RHP Williams Perez battled rehabbing Royals LHP Danny Duffy through the first four scoreless innings, but the Naturals broke through with two runs in the 5 th. Springfield got on the board with one run in the 6 th and tied it with an RBI base hit from RF Shane Billings in the 7 th. However, the Naturals reclaimed the lead with a LF Nick Heath RBI single in the 7 th for a 3-2 advantage. The Cards again battled back when LF Conner Capel darted home on a passed ball with two outs in the 9 th, but the Naturals dealt the final blow in the 10 th with Cancel s decisive blast. Walk this way A couple of Cardinals have been among the most patient in the Texas League, with SS Kramer Robertson tied for 4 th with 11 free passes and OF Scott Hurst 6 th with 10 walks through just the first 17 games. Both Cardinals have had a career track record of being tough outs, with Hurst working 64 walks in his first 140 pro games for an early career OBP of.363 and Robertson posting a terrific walk-to-strikeout ratio with 81 free passes and only 99 Ks through his first 191 games in the pro ranks. Sacrifice is part of life OF Dylan Carlson leads the league with four sacrifice flies already this season, twice as many as any other Texas League hitter so far. With 13 career sac flies in 294 pro games, Carlson is already one sac fly away from matching his single-season high. Love the glove The Cardinals and Midland RockHounds have been the best fielding teams in the Texas League with a circuit-best.985 fielding percentage through the first 17 games of the campaign. Springfield has committed the fewest errors in the league with only nine miscues in 604 total chances, while also converting the 3 rd -most double plays at 16. Extra, Extra The Cardinals bats have provided some premium pop all season, tied with Midland for the 2 nd -most extra-base hits in the Texas League this year at 51. Springfield is 2 nd in the circuit with 30 doubles this season, just one behind the RockHounds, while ranking 3 rd in the league with 20 home runs, only trailing Amarillo (25) and Tulsa (23). Poodle Nation travels north The Amarillo Sod Poodles, Texas League affiliate of the San Diego Padres, make their first trip to Hammons Field during this four-game set from Monday Thursday. The Sod Poodles are in their first year of existence and have taken the place of the San Antonio Missions, who joined the Pacific Coast League (Triple-A). Since San Antonio had been the Padres previous affiliate in this league, there will be some familiar faces with the Sod Poodles, including their skipper and former Springfield hitting coach, Phillip Wellman. A Sod Poodle is another name for a prairie dog, a commonplace critter in the Texas panhandle.
