3 Pt111tlle' Soitsllews EASTERN ILLINOIS UNIVERSITY -Charleston, IL sea1 LS -As_ e.sehcr// FC~ IMMEDIATE RELEASE (March 4) - Se./tcT CHARLESTON, IL.--Eastern Illinois University's baseball Panthers will begin their quest for a 16th consecutive season of.500 or better when they oen at Murray State for a three game series Saturday & Sunday (March 14-15). The Panthers will head to North Carolina shortly after that for a 15 game southern tri from March The first home game will be Tuesday, March 31 vs. MacMurray. The season concludes with the AMCU-8 Conference Tournament at Chicago on May EIU finished with a record in 1986 but was 4-7 in the Blue Division of the AMCU-8 so did not qualify for the league tournament. "We're a young team but if our to three itchers recover from injuries I think we'll be a decent club... without them, who knows," savs Coach Tom McDevitt. DAVE GOODHUE (FITHIAN-ARMSTRONG), BRIAN CORN (ELGIN) AND ERIC HILLMAN (HOMEWOOD-FLOSSMOOR) are the hurlers McDevitt is referring to, and all had offseason arm surgery. "I doubt if CORN itches at all. It's the second straight year he'd miss with arm troubles. GOODHUE and HILLMAN... both required surgery after hurting their arms last summer and are questionable. All three have the otential to be drafted, too," said McDevitt. GOODHUE, a senior righthander, was 7-4 last year while HILLMAN, a 6-9 junior lefty, was 4-3. These two combined for 98 strikeouts in 1/.3 innings. Therefore no one who is healthy itched an inning for EIU last sring which leaves McDevitt scrambling for a starting rotation.

MIKE DEESE (NAPERVILLE-CENTRAL), freshman lefty, is "resectable... the best of the freshman." JIM PRIMS (GLENVIEW-MAINE EAST), a senior righthander who itched a few innings a coule years ago, and DAVID SCOTT (DANVILLE), a junior transfer from St. Xavier, both "have a little exerience which means a lot in our situation," McDevitt said. Freshman recruits "who should see action", according to McDevitt, are GUY TAYLOR (MATTOON), SCOTT NELSON (BRADLEY-BOURBONNAIS) AND STEVE TORRICELLI (SPRINGFIELD). There are only two.300 hitters returning among the regulars. They are senior second baseman RICK STERIOTI (JOLIET-CATHOLIC), who batted.357 last year, and sohomore third baseman STAN ROYER (CHARLESTON) at.320. "Royer is a otential All-American. He had 23 homers and hit.486 last summer in a Wisconsin league and is ticketed to lace in Alaska this summer.. that's one of the three best summer collegiate leagues." "Sterioti is a solid erformer and absolutely a fine double lay man." The other two in that DP combination will be shortsto TIM BOGAR (ARLINGTON HEIGHTS-BUFFALO GROVE) and first baseman TERRY KEIGHER (JOLIET-WEST), both of who have earned letters. DANA LEIBOVITZ (EAST MOLINE-UNITED), a freshman who was drafted in the 23rd round by the New York Yankees, will be "in the lineu somewhere," says McDevitt. "He'll start some in left, lay third and when not at a osition will likely be the designated hitter." more

Veteran ALSWINN KIEBOOM (RICHTON PARK-MARIAN CATHOLIC) will be the starting catcher although will be challenged by freshman DAN HARGIS (METAMORA), who McDevitt says "may be the most imroved layer on the team between fall and sring.
