The opening game of the afternoon was a pitchers duel between UCLA s Keira Goerl, who was coming off of back-to-back Pac-10 Pitcher of the Week honors, and Fresno State s Jamie Southern. The two teams combined for four hits on the day, with the Bruins scoring the lone run of the contest in the third inning on an RBI single by Amanda Freed. Goerl pitched a one-hit shutout, striking out eight and walking one. In the nightcap, Freed stepped into the circle and posted another impressive performance, scattering five hits while striking out five and walking one in the 7-0 victory. BRUINS SWEEP UC SANTA BARBARA PRIOR TO FINAL EXAMS UCLA completed its winter quarter playing schedule on March 13, defeating UC Santa Barbara with game scores of 7-1 and 4-0. In the opening game of the doubleheader, the Bruins scored a run in each of the first two innings before breaking out for five runs in the bottom of the fourth, featuring a monster home run from designated player Claire Sua on a very blustery day at Easton Stadium. The nightcap saw Keira Goerl take to the circle for UCLA, where she struck out eight, walked one and allowed just two hits while improving her season record to The Bruins opened the scoring in the first inning, with Watley circling the bases on a bunt single, stolen base, and two wild pitches. The Bruins added three more runs in the second inning, with a two-rbi triple by Watley, and an RBI single by Freed. SCHOOL PAC-10 GB O ALL UCLA Stanford Arizona Arizona State Washington California Oregon State Oregon GONE, EIGHT TO GO FOR NUVEMAN With eight home runs this season, Bruin slugger Stacey Nuveman currently has 78 career home runs, giving her third place on the NCAA s all-time list. Nuveman now has the best career home run total of any non-arizona player, and is quickly approaching the NCAA career record of 85 home runs, held by Arizona s Leah Braatz and Laura Espinoza. She needs seven home runs to tie and eight to break the NCAA career home run record. Although Cal junior Veronica Nelson has broken the previous NCAA record for walks, Nuveman is third on the all-time list with 204 career walks, just seven behind the previous record holder, Oregon State s Tarrah Beyster (211). Finally, Nuveman ranks fourth on the NCAA s Division I career RBI list with 272. Once again, she is the top non-arizona player on that list, and needs 44 RBI to move up to third (#3 Espinoza had 315 RBI). Nuveman has played in 235 games as a Bruin (through March 26), ranking her tied for fifth in UCLA softball history. She is closing in on Julie Marshall s record for career games played as a Bruin (246), and is on pace to break the record on Apr. 24 at Easton Stadium against Washington. FREED CLOSES IN ON UCLA WINS RECORD Senior Amanda Freed enters Pac-10 play this Friday with a career pitching record of 91-17, needing just six more victories to surpass B Ann Burns (96 from ) for the UCLA career record. Freed is also sprinting up the UCLA lists for appearances (116, second to Burns), innings pitched (698.0, fourth) and strikeouts (689, fifth). Offensively, her career credits are equally impressive. Freed, a member of UCLA s career.300 club (.337 career average through March 26), has become the sixth player in Bruin history to rack up 700+ career at-bats, with 718 (fifth), and holds the UCLA record for career runs scored with 167. She is second in career stolen bases with 48, behind speedster teammate Natasha Watley. Freed is also ranked in doubles (45, 3rd), triples (10, t6th), hits (24, 9th) and RBI (91, 17th). WATLEY STREAKS INTO RECORD BOOKS With three stolen bases in game one against Purdue on March 2, junior All-America shortstop Natasha Watley became the first Bruin in history to record 100 stolen bases in her UCLA career. Watley currently has 112 career swipes, ranking sixth on the Pac-10 s career list. She needs just one more steal to tie Arizona s Amy Chellevold (192-95) and Washington s Rosie Leutzinger ( ) for fourth on the Pac-10 s career list. She also enters Pac-10 play one run scored behind teammate Amanda Freed for the UCLA career record. In addition, she has posted another impressive streak, having hit safely in UCLA s first 29 games during the 2002 season. With a 1-for-3 performance in last May s NCAA Championship game, Watley now has