Doubleheader Data Notre Dame has played two doubleheaders in 2018, including one scheduled doubleheader against Saint Louis and Incarnate Word (1-1) in San Antonio and one due to forecasted weather at Miami (1-1). The Irish competed in seven doubleheaders in 2017, including two against different opponents. Notre Dame split six doubleheaders and was swept in one (versus Florida State). Getting Offensive The Irish offense tallied 27 runs in their first three games at LSU, the most to begin a season since they scored 28 from Feb , 2011, in the first three games of Mik Aoki s career as head coach at Notre Dame. The Irish faced Michigan State (L, 2-1), Purdue (W, 19-2) and Penn State (W, 8-5). The Irish scored 37 runs in their first five games for the first time since 2015 (also 37). ACC Co-Player of the Week Junior Eric Gilgenbach was named the ACC s Co-Player of the Week on Feb. 19 after hitting three home runs and driving in nine runs in Notre Dame s series win at No. 9 LSU. Gilgenbach hit a go-ahead three-run homer in the fourth inning on Feb. 18 and later added a grand slam in the ninth, becoming the first Irish player to drive in seven RBI in a single game since Jake Shepski had nine RBI against Virginia Tech in Gilgenbach owns four home runs, which surpass his 2017 season total as he appeared in 36 games and batted.333 with eight RBI. Gilgenbach s eight putouts led the team on Opening Day. Snowbird Classic Recap Notre Dame found itself in an early 4-0 deficit against Saint Joseph s but fought back and tied the game at 8-8 in the eighth inning on Tuesday at North Charlotte Regional Park. The Irish allowed two runs in the top of the ninth and fell, 10-8, to the Hawks. The Irish owned a 4-0 lead over Saint Joseph s heading into the ninth inning on Wednesday, but the Hawks rallied to plate six runs in the bottom of the ninth to come from behind and walk off against Notre Dame, 6-4. Talking Tully Left-hander Scott Tully is the longest-tenured player on the Irish roster. Tully, who graduated last year with degrees in political science and finance, is studying to receive his MBA in investments and business analytics. Oh, What an Opening Weekend Notre Dame won its opening series against No. 9 LSU at The Box from Feb The three-game series win marked Notre Dame s first against a ranked team on the road since winning the series against Rutgers in Notre Dame s win over LSU on Feb. 17 marked the team s first regular-season win against a top-10 team since April 10-12, 2015, when the Irish swept No. 7 Florida State at home. Notre Dame owns a 5-3 record against the Tigers in Baton Rouge. The Irish have gone 4-1 in their last five games at The Box, outscoring the Tigers in those contests. AT A GLANCE Filling in the Rotation Notre Dame entered the 2018 season looking to fill the void of its three weekend starters as well as its closer from last season. Former Irish starters Brad Bass, Michael Hearne and Brandon Bielak and closer Sean Guenther combined to go with a 4.21 ERA (139 ER/297.1 IP). The foursome recorded 267 strikeouts, 8.08 strikeouts/9.0 IP, and 2.47 strikeout/walk ratio (108 walks) Season Summary The Irish finished the 2017 season with a record, including a mark in the ACC. Notre Dame dropped back-to-back contests against Florida State (3-5) and Louisville (3-10) in the ACC Championship. Current junior Nick Podkul was named to the ACC s All- Tournament team in MLB Draft Six players from last year s roster were selected in the 2017 Major League Baseball Draft.
