1 Poudre Community Academy MAY 2016 Principal s Message Dear PCA Community, PAGE 1 We made it! As you read this we will be less than 2 weeks away from the end of the year and what a year it has been. We had our largest graduating class of 33 this year. It is an exciting time for these young people who will now move on to the next chapter in their life. We wish them all the best. We are also getting ready for next year. We already had our first orientation, accepted a large group of students, and we are already at capacity for the new year. So it is even more important that if a student is choosing to not return next year they will need to let us know as soon as possible so that we can move their information to their new school and make room for other new students. This also means that their seat may not be available in the future if things don t work out at another school. If you have question about this process please contact me. Next year we will have a new registration process for ALL students, new and returning. All students and a parent will have to come in to complete our required paperwork prior to starting classes. We will send out information about available times for this or you can plan on coming on the first morning of school on August 17 th. This process will be quick and will include completing all required forms, picking up your schedule, planner, and backpack if you need one. You can also check our website for information this summer and I will send out a phone call as we approach the start of the year. As always please remember that we must work as a community for the success of all of our students. Please contact me with any questions or concerns. 2 PAGE 2 PCA Wish List At PCA we do not issue supply lists for school or charge any fees. We will continue that policy but we also have a need for some items that would help around the school. We are asking for donations of the following items: Composition notebooks Spiral notebooks Reams of white copy paper Hand Sanitizer and Kleenex Any items that can be donated would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!!! Attendance Please remember that we have a new attendance policy this year at PCA. It is very important that all absences be communicated with the front office. You can contact Melissa Sugar at or Joani at if your child is going to be absent. All absences must be excused within 48 hours. Unexcused absences can cause your child to be removed from the day program and placed in credit recovery. Please refer to the attendance policy in this newsletter or the student handbook found on our new website or your student s planer. Please work with us to improve attendance. 4 PAGE 4 Strawberry Salad with Poppy Seed Dressing Add this refreshing, colorful strawberry salad to your next dinner party menu. The recipe is a nice contrast to any number of entrées and side dishes. Yield: 6 servings (serving size: 1 1/2 cups Ingredients 3 tablespoons sugar 3 tablespoons light mayonnaise 2 tablespoons fat-free milk 1 tablespoon poppy seeds 1 tablespoon white wine vinegar 1 (10-ounce) bag romaine lettuce 1 cup sliced strawberries 2 tablespoons slivered almonds, toasted Preparation Combine first 5 ingredients in a small bowl, stirring with a whisk. Place lettuce in a large bowl; add strawberries and almonds, tossing to combine. Divide salad evenly among 6 plates. Drizzle 1 tablespoon dressing over each serving. Memorial Day By:Jessica Ducett Memorial Day is a day to remember the ones we lost in the military. Memorial Day is May 30th, and it is a great day to go camping or spend the day outside with family. However, it is also a day to remember the people who risked their lives to keep us safe, some who sadly are no longer with us. This is a very sentimental and important holiday and deserves recognition from everyone in the country.

5 PAGE 5 American Food By: Marissa Borrego Summer is coming and the food is getting better! There are so many restaurants to go to like Austin s American Grill, Avogadro s Number, Big Al s Burgers and Dogs, Fat Shack, Culver s, Stuft, and many more wonderful American food! Fort Collins is full of American style food restaurants. Some facts about American Food are that, first of all, in Colorado, the cookout favorite is the cheeseburger. Drive-in owner Louis E. Ballast trademarked the cheeseburger on March 5, He never formally enforced his trademark as the Humpty Dumpty barrel restaurant, where the cheeseburger was created. Other states have many specialties too. In Hawaii, they are the only one in the U.S. state to grow coffee beans. The Kona region of the Big Island is home to coffee farms alone and produces 3 million pounds of coffee each year. In Texas, they produce ⅓ of all the tortillas in the United States and finally, in Indiana, the Hoosier State, one of the country s biggest corn producers is found, harvesting over 1 billion bushels in The state takes great pride in its kernel production and even has a town named Popcorn. American Foods fall into six categories, Native Foods, Hybrid Dishes, Ethnic Blends, Regional Specialties, Generic Traditions (including food fads), and Manufactured Goods. Each of them is equally tasty. Now for the history behind American food... In 1899, Oysters Rockefeller (baked oysters topped with savory shredded greens) were invented by Jules Alciatore of Antoine s Restaurants in New Orleans, and it reached its zenith in the early 1900 s. Because of its rich ingredients, Alciatore chose John D. Rockefeller, one of the wealthiest men in the nation to name the full dish after. Then, introduced in 1953 by Swanson, 98-cent TV dinners were ultimate time and energy savers of the modern kitchen. In the decade of , Julia Child was without a doubt the quintessential dish. In the present time, foods such as Twinkies, fried chicken and barbecued ribs are what seem to be most popular.

