A compulsory stop, manned by the Provincial Traffic Department, is in operation ± five km south of Touws River. An unmanned compulsory stop for heavy vehicles is also in operation on the southbound carriageway in Hex River Pass. Contact for Routine Jerome Buys Construction Work Beaufort West (km 1.2) to Nelspoort (km 45.0): Construction works affecting the travelling public are in progress throughout the length of the contract. Motorists will encounter two or three manually and traffic-light controlled day and night Stop/Go sections approximately 4 km in length - for final seal operations - with a waiting period less than 10 minutes under normal traffic conditions (15 minutes in high traffic periods). Up to two shoulder/lane closures will be in place - for asphalt and clearing works - allowing the two directional flow of traffic. The speed limit throughout the construction area has been lowered, to either 80 km/h and/ or 60 km/h. The road will be open to two way traffic throughout the Easter weekend from 2 April 2015 to 7 April 2015, although the slow southbound lane on the approach to Beaufort West will be closed to traffic Please note that the information contained herein could be subject to change. Fair to good. Upgrading of the section between Trompsburg and Fonteintjie has commenced. Traffic will be diverted onto deviations with no Stop/Go controls at both ends of the project. Until December 2016 Riaan Louwrens N1 Bloemfontein to Kroonstad 189 km Around Bloemfontein and extending northwards for some 15km, the road is a four-lane dual carriageway with wide paved shoulders. Thereafter it reduces to a four-lane single carriageway for the next 20kms, otherwise it is a two-lane single carriageway with paved shoulders and passing lanes on steep gradients. The last 10 km, known as the Kroonstad Bypass, is a four-lane dual carriageway. Generally good except for the section between Kroonstad and Ventersburg, where the road surfacing is in a fair condition. 1. Upgrading of section between Sydenham Interchange and Glen Lyon has commenced. No Stop/Go controls in place. 2. Route Manager) N1 Kroonstad to Vaal River (Free State Gauteng Provincial Boundary) 102 km Partly a single carriageway with alternating passing lanes in each direction and wide gravel shoulders, and partly a four-lane single carriageway, except for the 10 km portion beyond the Vaal Toll Plaza, where it becomes a four-lane dual carriageway with wide paved shoulders.. 1. A rehabilitation contract between Kroonstad South and Westleigh has commenced. Traffic is free flowing and accommodation in one lane per direction. Climbing lanes are provided on all the severe grades with the exception of a short 6 km section, 26 km north of Kokstad.. 1. Motorists to be aware of construction activity at the Staffords Post Interchange (/R56). Traffic will be diverted onto a temporary deviation during the construction phase. Reduced speeds are signposted. 2. Major road construction between Murchison and Port Shepstone is in progress. Speed restrictions are in place. Motorists to be aware of construction vehicles, pedestrians and school children. Traffic calming measures in place. Traffic signal interruptions at the Shell service station, near (Marburg toll plaza) to the intersection at the corner of Izotsha and Oscar Borchers Road. All motorists are urged to treat the traffic light signals as four-way stop streets for the period of the construction. 1. Completion by July Completion by June Amit Bhoora Port Shepstone to Durban (/N3 Interchange) 114 km The first 20 km is a single carriageway road with three lanes of traffic and narrow paved shoulders allowing overtaking opportunities. Thereafter the road becomes a four-lane dual carriageway with wide paved shoulders. The last 17 km leading into Durban has 3 lanes in each direction and is heavily trafficked.. 1. Periodic maintenance from Mzinto to Mkomazi River is in progress. Traffic is restricted to single lanes in work areas. 2. Periodic maintenance from Umlaas Canal to EB Cloete Interchange commenced in August Work is being carried out at night between 18h00 and 05h00. Traffic may be restricted to single lanes in work zones. 1. Until November Until December 2015 Port Shepstone to Hibberdene: Amit Bhoora Hibberdene to Durban:24hr number Mark Jordaan (Route Manager) Durban to Empangeni 162 km For 71 km, up to Stanger, the road is a four-lane dual carriageway. For the next 52 km, up to the Mtunzini Toll Plaza, the road is a four-lane undivided carriageway with paved shoulders. The remaining portion is a single carriageway with alternating passing opportunities.. 1. Major improvements to Umgeni Road Interchange will result in disruptions to traffic on the and cross roads. This diversion requires traffic to keep left on the M41 as the right turn movement is closed. 3. Capacity improvements between Umdloti Interchange and Tongaat Toll Plaza are in progress. The first 4km out of Durban carries heavy traffic with up to 5 lanes in each direction. The next 40 km, up to Cato Ridge, has 3 lanes in each direction with wide paved shoulders. The section between Cato Ridge and the end of the Pietermaritzburg Bypass (33 km) has a two-lane plus paved shoulder configuration, except on steep gradients to the east of Pietermaritzburg where climbing lanes are provided. The final 14 km to Howick incorporates the notorious, steeply graded Town Hill, which has 3 lanes with paved shoulders in each direction.. 1. Rehabilitation between Candella Road and Paradise Valley commenced in July Lane closures and reduced speeds will be signposted. The works will be undertaken at night between 18h00 and 05h00, and Sundays between 05h00 and 14h A contract for repairs of the road pavement between Sanctuary Road and Cedara has commenced. 14 N3 (The N3 Toll Route operated by N3 Toll Concession (Pty) Ltd) Cedara to Heidelberg 415 km This section of road is a public private partnership between SANRAL and the N3Toll Concession (Pty) Ltd. This toll route is a four-lane dual carriageway road between Cedara and the Tugela Toll Plaza. From the Tugela Toll Plaza to the Wilge Toll Plaza (Villiers) the road is a four-lane single carriageway with shoulders of varying width. The section between the Tugela Toll Plaza and Warden has at-grade intersections and access roads. The remainder of the road between Villiers and Heidelberg is a four-lane dual carriageway with paved shoulders.. Current planned construction works include: 1. Rehabilitation between Mooi River and Estcourt commenced October 2013 and is programmed for completion on 31 August Rehabilitation between the Sand River and Keeversfontein commenced October 2013 and is programmed for completion on 31 August Rehabilitation between Harrismith and Warden. Commenced January 2015 and is programmed for completion on 30 April routine road maintenance, grass cutting and litter collection. Through the construction zones, traffic may be restricted to one lane in each direction under reduced speed. During peak traffic period 2 April to 6 April and 24 April to 27 April, there will be 2 lanes open to traffic in both directions. No work is planned for those periods unless an emergency arises. 18 N5 Bethlehem to Winburg 120 km A two-lane single carriageway with varying width of either paved or gravel shoulders. There are overtaking opportunities where severe grades occur. A contract for the repair and reseal between Bethlehem and Vals River commenced in September Traffic is accommodated by two-way traffic where the road width allows. 3.
