STELLAR PITCHING Even though the Beavers went 1-1 last weekend at the Husky Softball Classic, it was a stellar weekend for Oregon State pitching. The two starters, Marina Demore and Tina Andreana, combined for 14 2/3 innings pitched, three hits, one earned run, four walks and 20 strikeouts. Demore rung up 11 batters in her start against USC Upstate and Andreana added nine of her own against Seattle. The 11 strikeouts by Demore and nine by Andreana are the top two strikeout performances of the season for the Beavers. OPENING DAY NO-NO The Oregon State pitching staff opened the 2011 campaign on nearly perfect. Sophomore Marina Demore and junior Paige Hall combined for the 14th no-hitter in Oregon State history. Demore pitched four perfect innings and was relieved in the fifth by Hall who closed out the no-hit bid. Oregon State won the opening day game, 8-0 in five innings. The lone walk in the game came in the fifth inning. PERFECT PAIGE The day after contributing to a no-hitter, Hall became the third pitcher in Oregon State history to throw a perfect game when she threw six perfect innings against Western Michigan striking out six batters in the process. The last time an Oregon State pitcher threw a perfect game was Monica Hoffman in 2002 when she blanked Hawai i for a 1-0 win. NIKKI, NIKKI CHANDLER Junior shortstop Nikki Chandler is already having a career year from the plate. She came into the 2011 campaign with a career batting average of.136 with just 18 career hits. This season is a different story. She has already tied her career-high in hits (12) and has already set a career high in RBIs (7). She leads the team in batting average for hitters with more than 20 at bats with a mark of.387 (12-for-31). BACK-TO-BACK The combined no-hitter by Demore and Hall and Hall s perfect game on back-to-back days was the shortest amount of time between no-hitters in school history. Monica Hoffman held the previous record at just six days. She threw a no-hitter against Oklahoma State on March 2, 2002 and threw her perfect game against Hawai i on March 8, SCHEDULE CHANGES The game against Fresno State that was to be played at the Cathedral City Classic will not be made up. 3 Head Coach Kirk Walker 17TH SEASON UCLA 88 Kirk Walker enters his 17th year as head coach of the Oregon State softball program, a program that has made a monumental turnaround under his direction. Walker reigns as Oregon State s all-time winningest softball coach with a career record. One of the best teams in Oregon State history, Walker s 2006 squad reeled off a school record 28-game winning streak (the longest for any team in the nation on the season), catapulted to a program-best No. 5 national ranking, and won both the NCAA Regional and Super Regional to earn a WCWS berth.