6 PAGE 6 Student Opinions By: Angelica Sanchez For the last student opinion of the year, I questioned Cierra Rose, Austin O Keefe, Tre Reyes, and Alexis Flink to see how they feel about the upcoming summertime. Here are the following questions. Are you going to miss school? C. NO! AO. Never in my lifetime. T. Yeah I guess. AF. Nope! What was your favorite thing about school? C. Nothing. AO. The bell at the end of the day. T. The learning opportunities. AF. The connection we all had. Using a percentage, how much are you looking forward to summer? C. Like 94% AO. 420% T. About 90% AF. 87% What do you like most about the summer and break? C. Not having to wake up early. AO. Partying harder than Snoop Dogg and Wiz Khalifa in the same dorm. T. I guess getting to do whatever you want. AF. Swimming, for sure. What are your plans for summer? C. Staying out with friends. AO. Netflix and chill with my dog. T. Having fun and working out. AF. Working and spending time with my family. Continued

Watching someone get hit by a car because I ve never seen that happen before. T. Last summer because I got to shoot a couple guns. AF. Going to Disneyland. Do you have any goals you want to accomplish before break ends? C. Get a job and my license. AO. Get money and buy a Gucci. Dream big. T. Wake up early on a daily basis. AF. Make a ton of new friends. How long do you wish summer lasted? C. A year like as long as school is. AO. A solid lifetime. T. All year. AF. The same it already is. What's your favorite thing to eat in summer? C. Ice cream. AO. A choco taco. T. Steaks and just all barbecue food. AF. Smoked salmon. If you could go anywhere, where would it be? C. 8 PAGE 8 Sports: May By: Elias Bencomo In Football: The NFL draft took place recently, and over 200 players were drafted. Players from all over the country applied for the draft, but only a handful of those were actually drafted. There were some slight troubles, as a player or two were, by being exposed on social media, hurting their likeliness of being drafted at all. All in all, the NFL draft was highly successful and anyone who didn t get drafted is encouraged to apply again next year. In Baseball: The Rockies are just about breaking even, having a record of 4-3. Their starting list consists of most considered to be not fresh as a majority of their players play a lot and don't really get new people to cover them. At the last Rockies vs. Padres game, Chatwood, the pitcher for the Rockies, had a near shut down on his pitches, only three hits off of his eight innings. The other pitcher, Cesar Vargas, was almost his equal, allowing one run off four hits. In Basketball: Kobe Bryant, recently retired, has announced that he will create a short film. Based on his farewell quote, the film will involve Glen Keane (The Little Mermaid, Aladdin). The film will be sponsored by Sports Illustrated, Believe Entertainment Group, and Bryant's new production studio: Kobe Studios. It will appear on the Sports Illustrated website! Gaming news By Alexis Flink Here we are again, sitting ducks, waiting for a good game. I want to buy a PS4, but geez, $300 for a used one? Best Buy, what is wrong with you? There is no new update on Rocket League, you know why? Because Sony will not do anything. I mean, am I right? I just Googled Xbox and you know what came up? They are talking about a white Xbox. Really? Just color. No games. No new updates. Just about the new iron-man-looking Xbox all pearly and white. No new news on Nintendo; Nothing fun on PC. Where is a gaming god when you need him?! Gamers are sick of waiting. Call of Duty: MW Want news on a game that came out in 2007? Yes, it s confirmed that they are re-mastering Modern Warfare. But, like any COD game, there is a downside. The only way you can get it is if you buy Call of Duty: Infinity Warfare. Good side is, it s two games in one...right?

9 PAGE 9 Interview of Joani By: Alberto Jimenez This month we decided to interview our PCA office manager, Joani. Joani had her first crush when she was in the third grade; her crushes name was Cameron Smith. They still talk to this day only god knows about what, but they are friends and have been for a while. She started working here because she has been through what most students have in this school and she likes to help us out. She likes to go do outdoorsy stuff on her free time, mostly fishing. She plays softball and basketball for sports, but only here and there. She has 2 kids that I don't know the age of since I didn't ask, because apparently it's rude to ask the age of people. The type of music she listens to is metal and country. When she retires she wants to buy a house on the beach where she can enjoy margaritas and the view of the ocean. The friends she has are all guys and they do guy stuff. The first job she had was mickey d s and she hated it with all her heart.
