BOBCAT PRiDE Northeastern School District March 27, 2015 This weekend, eight of our students represented NHS in the York College of Pennsylvania High School Model United Nations Conference. I am excited to announce that three of them won Best Delegate awards from their committees (there were only five committees)! This also means that our Bobcats took home more awards than any other school present at the conference! Front row: Riley Cagle, LaElla Dickerson, Allie Holler, Jacob McKenzie, Jordan Reeser, Jon Altland and Destiny Eisenhour. Back row: Rachel McJunkins, Lindsay Myers Please congratulate Best Delegate winners, Riley Cagle, Lindsay Myers, and Destiny Eisenhour when you see them this week! Mt. Wolf s first grade had a blast at the Maryland Science Center. What a way to enrich our curriculum and get our hands on SCIENCE!
Senior Alaina Einsig has been engaged in an Independent Research in Science (IRIS) program at NHS, studying astrophysics with mentor and physics teacher, Ms. D Orazio. On March 20, 2015, Alaina presented her research on Inflation Theory, a counter-argument to the Big Bang Theory, regarding the creation and expansion of the universe. Alaina thanked teachers Ms. D Orazio, Ms. Byrne, and Ms. Fertenbaugh for their support. Alaina is headed to Dickinson College next year to study astrophysics! We are proud of your hard work Alaina!! Senior girls basketball players, Payton Hauck and Ashley Myers, have been selected to play in the White Rose Senior All-Star game at Dover High School on March 22 at 2pm. All the girls basketball coaches in York County voted on players, and Payton and Ashley were selected on this basis. Congrats Ladies!!! Coach Muraco shares that two of his senior wrestlers, Levi Eisenhart and Peter Gordineer, were slated to appear in the YAIAA All- Star match held on March 17, 2015 at Spring Grove HS. Both of these young men declined to participate, instead choosing to support their former teammate and friend, Anthony Lease (Class of 14) whose mother recently passed away. The young men chose to attend the viewing instead of the match. We know they made the right decision and we are proud of their leadership and maturity. They are great! Students with amazing futures ahead of them, and we are proud to have them associated with Northeastern High School. Thanks to Coach Muraco for sharing. Northeastern School District has been partnering with ModernEYES Optical as part of their "No Child's VISION Left Behind" program since December of 2013 to help Northeastern students that need glasses but can t afford them. In return, for every two pairs of glasses purchased by our group, we receive a certificate good for one of our students to get a FREE pair of glasses, frame AND lenses! Parents and teachers, should you have a student who is in need of glasses please contact Kathy Minnich at (717) So far to date, our faculty has already saved $2,107 on their eyeglasses at ModernEYES and ModernEYES has provided 12 FREE PAIRS OF GLASSES for our students in need!!! ModernEYES Optical is located on the 1 st level of the Galleria Mall in York & in Lancaster at Chelsea Square at 1635 Manheim Pike. 3 On March 24, while students had a relaxing day off, teachers and staff focused on learning. K-5 Staff participated in a review and discussion of the new EDM math materials, 4-6 Grade Science teachers were found working on curriculum alignment, ELA teachers made adaptations and improvements based on the performance analyses done this year, Emotional Support staff and Special Education Paraprofessionals participated in a full day of Mental Health First Aid, while Middle School and High School Staff spent their day in sessions focusing on HS Math professional development, Discovery Education, Quizlet and Thinklink, Inproving Instruction with Blended Learning Rotation Model, Google Classroom for beginners, Introduction to Edmodo and Screencasting 101, among many others. It was a very productive and educational day for all.
A big Thank You to Turkey Hill, who provides rewards that Shallow Brook students can earn by displaying excellent behavior while waiting for their bus to arrive in the afternoon. Pictured are Hannah Spence, Carolyn Posphical, Alejandra Esteban- Elias, and Brianna Prendergast from Shallow Brook's bus 23. Each of these ladies are always kind, respectful, and mannerly! The Shallow Brook Drama Club performed their first dinner theater production Death by Dessert. There were approximately 100 people in attendance. The cast and crew consisted of 25 students in grades 4-6. The crew was responsible for painting the set as well as designing the costumes and make-up. The students also helped to serve the meal which consisted of salad, choice of pasta, breadsticks, beverage, and of course. dessert. A DVD of the performance will soon be available for purchase. Many thanks to MISS NAGLE for putting together such a fantastic show!!
The National Aquarium in Baltimore presented an Ocean Themed Day for students at SBI for the Accelerated Reader reward! SBI 6 th Grade Celebrates Youth Art Month 6 th Grade students at SBI are celebrating Youth Art Month by creating a permanent installation piece for their building. The artwork is based off the history of Friendship Quilts. Students learned that during the Westward Expansion many friends and families moved westward in hopes of land ownership and a better life. Not knowing if they were ever going to see each other again, loved ones would decorate squares of fabric and piece them together to make a beautiful quilt. SBI students are putting a wire twist on the tradition. After learning about the characteristics of the wire medium such as being measured in gauges and the importance of using annealed wire for their armature, each student decorated his or her square in as a remembrance of each student as they broaden their horizons and move on to Middle School. Upon completion these squares will be joined to make a beautiful installation piece that will be on display in the Art Lobby of SBI.
Teamwork at it s Best A class at York Haven's Elementary had a chance to work on an Easter project with the Head Start program at the school. The older kids had a chance to be mentors for the younger students to help guide them in the steps of the project. More High School Happenings Last weekend, eight of our students represented NHS in the York College of Pennsylvania High School Model United Nations Conference. We are excited to announce that three of them won Best Delegate awards from their committees (there were only five committees)! This also means that our Bobcats took home more awards than any other school present at the conference! Congratulations to the winners: Riley Cagle, Destiny Eisenhour, and Lindsay Myers! We are proud of their success! Northeastern Winter Guard has had great success at their competition at Red Land HS last week. The middle school guard and high school guard each won their divisions and took home first place. Winter Guard is competing in the Keystone Indoor Drill Association (KIDA) Championship this weekend. We wish them continued success!!
English teacher and yearbook advisor Ms. Beth Ann Brown was invited by the Columbia Scholastic Press Association to present and evaluate yearbooks at its annual spring convention held on the campus of Columbia University from March Ms. Brown's presentation focused on how to successfully complete a chronological yearbook, including how to organize work flow, content management, and staff. 2,691 delegates representing 299 schools and organizations in 34 states, the District of Columbia, Canada and Mexico attended the convention. Congratulations Ms. Brown! Dr. Eric Bierker, NHS counselor, was featured on WITF radio show, Smart Talk, on March 23. Dr. Bierker and other experts discussed the role of school counselors and post-secondary options for students. You can hear the show through this link On March 21, two of our boys basketball players also played in the York-Adams All-Star basketball game, held at Dover High School. Congratulations to Derek Hoffman and Michael Coleman who were the Bobcat representatives on the boys side.
