1 Doddridge County High School October 2018 THE BARK MONTHLY Barking News It s almost homecoming season! Doddridge County s 2018 homecoming theme is Vegas-themed. DCHS will be bringing Vegas to them this year. Before you bring out the pretty dresses and dress clothes, make sure you grab your spirit week attire. Spirit week take place the week of homecoming, so during October 1 st 6 th make sure your spirit is out and ready! Monday: Grab your favorite college or professional team gear! Spirit Week By: Jordan Vidal Tuesday: Find your long-lost twin or bring out the fame and dress as your favorite celebrity! Wednesday: If you feel as if you were born in the wrong era, take a blast from the past! If going back in time isn t your thing, get out your cape and dress up as your favorite superhero. Thursday: Now that the fall weather is rolling in, the warm, beachy weather is being missed! Dig out your summer attire one last time for this day! If you re excited for this weather and just want hunting season to come about, today gives you a reason to dig out all your camo attire! Friday: IT S GAME DAY! Show off your bulldog pride by wearing your class color.

2 Homecoming Football Game By: Ian Blankenship The homecoming football game is scheduled on October 5th at 7PM, so come and support the bulldog football team! On October 6th, come on out to the homecoming dance at DCHS. Don t forget about the homecoming parade on October 5th at 5:30PM featuring the DCHS cheerleaders, band, homecoming princesses, queen, and their escorts. Who wouldn t want to go? It s free candy and free family fun right before the football game. So come out and support the bulldogs and enjoy the free candy from the parade. It will be a great time! 3 Halloween All Around The World! By: Andrew Ash America is not the only country to have holidays like Halloween around the end of October. In Mexico, Día de los Muertos, also known as Day of the Dead is a joyous Mexican holiday celebrating ancestors and family members who have died. It is on November 1st and 2nd. They set shrines and have parades all over Mexico. People believe that on Día de los Muertos their ancestors can cross over from the Land of the Dead and be with them. In Nepal, people celebrate a holiday called Gai Jatra, also known as The Festival of Cows. This holiday celebrates loved ones who passed away that year. Families who have lost a relative must take part in a procession through Kathmandu leading a cow or a young boy dressed as a cow. They believe the cow will help guide the spirit of their loved one into heaven. Ireland is believed to be where Halloween first originated. Today, it is one of the biggest holidays in the Republic of Ireland as well as Northern Ireland. In Londonderry, Europe s biggest Halloween festival is held, known as the Banks of Foyle. This festival includes everything from a grand parade to a huge interactive haunted house. The Hungry Ghost Festival is celebrated in Hong Kong and China. Hungry Ghost Festival includes festivities such as parades, operas, burning incense, food for the dead and operatic performances to entertain the spirits. Pchum Ben is a 15-week-long religious festival celebrated in Cambodia. People celebrate by lighting candles for their ancestors, feasting with their families, and participating in buffalo races. 4 Wild & Wonderful for Sure: WV Urban Legends By: Grace Burgreen West Virginia is known as one of the most haunted states in the country due to all of its legends. To add to the spooky Halloween theme of October, here are some goose bump rising, spine startling stories that our truly Wild and Wonderful state has to offer. It is imperative to start off with well known Moth Man. It is convincing that most West Virginian s have already heard the name before. The story itself originated from Mason County. A man snapped a photo of the unknown creature. Moth Man has its own movie as well. The whole, stare into the red eyes and you ll be killed, scare that led many to listen to the warning. Just next time you re driving or out and about at night, make sure those red lights in the distance are just from a car braking, not a giant moth. Screaming Jenny is a story that still has people wondering if it s an urban legend or a true tale. Screaming Jenny is a story about how a poor girl lived in a shed near a set of railroad tracks. Barely able to afford food, Jenny sat near her fire on a cold winter night. As she was stirring what she had boiled in her pot, a spark flew up and caught her ablaze. She ran out of the shed and onto the tracks. A train hit her and all anyone could hear were her screams. To this day on the anniversary of her death, engineers still claim to see a ball of fire run across their path but as they get closer to a halt, she s gone. Last but not least is the Legend of the Trans Allegheny Lunatic Asylum. The building itself sends chills throughout people. The building was constructed in 1858, yet halted to a stop in 1861 because of the Civil War. The whole building was supposed to only contain a minimum of 250 patients. About 2,400 people were kept in the facility. Over crowded, it was said by many that the place was almost suffocating. Within those walls, no one really knew what was happening. Little did they know that innocent people were killed day after day either by disease or accidental ways. Now if you visit during a tour, you could potentially still hear coughing, or footsteps from empty rooms. Urban Legends Online

A cereal box Cardboard tube Gold spray paint And you re golden! Now, all you need is an old dress and attach the piece on! Be a terrifying doll in no time! TEACHER SECRETS By : Jenna Childers As you may know, teachers in this school don t tell us everything. Some don t tell students because it is secret or just plain out weird. Well, I have asked six different teachers what most students do not know about them, or if they had anything they desperately wanted to spill. The first teacher I asked was Mrs. Kimball, the civics and psychology teacher. She told me that her daughter is having a sweet baby boy. Her baby is due in December of this year. After talking a bit with Mrs. Kimball, I went to the office to talk to Mrs. Towner. She has many feats that students may not know about her. Towner plays on a women s softball team right here in Doddridge County. She not only plays softball but coaches the Middle School Softball team as well as the Volleyball team. She has her green belt in karate. Mrs. Towner spent 4 years in Japan and toured the Far East playing softball. Mr. Hilvers, who teaches biology and college Bio, has some weird attributes most lower-classman would never guess a teacher would have. He went to school with Channing Tatum. He LOVES to grow flowers and has five beautiful children. The weirdest thing about him is that he has webbed toes. Yes! WEBBED TOES! Bobby Burnside, now with blonde hair, has been skydiving. He has his master's degree in communication studies. He was a college pole vaulter, just as his son, Reese, is now! Mr. Coffman, the freshman World Studies teacher, spent three years in North Central Regional Jail... he worked there. He loves Star Trek and swears it is better than Star Wars. Captain Kirk is his hero. When asked if he has any special comments he said, Monty Python Rules!! Finally, we have Mrs. Nutter, my newspaper teacher. She has two kids, Makenzi and Bradley. She is a dance mom, who runs her daughter to and from dance practices and competitions.

6 Boys Cross Country By: Ian Blankenship The DCHS cross country team had an amazing meet September 4th pulling through and getting their first win of the season at Tyler Co. High School. The guys team has a total of 14 people and at the meet there was a total 70 runners. In the lead was sophomore Carter Lipscomb with a time of 18: In 2nd was Freshman Trent Gola, and in 3rd was Junior Gage Smith. Taking up 8th place was Senior Cole Garvin. The team finished having an impressive 4 runners in the top 10. Senior Ian Blankenship finished in 24th helping the Bulldogs secure a victory over Ritchie County. 7 Girls Cross Country The DCHS girls team achieved a 2nd place finish all together, and had 3 girls in top 10. Winning first overall was Senior Desirae Schoonover with a time of 23: Behind her by two places was Sophomore Jaklin Schoonover in 3rd place, and to finish out our girls in top 10 was Freshman Gabby Gogan in 10th place.
