Warwickshire Police Rugby Town West Safer Neighbourhood Team (SNT) May 2018 Admirals Bilton Cawston - New Bilton - Overslade Caldecott (Non town areas) Welcome to the May 2018 Rugby Town West Newsletter, where you can find the latest crime statistics, stories and news for your area. The team are working together to combat issues across the Town West area and also working closely with teams from other areas to combat issues such as crime and anti-social behaviour. Make sure to visit the Rugby Town West website at Warwickshire Police - Rugby Town West for up-to-date information on events, drop-in sessions and team priorities; where you can have your say. Rugby Town West is the largest town policing area in Rugby and holds the biggest population of all the areas covered by Rugby Police Station. The area is very diverse and often challenging with new and different issues arising. 2 Appeals, Updates, Information and Advice A New Style of Courier Scam Sees 3 Victims Hand Over 25,000 To Criminals A warning to Warwickshire residents if you get a suspicious call from people claiming to be the Police who are 'investigating fraud'. The victims, who live near Winchester, were telephoned by fake officers who told them they were investigating fraud. They were asked to withdraw cash and check the serial numbers on the notes before being told some of the money was counterfeit and a courier would be sent to collect it. Police fear there may be more victims who are yet to report the scam, and this scam can easily be replicated in other areas. Residents should always remain cautious over any unsolicited phone call or claiming to be your bank or the Police. TOP TIPS The Police will NEVER ask you to withdraw money. If you do receive this, or similar, calls - put the phone down. Any information regarding the call can be reported to Warwickshire Police (via 101), Action Fraud ( ), or Warwickshire Trading Standards ( via Citizens Advice Consumer Service on ). If you fall victim to a scam, you can contact Warwickshire Victim Support, on , for emotional support following this. COMMUNITY MESSAGING SERVICE Community Messages inform members of local communities about crimes and activity in their area as well as delivering useful crime prevention advice. This is a new streamlined messaging system that enables us to pass on vital information and messages to members of the community we might struggle to reach on individual level. If you have not registered yourself please do so - it's a straightforward process. More information can be found on

SAFE PLACES SCHEME Safe Places are community places (e.g. a shop, community centre) where you can go to get help if you feel unsafe or at risk when you are out and about. If you are feeling unsafe or at risk you can go to your nearest Safe Place and ask for them to help you contact your support worker, family member, carer or the police. You will know it is a Safe Place as it will have a sticker in the window. List of Safe Places in and around Rugby: Stagecoach Travel Railway Terrace Rugby Borough Council Town Hall, Evereux Way The Queen s Diamond Jubilee Centre Bruce Williams Way Ryton Pool County Park Ryton Road, Ryton on Dunsmore Wolston Library Warwick Road, Wolston Vision Express Market Mall, Clock Tower Shopping Centre McDonald s Market Place Rugby Library Little Elborow Street The area of Rugby Town West SNT is suffering with a lot of vehicle crime and a lot of shed break ins. Here is some information how to improve the security. VEHICLE SECURITY There have been a lot of incidents reported related to vehicle crime. A few simple steps might prevent your vehicle becoming a target: - Lock the doors and close the windows and the sun roof when you leave the car for any length of time. - Don t leave anything on display even a jacket can seem like an appealing target for a thief. - Remove satellite navigation devices where possible, including the support cradle and suction pad. Remember to wipe away any suction pad marks left on the windscreen or dashboard. - Never store vehicle documents in the car. - Use a steering lock and additional alarm in older vehicles. - Keep your keys out of sight, even in your house.

SHED SECURITY DON T GIVE THIEVES SHED LOADS OF OPPORTUNITIES! When asked what is in their shed, many people will answer something like Just a few old tools, A bit of fishing tackle ; The kids toys or Nothing much just junk. Because people think that the contents of their shed have little value they pay little attention to shed security. But what if you had to replace the contents of your shed, just how much would it cost? Is the security on your shed really up to the job? Follow these few simple guidelines to reduce the chances of your shed falling prey to thieves. Fit a good quality closed shackle padlock to the door Hasp and staples should be bolted through the door Secure the hinges by using either clutch screws or by replacing a couple of screws with bolts Fit grilles or mesh to the windows Old net curtains on the inside of the windows can hide the contents of your shed Invest in an alarm Large items such as bicycles should be chained together. It is much more difficult for a thief to carry away a lot of large heavy items at once Mark your property with your postcode and house number/name Register your property at

Crime Prevention Advise as the weather turns warmer Don't let burglars have easy access to your home During the warm weather people are more likely to leave their doors and windows open to ventilate their properties. Walk in burglaries do increaseduring the Summer months, so don t be complacent, if you cannot see the door or window then it should be shut and locked. If you are out enjoying your garden, remember to shut and lock all windows on the front of your property. Enjoy your summer holiday but make sure your home looks lived in whilst your away Use timer switches on lights to make you re home look occupied in the evenings If possible leave a car in your driveway or ask a neighbour to park their car on your driveway whilst you re away. Ask a neighbour to check on your home while you re away and move any post out of sight. Cancel any regular delivers such as milk and newspapers. If you have a lawn cut it before you go away and trim back any bushes or shrubs that burglars could hide behind. Lock away any valuable items such as pedal cycles they may be safer in your home than in an outhouse or shed. Get on your bike and make the most of the warmer weather but make sure you protect your bike Mark the frame of you bike with your postcode and house number using a UV pen or tamperproof label. Keep details of the frame number, make, model and type of bike and also take a photograph. Register your bike on a free online property database which the police use to check stolen property. Never leave your bike unlocked even if you re just popping into the newsagents for a couple of minutes. The best kind of lock is a quality solid steel D-shaped shackle lock.

Always lock your bike to something solid like a lamp-post or railings, preferably in a public area. If you have a quick release wheel, take off your front wheel and local it to the frame and back wheel. If you have a pump or detachable lights, take them with you when you leave your bike. Make sure you have adequate insurance cover for your bike. Enjoy day trips out in the warmer weather but make sure you secure your car Don t leave valuables in your car even if you know that the bag on the front seat is empty, a thief may still try their luck. Remove your sat nav and its holder from your car, don t leave it in the glove box as this is the first place a thief will look and make sure you wipe away any suction markers from the holder. Remember to shut your windows and sunroof when you leave your car. Use an approved steering lock and gear clamp. Set your immobiliser and alarm if you have one fitted. Please report any crime to 101 or 999 in if an emergency, not on social media as this may not get reported. Crimes need to be reported as deployment is demand based. We will be stepping up our Anti-Social Behaviour patrols as the weather improves and will be involving the Fire Brigade with this and other agencies.
