The Concert and Symphonic Band travelled to UW-River Falls and heard a coffee concert featuring quarter tone music presented by a professional saxophonist from the Netherlands very interesting. That was followed by extensive clinics by UW River Falls music professor, Kristin Tjornehoj. The day was capped off by a visit to Action City in Eau Claire where students enjoyed competing with each other in various games. The Wind Ensemble traveled to the St. Charles and Evanston, Illinois area. We heard a wonderful band at Neuqua Valley HS in Naperville, Illinois. The Wind Ensemble was also instructed by the Neuqua Valley Wind Ensemble conductor, Charles Staley, who did a fantastic clinic with the band. We also heard their Wind Ensemble play as well. The band next traveled to St. Charles East HS where Mr. Kull, director of bands at St. Charles, gave us insight on the Japanese techniques to teaching a learning music. The trip concluded with a concert by the Northwestern University Symphonic Band and a clinic by Northwestern band director, Dan Farris, the next day at Northwestern. It was a great tour and the students represented us in a very positive way. Thank you for all you do, batten down the hatches, here we go!!! 4 April 2015 Volume 43 Issue 6 Prairie View Band Room Banter Encourage your musician to practice every day. We like to tell them to practice every day they eat. It s also critical that students set goals for every practice session and have a long term set of goals in mind. Growth happens every time they sit down to play. Ask them to share with you their goals for the day, week and month. Listen to them play often and offer whatever encouragement you can! It means the world to them to have a parent recognize their hard work! We have several performances scheduled and other events in the next month or so. Here is the "short" list! Band O Rama Looking forward to another fun evening with our entire band program on April 13 th at the high school! This evening is an overview of all that is band in Sun Prairie and a favorite for students every year! 7 th grade Band will going to Creekside, Westside and Horizon on Friday, April 10 th. The students are looking forward to showing their elementary schools how far they have come in the last 2 years! They also grow as they are responsible for set up and tear down at each school. They need to get ready to play with little direction and cleanup must happen in much the same way. Everyone grows up a little on the tour. Our final concert of the school year is Tuesday, May 12 th. We will begin the 6 th grade portion of the concert at 6:30 pm (warming up at 6:15) and 7 th grade will be playing at 7:30pm (warming up at 6:45). It s a great way to cap off the school year! We will be rehearsing for the Memorial Day parade on Saturday, May 16 th from 9-noon at the high school. Students from the Sound of Sun Prairie will be there to march side by side with our 6 th and 7 th graders that are marching in the parade. We need to know if your child will not be marching in the parade ASAP! Please one of us with that information. The Memorial Day Parade is Monday, May 25 th. We will be meeting at CHUM by 9:30 for a 10am step off. Start doing the good weather dance now! We want to honor our vets by marching!! Keep practicing and check that lesson schedule every week! 8 April 2015 Check Off Responsibilities As we get closer to the summer, individual student goals become more pressing. Each week members have one part of their show, parade, or fundamentals routine to show they have it accurately memorized and performed. We suggest they find practice buddies (and meet some new folks!) to work on this task, physical conditioning, or anything else SOSP related. Working together is always more fun and hopefully productive! If students get behind on their responsibilities, we may ask them to come early or stay during lunch to get caught up. Staff members associated with each section will make these arrangements with students. 9 April 2015 Band Boosters and the Bernie Powers Band Foundation Meet Thank you to everyone who showed up for the Band Booster Meeting on March 23 rd. Even if you showed up for only part of the meeting your involvement is recognized and appreciated. Important topics are covered at the meetings so please try to attend. One of the agenda items covered at the March meeting was the joint meeting between the Band Booster Executive Board and the Bernie Powers Band Foundation Board. At this meeting both of the organizations shared accomplishments from this year and goals for the next year. The Bernie Powers Band Foundation (BPBF) is a separate nonprofit, 501(c) 3 organization dedicated to ensuring the long-term success of band music education in the Sun Prairie Area School District. The Foundation aspires to encourage private donations and bequests that will be used for special programs and scholarship needs that go beyond the normal operating expenses of the Band Booster organization. The goals of the Foundation are: To raise $250,000 for a principal endowment fund to support, sustain and grow the foundation. It will provide long term funding and stability to support the programs supported by BPBF. This fund would provide for the Sun Prairie Band Program if the need arises. To support Music Mentors which will provide the fundamentals of music instruction to all of the students in our band program, at the discretion of the band directors. This offers an additional layer of intensive music education for students whom band directors feel need it the most. Music Scholarships Music Advocacy. To foster greater support for music education in the broader community, the Music Advocacy program will create a network of willing advocates to promote, support, educate and inform the public on the values of a music education. For more information, please visit the BPBF website at Sun Prairie Band Boosters 9 Play from your Heart
