1 2003 YEAR-IN-REVIEW UCLA BRUINS 2003 NCAA CHAMPIONS 47

2 2003 PAC-10 REVIEW The Pac-10 continued to be "The Conference of Champions" in the 2003 softball campaign, sending all eight teams to the NCAA Tournament for the third time in league history. For the third straight year, the Conference had four squads advance to the Women's College World Series (ARIZONA, CALIFORNIA, UCLA, and WASHINGTON). For an amazing tenth time in Pac-10 history, two Conference teams squared off in the National Championship Game with UCLA shutting out California to win its ninth NCAA softball title. The polls reflected a triumphant year for the Pac-10, as Conference schools finished in the final USA Today/NFCA Poll, including seven teams ranked in the top-25, with the Pac-10 holding four of the top ten spots (1. UCLA, 2. California, 3. Arizona, 6. Washington, 16. Oregon, 20. Arizona State, 23. Stanford). ARIZONA won its seventh Pac-10 title, with a 19-2 league record and advanced to the Women's College World Series before being ousted by California. The Bears' bid to repeat as National Champions fell one game short as they lost in the championship game to UCLA. UCLA had a six game winning streak heading into the Tournament and finished the season with a 14-game win streak. Washington, too, was hot down the stretch winning nine of its last eleven. The Huskies advanced to the Women's College World Series for the seventh time in school history, but lost to Pac- 10 foes Arizona and UCLA. The Oregon Ducks were the surprise team in the Pac-10 last season. Andrea Vidlund's stellar senior campaign helped the Ducks make it into the NCAA Tournament in coach Kathy Ardensen's first season at the helm. Cross-state rival, Oregon State advanced to the NCAA Tournament, behind All-Pac-10 performer Brynnen Guthrie. Arizona State, a regular in the postseason, advanced to the NCAA Regionals yet again. Rounding out the Pac-10, Stanford finished its season in the NCAA Regionals as well The Cardinal enjoyed a very successful non-conference season, going against non Pac-10 opponents. The awards continued to pile up for Pac-10 softball. The Conference had 16 players named Louisville Slugger/NFCA All-America, including eight named to the first team. UCLA s Natasha Watley won the Honda Award, which goes to the nation's most outstanding softball player. Watley also took home the Pac-10 Conference Player of the Year honor. Pac-10 Pitcher of the Year went to fellow Bruin Keira Goerl. Goerl had an era of 0.63 and recorded 40 wins. Arizona's Alicia Hollowell won Pac-10 Newcomer of the Year and Mike Candrea received Pac-10 Coach of the Year honors PACIFIC-10 CONFERENCE SOFTBALL STANDINGS Conference Overall W L T PCT HOME AWAY GB W L T PCT HOME AWAY NEUT STREAK Arizona*& Lost 2 UCLA^& Won 5 California& Lost 1 Oregon Lost 1 Washington& Won 4 Stanford Lost 2 Arizona State Lost 1 Oregon State Lost 1 ^ - NCAA Champion * - Conference champion (&) - Women s College World Series NCAA REGIONAL TOURNAMENT RESULTS RESULTS May 15-18, Double Elimination NCAA WOMEN s COLLEGE WORLD SERIES May 22-26, Don Porter Hall of Fame Stadium, Oklahoma City, Okla.
