4 Wh y We Ri d e Living, Riding With MS On the route of Bike MS a couple of years ago Sheila Miranda, a Bike MS veteran before she was diagnosed with MS in 2002, made a pact with a teammate to not get off their bikes to walk up the hills. It was her first year riding, there were a lot of hills and I wouldn t get off my bike, Miranda said. She got really mad at me because if I wouldn t get off she couldn t get off either. Miranda, who rode twice before being diagnosed and has participated three times since, hasn t let her MS keep her off her bike. Since my MS doesn t prohibit me from riding, I thought I should take advantage of my good health, Miranda said. It might be a good inspiration for riders who may see me as somebody to look up to. Those who can t ride are an inspiration to me because I know I m very fortunate. Miranda and her husband have been part of several teams and the event has grown in its meaning over the years. It brings people together whether or not they have a direct connection to MS, Miranda said. I was the same way and then all of a sudden I was diagnosed and then it took a different spin. The experience has also taught Miranda about how unselfish people can be. I love that the ride brings together a very positive spirit, she said. The cyclists feel great because they re doing something good and physically they re getting into shape. It s also very heartwarming for me to see all the volunteers who come out to help. As someone who lives and rides with MS, Miranda has also seen what she can do simply by asking. From being sort of a spokesperson or mascot of the team I ve learned you can inspire someone to do something that they never would have done before, she said. Staying positive and trying to keep others motivated is something that is very important. You can do whatever you want if you just try and try hard, just like getting over those hills. 1 Sheila Miranda and her husband Sidney with son Eric and daughter Carlie.

A legend of route colors will also be available at the start/finish line. CuraScript Express Route = Green 75-Mile Route = Orange Century Route = Blue REST STOPS Rest stops will be located every 8 to 12 miles along the 75-mile route, the century route and the CuraScript Express route. Stopping at rest areas will allow you to refuel and refill with sports drink and ice cold water. Snacks or energy bars will also be stocked at each area. However, flavors and quantities may be limited. If you require specific energy products, you will have to provide them for yourself. Rest stop locations are held at local businesses and at private residences. Please be respectful of their property and their thoughtfulness of hosting a Bike MS rest stop. Rest stops will be stationed every 8-12 miles on the 75-mile, century and CuraScript Express routes. Please be respectful of the property of our rest stop hosts who help to make Bike MS possible. On t h e Ro u t e 16

20 On t h e Ro u t e On Th e Ro u t e CENTURY ROUTE Driven cyclists who want to challenge themselves can choose to ride the century route each day. A modified 100-mile course has been designed which varies slightly from the original route. If you plan on riding the century route, please sign in at the last century rest stop each day and pick up your century patch. Riders must be at the Century cut off on the regular route by 10:30 a.m. on Saturday (22.8 miles) or by noon on Sunday (48.7 miles) in order to finish the century route by the official route closing time (6 p.m.) Cyclists after these times will be unsupported on the route (no SAG support or rest stops). Century, 75-mile and CuraScript Express (about 40 miles) routes will be available each day of Bike MS. Follow blue for century, orange for 75 and green for 40-mile route. CURASCRIPT EXPRESS ROUTE Back again in 2008 is the lower mileage CuraScript Express Route option (approximately 40 miles). This route will open at the same time as the other routes each day. On Saturday it will share a large portion of the route with the other cyclists. Riders will travel through the town of Harrisburg (at the 15-mile mark) that has a parade scheduled from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. You will be held at the start of the parade until it is over if you have not passed that location on the route. On Sunday, the CuraScript Express Route will be a completely independent route that will travel north of the Midway Expo Center. Lunch will be served for the CuraScript Express route at the Midway Expo Center. Although this route is shorter, it will be no less a challenge. The roads of Mid-Missouri have rolling hills and proper training is required. Please contact the Gateway Area Chapter of the National MS Society for additional information. 17

21 On Th e Ro u t e SAGs Support and Gear (SAG) vehicles will be traveling each route to provide support for cyclists in between rest areas. If you are feeling tired and need a little extra help, flag down a SAG driver for a lift to the next stop. By flashing the thumbs up sign to oncoming SAG drivers they will know you are cycling without problems, and seeing the thumbs down sign will SAG vehicles will travel each route to provide support. alert them to stop and give you a ride. If you need the assistance of a SAG vehicle, pull to the shoulder of the road, remove your helmet and wave it at the next SAG vehicle that passes by. SAG vehicles will be traveling in the opposite direction of the cyclists. Cyclists transported to the next rest stop will need to ride in the SAG vehicle until it returns back to the next rest stop or may be combined with other cyclists who would like to return to the Midway Expo Center. Due to the record number of cyclists, SAG drivers will not be able to transport gear, bags, medication or any other cyclist s items. We are not responsible for any items left in SAG vehicles. *IMPORTANT* Personal/Team SAG s will not be permitted to set up at rest stop locations. Due to the remote countryside location of Bike MS, many of our rest areas have to be located in Mid-Missouri residents front yards. As a result, the National MS Society, Gateway Area Chapter has signed a liability agreement with these residents to comply with national risk management guidelines. Only NMSS staff and volunteers are included under this policy. In addition, we have spoken with homeowners and have defined their expectations of what will take place in their front yard. Personal/Team SAG s are not involved in this process and have no way of honoring our agreements. We must remember that we are guests at their homes and it is thanks to their hospitality that this event can happen year after year. Personal/Team SAG s will not be allowed to pull into, park, or distribute any materials (including lunch) at an official Bike MS Rest Stop location. On t h e Ro u t e 18

22 On Th e Ro u t e MEDICAL Certified medical personnel will be located at the start/finish line, at each rest stop, and will also be traveling the route. Your health is important to us, so please ask if you need any assistance. If you need certain medications, please be sure to bring it with you to the Bike MS: Express Scripts Gateway Getaway Ride BIKE MECHANICS Bicycle mechanics from Maplewood Bicycle, Cyclextreme, Walt s Bicycle, Fitness and Wilderness Co., Big Shark Bicycle Co. and Ghisallo Sports will be at each rest stop to fix any problems that may occur. Bicycle mechanics will also be on hand Friday evening at the Midway Expo Center and will have supplies available for purchase and mechanics on hand to help. However, the mechanics are limited in the technology they can use in the field. Before you gear-up for Bike MS be sure to visit one of our participating bike shops for a tune-up. Thank you to these bike shops for providing the labor for the weekend of the Bike MS: Express Scripts MS Bike Ride. Thank You To Our Top Shops for their support during Bike MS.
