Thereafter it reduces to a four-lane single carriageway for the next 20kms, otherwise it is a two-lane single carriageway with paved shoulders and passing lanes on steep gradients. The last 10 km, known as the Kroonstad Bypass, is a four-lane dual carriageway. Ernest Zellhuber N2 Brookes Nek (provincial boundary) to Port Shepstone 135 km This first section of the N2 in KZN is a two-lane single carriageway with narrow paved shoulders. Passing lanes are provided on all the severe grades with the exception of a short 6 km section, 26 km north of Kokstad. A periodic maintenance contract between Brooksnek and Staffords Post is underway. Traffic is accommodated by Stop/Go controls, with expected delays of up to 20 minutes per closure. There are three closures in place. Occasional night closures can be expected. Motorists are advised to adhere to the reduced speeds as signposted. 12 N2 Port Shepstone to Durban (N2/N3 Interchange) 114 km The first 20 km is a single carriageway road with three lanes of traffic and narrow paved shoulders allowing overtaking opportunities. Thereafter the road becomes a four-lane dual carriageway with wide paved shoulders. The last 17 km leading into Durban has 3 lanes in each direction and is heavily trafficked. No construction Port Shepstone to Hibberdene: Amit Bhoora Hibberdene to Durban: Emeka Mgbemere (Route Manager) N2 Durban to Empangeni 162 km For 71 km, up to Stanger, the road is a four-lane dual carriageway. For the next 52 km, up to the Mtunzini Toll Plaza, the road is a four-lane undivided carriageway with paved shoulders. The remaining portion is a single carriageway with alternating passing opportunities. 1. A contract for the periodic maintenance of the N2 from EB Cloete to Mount Edgecombe Interchange is in progress, with construction work taking place at night between 20h00 to 04h00. Lane reductions will be in place 2. A contract for the upgrading of the N2/M41 Mount Edgecombe Interchange to a free-flow systems interchange is in progress. Traffic is being accommodated on temporary deviations, with speed restrictions in place. Traffic travelling on the M41 from Umhlanga towards the N2 North (towards King Shaka Airport) is being temporarily diverted onto a loop ramp. This diversion requires traffic to keep left on the M41 as the right turn movement is closed. Stop/Go controls are in place on the Mt. Edgecombe Drive underpass. 3. A contract for localised realignment of the N2 at Umhlali River Bridge and at Umvoti River Bridge is in progress. No Stop/Go controls will be in place, but reduced lanes and speed restrictions will be in place. 4. A contract for the upgrade of the N2 to a dual carriageway freeway between Mtunzini Toll Plaza and Empangeni T-junction is in progress. No Stop/Go controls will be in place. 5. A contract for the maintenance of the north coast toll plazas is in progress. There is minimal disruption to traffic except on certain ramp toll plazas. 1. 14 N3 N3 Durban to Cedara (Hilton) 85 km This entire section is a multi-lane dual carriageway. The first 4km out of Durban carries heavy traffic with up to 5 lanes in each direction. The next 40 km, up to Cato Ridge, has 3 lanes in each direction with wide paved shoulders. The section between Cato Ridge and the end of the Pietermaritzburg Bypass (33 km) has a two-lane plus paved shoulder configuration, except on steep gradients to the east of Pietermaritzburg where passing lanes are provided. The final 14 km to Howick incorporates the steeply graded Town Hill, which has 3 lanes with paved shoulders in each direction. 1. A contract for the upgrade of the Hammarsdale Interchange is ongoing. Periodic blasting will occur for the next month. There will be minimal disruption to traffic on the N3, with the existing three lanes reduced to two lanes in each direction in the vicinity of the interchange, however there will be disruption to local traffic. 2. There is intermittent closure of the slow lane on the southbound carriageway of Town Hill for surface repairs. Motorists are advised to pay attention to the road signs and speed restrictions. 1. Until November Until October Emeka Mgbemere (Route Manager) N3 (The N3 Toll Route operated by N3 Toll Concession (RF) Proprietary Limited Cedara to Heidelberg 415 km This section of road is a public private partnership between SANRAL and the N3Toll Concession (Pty) Ltd. This toll route is a four-lane dual carriageway road between Cedara and the Tugela Toll Plaza. From the Tugela Toll Plaza to the Wilge Toll Plaza (Villiers) the road is a four-lane single carriageway with shoulders of varying width. The section between the Tugela Toll Plaza and Warden has at-grade intersections and access roads with reduced speed limits signposted. The remainder of the road between Villiers and Heidelberg is a four-lane dual carriageway with paved shoulders. Current planned construction works include: 1. Rehabilitation