The baseball Bruins are under the leadershi of f irst-year coach Wade Withersoon. It's a young team with 11 of the 22 layers fres hmen or sohomores, eight of them freshmen. "The rogram has nowhere to go but u," says Withersoon. The Bruins were 5-25 a year ago. ~~~~e have a lot of returners with exerience on this team and the ones who are not r eturners make u for lack of exerience \vith talent." "We have a lot of otential to do well," says Withersoon. "If they ut together what they've learned in ractice, and don't make ~ny mental mistakes, we're going to win the one-run ball games we lost last year." Withersoon was assistant coach a season a go, following two years with the Bruins as a catcher as a senior Qnd an outfielder as a junior. He is originally from Cottage Grove. The 1983 Bruins will be lacking the ower hitters to hit the long balls and a ower itcher to shut out oonents. But Withersoon oints out that seed, deth, and no weak hitters in the lineu will make u the team's strengths. The Bruins will be without a southaw this year, but will have five strong starters and four relievers. Among the key returners is senior itcher Tom Evans, Cottage Grove, who won two games last year. Senior third base man Dave Case, who led the Bruins a year ago with a. 385 batting average also is back, as is junior outfielder John Votaw, Whittier, Calif., who broke the Bruin stolen base record with 25, and Scott Kwasnitza, a itcher/right fielder combination. The Bruins meet Eastern Oregon Wedne sday in a single game, then Thursday and Friday (Mar. 3-4) articiate in the Lewis and Clark State Tourney with three games. Saturday George Fox is at Northwest Nazarene for two seven-inning contests. About starting on the road, Withersoon says, "It' s going to be good to get out of the rain and go somelace where we can lay. '' "We'll be going u against some stiff cometition, but we have a week after the tri to work on our mistakes, he says. But that following game also will be on the road with three games Mar in The Dalles in the Judson Batist Tournament. George Fox 's first home game is Mar. 25 ~vith Eastern Oregon State. The Bruins will have 16 road game s and 14 at horne.
