Mr. Knievel goes to Washington MONTANA STANDARD In December of 1961, Robert Evel Knievel was a man on a mission. No, it had nothing to do with jumping over numerous buses. Nor was he attempting to clear the 141-foot fountain at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas. Instead, he was about to take on the federal government. Upset by the slaughter of Yellowstone National Park s rangeless elk, the 23-year-old hitchhiked across country to Washington, D.C., to plead his case to the powers that be. Besides his backpack, he carried a pair of elk antlers. Well, as you can see from the photographs, he did, indeed, make it to the nation s capital, with antlers in tow. According to The Montana Standard of Dec. 15, 1961, Knievel s trip was a success. The Butte stuntman was also able to convince the Interior Department to trap the elk and transport them in Montana, Wyoming and Idaho.

4 4 Thursday, July 27, 2017 Evel Knievel Days EVEL KNIEVEL DAYS back for 16th year July MONTANA STANDARD STAFF Evel Knievel Days is back for its 16th time in Butte July 27-29, keeping its distinction as the city s longestrunning festival and by far its zaniest. It is free and open to everyone. This year, it will focus on honoring military veterans. For example, the annual Friday night motorcycle parade will be led the National American Legion Riders. Chive On is raising money for a van to drive veterans to medical appointments. It also marks the 51st anniversary of the year in which our late namesake, the world s greatest daredevil Evel Knievel began his professional motorcycle stunt performance career in Indio, California, Stephen Coe, a top organizer, told commissioners in a letter detailing the upcoming event. Knievel was born and raised in Butte, launching into worldwide fame in the 1960s and 1970s with breathtaking motorcycle jumps, some flawless and some ending with spectacular crashes. He survived them all but still holds the Guinness World Record for most broken bones in a lifetime 443. Knievel and longtime friend Bill Rundle founded the festival in 2002 and it is still going strong, drawing thousands of visitors each year even after Evel s death in In 2015, Gregg Godfrey set a world record by jumping a semi 166 feet and Bryan Spangler set the mark for a backwards jump, launching off a ramp in reverse and traveling 126 feet. Last year, Jesse McCloud honored his grandfather Evel by sailing a motorcycle over two pickups to replicate Knievel s first professional jump 50 years ago. This year promises more extreme stunts (to be announced) and events to increase family attendance and community-giving. The Kid Knievel Area will take over most of the Original Mine Yard and will include a return of the BASE Jumpers. There also will be a track for kids to ride bikes, scooters and skateboards, Coe has told commissioners. For the first time, Seattlebased Skate Like A Girl Foundation plans to create an immersive educational experience for kids both boys and girls by teaching them to skateboard with safety and self-confidence. There will also be fly-fishing demonstrations and science exhibits by the Clark Fork Watershed Education Program. Local Favorite Levi Renz will join Fitz s Army to round out the Freestyle Motocross Show. Among the attractions at this year s event: REAL KAMAKAZIE KID Wyoming s only DaRe- DeViL, Levi KaMaKaZiE KiD Troutman has been doing stunts such as breathing fire, body burns and suicide car explosions for six years now. He has appeared on American Daredevils on History Channel, Nitro Circus, Destroyed in Seconds, and the CBS Sunday Morning News, KCWY News 13 Casper, Wyo., K2 ABC News Casper, Wyo. During his 2015 appearance at Evel Knievel Days in Butte, the KaMaKaZie Kid ran through 10 burning walls, breaking his own world record set in 2012 when he ran through three fire walls. SEATTLE COSSACKS Wherever the Seattle Cossacks ride, people watch and wonder in fascination, waiting for the next man to climb higher. No ropes, no props, no skyhooks, no gimmicks. How can they do that on motorcycles? The stunts, motorcycles (and the applause) have been going on for more than 75 years. It began in the 30s with a group of racers and hill climbers who developed stunts to entertain themselves between events; Butte s own Levi Renz does tricks while jumping a snowmobile during a freestyle motocross jumping event during Evel Knievel Days in Walter Hinick, The Montana Standard entertaining fans came later. The first organizational meeting took place in January 1938 with a group of Seattle racers, riders, delivery personnel, business men, and other interested folks. By April they had a formal organization and a set of by-laws that included to entertain and promote the positive image of motorcycling (the emphasis on Promoting rider safety came later) but what to call themselves? Russia s cavalry members, the Cossacks, were known the world over for their masterful horsemanship, and bikes were often called Iron Horses in those days. Thus, the name Seattle Cossacks was coined. Formal practices began and by the end of 1938 the group was well-known in the Seattle area. The oldest is a 1930 VL and the newest a CI. There are 74 and 80 VL s, UL s, and 45 s, and 61 and 74 Knuckleheads. All bikes are stock except for the handlebars, which are late-50s Flanders, these great old bikes are sturdy and stable enough to bear the weight of multiple riders. Experience on the current team is extensive and impressive, and contributes much to the group s cohesiveness. One member has devoted 46 years to the Cossacks; four others have over 30 years each and the remainder have 1 to 26 years of experience. Current members are from 27 to 74 years old, and the roster has included brothers, as well as fathers and sons. AERIAL ASSAULT TEAM Aerial Assault Team of Logan, Utah, is a touring theatrical trampoline show. We tell the story of three very unlikely friends: Captain No Beard, Slayer the Ski Bum, and Mr. Good-looking. 11 Evel Knievel Days Thursday,July 27, FAR LEFT: With the help of Butte s police force, Evel Knievel, laid out on a stretcher, is taken off a jet June 11, 1975, at the Bert Mooney Airport. In an unsuccessful attempt to jump 13 buses at London s Wembley Stadium on May 26, 1975, the stuntman fractured his pelvis, crushed a vertebra and damaged his right hand. The young daredevil cleared the trucks with ease and made the jump twice before a crowd of several thousand.
