Last time Clinton was in Peoria, they were no hit by the Chiefs, a game started by Jaime Garcia, who was on rehab from the Cardinals. Lukas Schiraldi makes his third start of the season for Clinton, having only given up one run over ten innings pitched this season. Against Peoria in 5, Schiraldi made two starts, going with a. ERA over two starts spanning innings. The Chiefs only hit.5 against Schiraldi in that span. Peoria sends Brennan Leitao to the hill, making his second start of the year. Leitao spent last year plsit between State College and Johnson City, combining to go with a. ERA over appearances spanning 7. innings. About Yesterday: Looking for the series split, the LumberKings got a huge rally at an critical point in yesterday s game. Tied at one in the seventh, walked and Braden Bishop singled with one out, setting up Rafael Fernandez, who only had two hits on the season prior to that point. Fernandez came up bing, poking single to right field that scored Nieto and moved Bishop to third to make it Clinton. The LumberKings would add two more in the seventh, two in the eighth, and one in the ninth to cruise to a 7 victory and the series split. Starter Art Warren picked up a no decision, but allowed just one run over 5. innings. He is the only Clinton starter to have pitched into the sixth inning this season. Prospect Watch: The LumberKings have four of the top Mariners prospects (according to MLB Pipeline) on their Opening Day Roster. Outfielder Braden Bishop (9) and Luis Liberato (5), left handed starter Nick Wells (8) and shortstop Rayder Ascanio (7) comprise the list. Bishop, a rd round pick last season out of the University of Washington, hit. with the Everett AquaSox in 5. Liberato played sparringly with the LumberKings last year, but thrived in Everett, belting five home runs while driving in runs in 8 at bats. After coming over in a mid season trade with the Blue Jays, Wells allowed just two earned runs over 8 innings with the AquaSox. Ascanio at age 9 spent a week with Clinton last year, but played the majority of his time with Advanced A Bakersfield. First Inning Feats: The first inning so far this year for the LumberKings has been both feast and famine. Of the runs Clinton has scored so far this season, of them have been in the first inning. The former Texas Longhorn has not allowed a run since the first inning of his first start April 7th against Kane County. 3 LumberKings Coaching Staff Manager Mitch Canham (st Season) Mitch Canham begins his first season in the Seattle Mariners organization as the LumberKings manager. Born in Richland, Washington, Canham starred as a catcher at Oregon State University, playing alongside future MLB infielder Darwin Barney, and under legendary coach Pat Casey. While in Corvallis, Canham won back to back NCAA Division I national championships ( and 7).He parlayed his collegiate success into a Compensation A round pick by the San Diego Padres in 7, starting his career with High A Lake Elsinore of the California League. Canham played in the minor leagues from 7 until, reaching the AAA level playing with the Padres, Athletics, Cardinals, Royals, and Nationals. He is the founder and CEO of BASE By Pros LLC, an organization that provides personalized baseball instruction and mentorship to kids around the country. Pitching Coach Rich Dorman (nd Season) Rich Dorman begings his second stint as the LumberKings pitching coach in. Dorman was previously Clinton s pitching coach in under current Bakersfield Blaze manager Eddie Menchaca. The Medford, Oregon native begins his eighth season in the Mariners organization, having spent the last two seasons as the pitching coach for the AZL Mariners. Dorman also served two separate two year stints as the pitching coach for the Everett AquaSox (9, ). He was selected in the th round of the June draft by the Tampa Bay Devil Rays out of Western Baptist College. Dorman spent nine seasons pitching in the minor league, six of them with the Mariners. In the offseason, Dorman and his wife Cathy reside in Surprise, Arizona with their children Alexa Anne and Blake William. Hitting Coach Cesar Nicolas (st Season) Cesar Nicolas begins his first season as hitting coach with the LumberKings, as well as his first season as a coach in the Mariners organization. He spent seven seasons playing in the minor leagues, most recently with Acereros del Norte of the Mexican League. Nicolas, born in Queens, New York, was a fifth round draft pick by the Arizona Diamondbacks out of Vanderbilt in. He played in the Midwest League in 5 with the South Bend SilverHawks, hitting. with a.8 on base percentage, bashing home runs and 7 RBI. He spent his last two seasons of professional baseball with the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs of the independent Atlantic League. Coach Luis Caballero (st Season) Luis Caballero joins the LumberKings as a coach after spending the last four seasons as a player in the Seattle Mariners system. Originally signed by the Atlanta Braves out of Panama in, Caballero came to the Mariners in the trade that sent big league infielder Jack Wilson to Atlanta. He played in parts of three seasons with the LumberKings, making eight appearances in, 8 in, and ten last year before being promoted to AA Jackson, where he finished the 5 campaign. Athletic Trainer Shane Zdebiak (st Season) Shane Zdebiak begins his first season as the LumberKings trainer, his third in the Mariners organization. The Manitoba native spent the past two seasons as the trainer for the Everett AquaSox. Prior to joining the Seattle system, Zdebiak worked with the Steinbach Pistons of the Manitoba Junior Hockey League for two seasons. He spent the and spring trainings with the Atlanta Braves, and worked from seasons working with Winnipeg Goldeyes of the American Association of Independent Professional Baseball. Zdebiak graduated from the University of Manitoba with a B.A. in Kinesiology with a concentration in athletic therapy. He is certified as an athletic therapist through the Canadian Athletic Therapists Association, and certified as an athletic trainer through the National Athletic Trainers Association Board of Certification. Performance Specialist Paul Howey (nd Season) Paul Howey returns to the LumberKings for his second straight season as the club s performance specialist. The 5 season marked his first in the Mariners organization. Howey is in charge of monitoring each player s strength and conditioning regimen and designing workouts and diets that put the team in the best condition to succeed physically. He also coached baseball at McMurry University and Abilene Christian University, his alma mater. While at Abilene Christian, he played baseball and received his degree in exercise science. A Missouri native, Howey and his wife Liz reside in Searcy, Arkansas during the offseason.