two hitting streaks of 30 or more games in as many seasons. She recorded a Pac- 10 record 32-game streak a year ago (March 2-May 2). Last year s streak is tied for the fifth-longest in on the NCAA Division I list, while the 2002 version is tied for seventh-best in NCAA history. FIVE CURRENT BRUINS IN USA SOFTBALL S CORE GROUP Five current and two former UCLA softball players have been chosen by USA Softball as members of its 22-player core group of athletes to move on to its upcoming World Championships camp in May/June Current players include Toria Auelua, Amanda Freed, Stacey Nuveman, Tairia Mims and Natasha Watley, while volunteer assistant coach Lisa Fernandez and 2001 senior Courtney Dale round out the Bruin contingent. USA Softball will be going for its fifth consecutive World Championship at the 2002 ISF World Championships in July in Saskatoon, Canada. The U.S. is looking to qualify as the top seed for a third consecutive Olympic Games. NUMERICAL ROSTER No. Name Pos. B/T Yr. Ht. Hometown (High School) 2 Erin Rahn OF R/R Sr. 5-1 San Diego, CA (Mt. 3 THROW SOME GROUND BALLS, THEY RE MORE DEMOCRATIC As Crash Davis said to Nuke La Loosh in the movie Bull Durham, Strikeouts are boring, besides that, they re fascist. Throw some ground balls, it s more democratic. Bruin pitchers Amanda Freed and Keira Goerl could be given that same piece of advice. This year, strikeouts have been the popular path to outs for the Bruin pitching staff, as Goerl has six double-figure srikeout games with two 9-K performances, while Freed had a 12K day against Cal State Fullerton on Feb. 27, a 10K no-hitter against Virginia on March 9, and has three 9K performances. Both have impressive strikeout-to-walk ratios in the circle, with Freed checking in at 5.2:1 (94K, 18 BB) and Goerl at 5.6:1 (151K, 27BB). In 2001, each had one double-figure strikeout performance, with Goerl s coming in a 14-inning game. Freed had one game with nine K s, while Goerl had two. In relation to innings pitched, Goerl is picking up nearly 1.5 strikeouts per inning (103.0 IP) this season, while Freed is just over one K/IP. BUCK BECOMES VALUABLE UTILITY PLAYER UCLA s starting shortstop on the 1999 NCAA Championship team, senior Crissy Buck continues to spend her time in the Bruin lineup, but has become more of a utility player for head coach Sue Enquist. During the 2002 season, Buck has recorded 20 starts in right field, eight at third base, four in center field, two at second base and one at designated player. She also played a partial game at shortstop, the only player other than Watley to field the position this season. BRUINS DOMINATE PAC-10 STATISTICS There are two players in the Pac-10 hitting over.500. They both wear a Bruin uniform. There are two pitchers in the Pac-10 with ERAs below They both wear a Bruin uniform. UCLA leads the nation s premier softball conference in team batting average (.370) and team ERA (0.41), and have players leading the league in nine offensive and four defensive statistical categories. At the top of the batting average list are Stacey Nuveman (.554) and Natasha Watley (.535),and both players lead additional offensive categories. Nuveman currently leads all three of the categories that define offensive production, adding the slugging percentage (.989) and onbase percentage (.661) numbers to top the Pac-10. Watley adds a list of leads to her second-place batting average ranking, leading the league in runs scored (43), hits (69), triples (5), total bases (94), stolen bases (29) and steal attempts (34). In the circle, Keira Goerl (0.32) and Amanda Freed (0.42) lead the Pac-10 in ERA, with Goerl having the only opposing batting average under.100 for a Pac-10 pitcher, checking in at.094 BRUIN NO-HITTERS Feb. 1 Goerl vs. LA-Monroe (5 IP,10K,1BB) Feb. 9 Freed vs. Texas (5 IP, 1 team Error) Feb. 20 Goerl vs. UC Riverside (7 IP, 13K, 3BB) Mar. 1 Goerl vs. TAMUCC (5 IP, 7K, 1BB) Mar. 8 Goerl vs. No. 17 Iowa (7 IP, 12K, 2BB) Mar. 9 Freed vs. Virginia (7 IP, 10K, 1BB) BACK-TO-BACK HOME RUNS Feb. 16 Watley and Freed vs. No. 12 Nebraska HITTING STREAKS Name Longest Current Natasha Watley 30* 1 Amanda Freed 9 9 Stacey Nuveman 9 2 Stephanie Ramos 7 4 Claire Sua 7 1 Tairia Mims 6 1 Monique Mejia 6 1 *-Watley ended the 2001 season with a one-game hitting streak.