between Cedara and Mooi River. Work commenced in April 2017 and is programmed for completion in February Rehabilitation between Frere Interchange and the Sand River near the Bergville Interchange. Work commenced in November 2016 and is programmed for completion on 28 February Rehabilitation between Harrismith and Warden. Work commenced in January 2015 and is programmed for completion by September Rehabilitation between Warden and Villiers commences 1 August 2017 and is programmed for completion by December routine road maintenance, grass cutting and litter collection. Through the construction zones, traffic may be restricted to one lane in each direction under reduced speed. Road users are urged to obey the posted speed limits, maintain safe following distances and to refrain from littering. Abbotsdale to Voortrekker Road Interchange (Malmesbury) The speed limit throughout the construction area has been lowered to 40 60km/h and to be adhered to. Winding curves have been introduced as a further traffic calming mechanism. Road construction is taking place 4km South and 5km North of Malmesbury Interchange. The N7 Southbound dual carriageway and North of Darling Road Interchange, have been closed and Traffic on the Southbound carriageway has been diverted onto the Northbound carriageway halfway between the Voortrekker and Darling road interchanges. Public is advised to be alert to possible traffic diversions onto completed sections of the newly constructed carriageway approximately 4km before Malmesbury when approaching from the Cape Town side. All off-ramps remain functional but slightly hidden/obscured and the public is therefore requested to drive slowly and be alert to the directional signage provided at the off ramps. A dedicated lane for heavy vehicles to stop and engage lowest gear is in operation on the Southbound carriageway between the Voortrekker Road and Darling Road off-ramps. Stop/Go control points are an exception and are generally operational only in the event of routine maintenance being carried out on the existing road surface. A series of speed bumps will be reintroduced on both the ingoing /outgoing carriageways in Bokomo Rd in Malmesbury (R315) also as a traffic calming measure for the safety of construction personnel, pedestrians and the public in general. Due to the urban environment many pedestrians can be expected to be crossing the road for which extra caution is necessary. Voortrekker Road Interchange (Malmesbury) to Hopefield Intersection Road construction is taking place north of Malmesbury s Voortrekker Road Interchange to past the Hopefield/ Vredendal intersection. The speed limit throughout the construction area has been lowered to 40-60km/h and to be adhered to. Work is proceeding on the new northbound carriageway of the N7 and on the re-aligned section of the R45, as well as at certain sections of the new local access roads. Traffic is currently accommodated on the existing two-lanes, two-way sections of the N7 and the R45 and there are no road closures or stop-go controls in place, but there are numerous truck crossings in operation and trucks hauling material along the length of the project, thus travelers are urged to obey the posted speed limits for safety purposes. 23 Due to the wet conditions that exist during and after rains, and the muddy conditions that follow this within the working areas, travelers may experience sections of the N7 and R45 with mud deposits on the road surface, and caution is advised. Work on the new R45 intersection bypass/deviation has been delayed and it is now anticipated that traffic will only be deviated onto this section in the 2 nd half of August, to allow excavation and bridge construction to proceed for the new Hopefield Interchange. 24 N7 Clanwilliam to Western Cape /Northern Cape Border km Single carriageway with paved and / or gravel shoulders Fair Trawal - Klawer The speed limit throughout the construction area has been lowered to 40-60km/h and to be adhered to. Rumble strips and temporary speed humps will be installed to enforce this. The construction work is behind temporary concrete barriers. Motorist can encounter a day & night Stop/Go closure at the Olifants River crossing until October The average waiting period is minutes. In an emergency the traffic will be diverted onto about 8km of gravel road via Trawal, a low level crossing over the Olifants River and the Melkboom Road, but with rising river levels this might not always be possible. The waiting time is about 60 minutes. Motorists must also be aware of abnormal/ heavy vehicles entering and exiting the roadway. Abnormal vehicles are diverted at Clanwilliam to Lamberts Bay (60 km surfaced); towards Vredendal (55 km gravel) which is very slippery when wet and about 10 km surfaced towards Klawer. We would like to urge the public to obey all road signs and to stick to the reduced speed limits.
