1 OLYMPIANS/PLAYERS IN THE PROS GOLDEN BEARS GO INTERNATIONAL Since softball s inception as an Olympic sport in 1996, a Golden Bear player or coach has participated in each Games. Cal players have also competed for national teams during non-olympic years. After completing their careers at Cal in 2005, two-time All-Americans Kaleo Eldredge and Vicky Galindo competed for the USA over the summer. Eldredge, a centerfielder, played for the US Elite team. Galindo, a third baseman, led the USA Team Gold to the title game of the World Cup of Softball and finished second on the squad in batting (.455). In 2004, California head coach Diane Ninemire and senior Lindsay James and sophomore Chloe Kloezeman suited up for the inaugural Greek team at the Athens Games while Nicole DiSalvio ( ) returned for a second stint with Italy. At the Athens games, Ninemire was an assistant coach and James batted.211 (4-for-19) with three runs in starting all seven games for Greece, which went 2-5. DiSalvio pitched eight innings, allowed seven earned runs and 11 hits in 2004 for Italy. She also represented the Italian team at the 2000 Sydney games where she pitched 16.2 innings, allowed six runs (all unearned) and gave up five hits while recording 11 strikeouts. She finished with a 0-2 record, but earned a save after pitching an inning of relief in Italy s 1-0 win against New Zealand. In the summer of 1996, three former members of the Cal softball program - pitcher Michele Granger (USA), catcher Gillian Boxx (USA) and pitcher Lisa Martinez (Puerto Rico) - appeared in the initial Olympic tournament. Granger and Boxx helped lead the United States to the gold medal, while Martinez and Granger faced off as starting pitchers in the first-ever Olympic softball game. Boxx batted.250 with three RBIs, while Granger was 2-0 with a 0.87 ERA and 25 strikeouts. Her wins came in the opener against Puerto Rico and in the gold medal game against China. All four players are well represented in the Cal record book. Granger ( ) was a four-time All-American who completed her career with a mark, a 0.46 ERA and an NCAA-record 1,640 strikeouts. Boxx ( ), also a four-time All-American, batted a Cal-best.466 with 56 runs as a senior. Martinez ( ) was the NorPac Conference of the Year in 1985 and had a 0.22 ERA in Additionally, former Cal assistant coach Kim Maher, a standout at Fresno State, played for the United States in Gillian Boxx Nicole DiSalvio Michele Granger Lisa Martinez Lindsay James Chloe Kloezeman GOLDEN BEARS IN THE PROS Five former Cal players have been competing in the National Pro Fastpitch softball league. Lisa Iancin ( ) and Jocelyn Forest ( ) play for the New England Riptide, Chelsea Spencer ( ) competes for the Philadelphia Force, Kaleo Eldredge ( ) plays for the Arizona Heat, and Vicky Galindo ( ) plays for the Chicago Bandits.
