1 POLYNESIAN DAYS TAHITIAN SOLO COMPETITION Iaorana Welcome to the first annual Tahitian Taurua O Maohi competition. Our goal this year is to establish a fruitful gathering where people of all cultures might assemble and partake of the Polynesian spirit. The name Taurua O Maohi was given to Aunty Dofi by grandmaster of Tahitian cultural arts, Papi Terepai ia. It means the gathering. We are blessed to start something wonderful that will help to perpetuate culture, education, and opportunity for the Polynesian people. In this portion of events you will find the rules and regulations pertaining to the Tahitian solo competition. Due to this being the first year we would like to keep the competition simple, but yet give Utah a taste of what competitions are coming, and what to look for as you prepare to compete all around the world. Please take the time to read and sign the necessary paper work. This will help the process run smoothly. This Tahitian solo competition is open to all dance groups and independent dancers 2. Soloist must compete in their age groups 3. Each soloist must provide and complete the following forms 4. Each soloist will be assigned a number and to be picked up an hour prior to competition time. 5. Each soloist must check in by 12:30 PM on Saturday, September 5, There will be no refunds, transfers and/or changes to registration once it is received and processed. Costumes a. All contestants must wear a plain pareo 1-2 inches above the knee. 3 inches above the knee will constitute in.5 points deductions b. For this first year contestants may wear adornments that are NOT natural. That means individual contestants may wear plastic, and silk- adornments for the head and neck pieces. c. Vanine: No hip, ankles or handheld adornments allowed. A 5 point deduction will be applied to your score. Tane: may wear leg adornments, head and neck. Make sure that the tane s pareo is tied in a male fashion. d. All contestants must compete in their individual categories e. All contestants must dance to the time allotted and follow the process. Failure to do so could cause a dancer to be terminated.

3 POLYNESIAN DAYS TAHITIAN SOLO COMPETITION Optional: If you would like natural adornments made and ordered you must contact our staff immediately, Patricia 808-???-???? to design your adornments allowed for competition. Elimination Process First Round: a. Dancers will be called by category in increments of 5 or less at a time. You must be prepared as an events coordinator will call you randomly to line- up and take your place on stage. Final Round Applies to all categories a. At the end of each category the numbers of the individuals participating in the final round will be called. At that time the information and time of the final round will be announced and you will be allowed to make preparations. b. Failure to show up for the round will also cause you to loose your opportunity in competing for 1 st, 2 nd, and 3 rd places. Drumming & Time Limit 1. There will be house drumming provided 2. Drummers will play a set from minutes of which dancers will have an opportunity to fully display their skills and knowledge of Tahitian dance SCORING CRITERIA 1. Quality (25 Points) Tahitian dance is most beautifully danced when the quality of the dance is displayed in a sense where the audience is connected with the dancers. The dancers must be able to showcase beautiful dance art work to its fullest to capture not only the audiences, but the judges as well. 2. Choreography (25 pts) In recent years Tahitian dance has been modified through many modern and creative movements. It is important to continue maintain the beauty of Tahitian dance while also appreciating the art. 3. Creativity (25 pts) Dancers must try to keep the authenticity of Tahitian dance at all times, with a boldness to create original choreograph movements that would give the judges reason to give you the highest points. 4. Knowledge (25 pts)

A Tahitian professional instructor will be provided to coach. Professional Courtesy & Time: Please be on time. The Polynesian Days Staff will be working around the clock to ensure safety precautions are taken, and that moving each event is done in a timely manner. Our goal is make this event one that will keep improving and where people from all cultures will come to know our Polynesian spirit through sharing, caring and teaching one another. If you should have any questions or concerns please direct them to our command center Blue Koa Hut centered in the middle of the park.
