3 What The Public Ask Us This is a new section of the newsletter that features questions that members of the public have asked us. We feel you might be interested in some of the answers to these queries. If you have a general question, please let us know and we will do our best to answer it! Could you tell me what rules of the roads apply to cycling? There are many rules that apply to cyclists, to find out guidance and the law please use the link below Rules for cyclists (59 to 82) The Highway Code rules for cyclists, including an overview, road junctions, roundabouts and crossing the road. ( The numbers of people choosing to cycle for fun, fitness or to get to work has increased by more than a quarter in twenty years and an incredible 3.2 billion miles are cycled on our roads every year. Parking Issues advice to consider:- Your parking could be putting someone s life in danger! Inconsiderate parking can put other people s safety at risk. If your parking forces someone to walk or cycle off course, you should not park there. It is not the responsibility of the Police, Council or School to find safe and lawful parking, it is the responsibility of the driver. When parking DO NOT:- Cause an unnecessary obstruction: Park on or within 10 meters of a junction Park on the verge or pavement blocking pedestrian access Park across driveways or drop kerbs Park on double yellow lines Park in restricted zones outside of schools or on yellow zigzag lines. In the interest of the safety of the children, local residents and other road users we will be enforcing parking regulations and therefore request that you park your vehicle responsibly, give due consideration to other road users, local residents and pedestrians. 3

6 Advice following on from recent purse snatch/pickpocket It is important to always be aware of your surroundings and the people nearby. Pickpockets often operate in pairs and use distraction techniques to avert your attention whilst they steal from your bag. Wear your bag across your body, so that it opens on the side facing you. In winter, wear your coat over your bag to hide it. Never leave your bag unattended in a shopping trolley or basket or on the back of a pushchair always keep it with you. Avoid carrying valuables in the outside pockets of rucksacks and bags. If you use a wheelchair or motorised scooter, keep your valuables in front of you, rather than hanging them on the back of the chair where thieves can dip into them. Keep your bag or briefcase where you can see it or feel it on your lap or touching your feet, not hung on the back of your chair when you re eating or having a drink. Keep your keys in a different pocket from anything that has your address on it. Don t keep the PIN for your cash card with you. Keep the emergency number to cancel your credit cards with you so that you can phone immediately if you have to. Recent spate of car key burglaries in Warwickshire Lock the doors and close the windows, sunroof when you leave the car for any length of time. Don t leave anything on display even a jacket can seem like any appealing target for a thief. Remove sat nav devices where possible, including the support cradle and suction pad. Remember to wipe away suction pad marks left on the window screen or dashboard Never store vehicle documents in the car. Use a steering lock and additional alarm in older vehicles Keep your keys out of sight away from doors and windows in a safe place in your house. When entering your house secure the door behind you. Your keys are as valuable as your car, look after them. If possible put your car in a garage overnight. 6
