. The Fresno State softball program's five No. 1 rankings is the most ever by a Bulldog athletic team. Whipple Gets Going Senior center fielder Tiffany Whipple (Fresno) helped the Bulldogs to a 5-2 record last week,,, As the leadoff batter, Whipple led the team in batting, runs, hits and total bases in seven games In the seven games played, Whipple had four multiple-hit performances In the doubleheader sweep over Tennessee Tech, Whipple batted.286 (2-7) with a run, double and three total bases At the Kia Klassic in which the Bulldogs went 3-2 and advanced to the quarterfinal round, Whipple batted.438 (7-16) with four runs, hit by pitch and seven total bases In the tourney opener vs. #18 Louisiana-Lafayette, Whipple went 2-3 with two runs while taking away two hits with diving catches in shallow center field Against #13 Washington, Whipple went 3-4 with a run while going 2-3 with a run versus Utah Whipple, who is batting.295 against the Top 25 this season, is hitting.302 overall while tops on the team in hits (32), runs (21), and stolen bases (9) while second in total bases (33) and third in walks (9) She also leads the team in multiple-hit games with 10. With an 18-3 record on the year that includes 24 appearances with 20 starts and 20 complete games, freshman right-hander Jamie Southern (Clovis) has thrown 11 shutouts, a perfect game, two no-hitters, set a single-game school record in strikeouts (19) and picked up a save while opponents are batting.125 against her for a 0.22 ERA. Tallying 12 ten-plus strikeout games, Southern has totaled 202 strikeouts in innings for an average of 8.72 strikeouts per game. In her career, Southern is 4-2 with a save against the Top 25 while recording four shutouts and 82 strikeouts in 63.1 innings (9.10 strikeouts 7/IP). She owns a 20-3 career mark that includes one save, 12 shutouts with 21 complete games in 22 starts and 28 appearances. Southern has pitched innings and has yielded 73 hits, 13 runs, five earned runs, 34 walks while striking out 217 (8.73 strikeouts 7/IP) for a 0.20 ERA. The most notable change for fans will be security checks at the gates, which include the following: no backpacks, duffel bags, ice chests or large containers; purses, small handbags and thermoses will be subject to search; all cars entering parking lots adjacent to venues as well as vendors are subject to search; increased number of security and venue personnel; no pass outs will be given to allow reentry into the venues; metal detectors will be present at entrances. 16/ 113 The number of strikeouts needed by Jamie Southern to break the rookie mark for most strikeouts in a season and the number of strikeouts needed to set a new single-season school record. Southern Collects Fifth WAC Pitcher of the Week Honor Southern picked up her fifth Western Athletic Conference Pitcher of the Week honor today. As the first pitcher in WAC history to garner four consecutive pitcher of the week accolades, Southern pitched her second no-hitter in nine days against Tennessee Tech on March 12 (program s 53rd no-hitter) while striking out 38 in 31.0 innings for a 0.23 ERA. Southern already has set a single-game school record in strikeouts after making her home debut against the Tigers as she threw all 15 innings and struck out 19 in the Bulldogs 2-1 victory. The 19 strikeouts recorded broke a 20-year old record held by All-American Wende Ward (17 in 14 inn. versus Cal Poly, 1983). Southern already has 202 strikeouts, 11 shutouts and is 18-3 on the year. She owns a season-best highs of four consecutive shutout wins, eight consecutive wins, 92.2 innings without an earned run, a streak of 28.0 scoreless innings and an 11.2 hitless innings pitched streak.
