1 Happy New Year! I want to wish all of our families a happy, healthy, and productive Hopefully you are able to take some time during the holiday break to celebrate with your family and friends. As superintendent of the Oldham-Ramona School District, I would like to thank the students, staff, parents and citizens of the Oldham-Ramona School District for all you do for the students and the school. I truly feel blessed to have the opportunity to work with and for such wonderful people. With all of the effort and support provided by each of you, I am certain that we will have a successful second half of the school year. 2ND SEMESTER: As we transition into 2019, we also transition into the second semester of the school year. Once all grades have been inputted into the system and double checked, report cards will be printed and mailed home. Please watch for your student s report cards in the mail during the week of January 7 th. Please take the time to not only look over your child s report card but also take some time to discuss their grades with them. Don t interrogate your child, but do take the time to communicate with them and gain an understanding of how the first half of the school year is going for them. The second semester represents a new beginning. Some JH/HS students will have a new class or two and grades will reset. Students need to remember that the key is to not give up and continue to work on doing their best. Positive encouragement from home is extremely important in helping student success. INFINITE CAMPUS MESSENGER: Fortunately, we were able to make it through the first semester of the school year without having to use the Infinite Campus Messenger system to announce either a late start, early dismissal, or a missed day due to the weather. In an ideal world, we would be able to make it through the second semester exactly the same. However, I think that I am being realistic when I say that it is unlikely that this is going to happen. By default, these messages are designed to be sent through and by voice over both landlines and cell phones. The message can also be sent via text message if it is set up properly. Please take some time to go into the Infinite Campus Parent Portal to double check the Contact Preferences to assure that you are receiving your notices through the means that best fit you. You can also update your contact information by using the Family Members tab within the Parent Portal. Please call the school office if you have any questions about getting notifications through the Infinite Campus Messenger system. LATE START REMINDERS: There are a few reminders in case we have a late start during the second semester of the school year. All late starts will be a two-hour late start. All bus routes will also be run two-hours late with the busses running where possible. Bus drivers will be contacting those families that they are not able to pick up do to road conditions. On those mornings in which we have a late start, there will be no breakfast served along with no preschool. If school is called late, there will be no morning activities. Please be safe when traveling to school every day, especially when school starts late due to weather conditions. Every Kid, Every 220 West 2nd Street, Ramona, SD Phone: (605) Fax: (605) Providing students the opportunities and facilities to become productive citizens and lifelong learners. Michael Fischer, Superintendent
2 New Year s Resolutions: It is widely believed that the first resolutions were made 4,000 years ago by the Babylonians. Their resolutions consisted of reaffirming loyalty to the King/Empire and promising their gods that they would be better people. Very few of us can probably trace our ancestry back to the Babylonians, but we can trace back cultural similarities like making resolutions. According to History.com s research, about 45% of Americans make resolutions, but only 8% are successful. Why are so few resolutions accomplished? It could be because we make unrealistic goals or it could be because our reason for doing it is not big enough. Making resolutions/goals is a great practice for parents, students, teachers, and administrators because we can all be better at what we do. Ideas for resolutions could include increasing the time that parents read to their students by 30 minutes a week, setting up a homework/reading time each night, finding a study method that works well and using it each day, practicing an instrument for an extra 30 minutes a week, finding two different ways to present material to their students, or spending an hour each week on finding ways to improve test scores. Good habits lead to more good habits. Most of these are not huge changes to our lives, but they can make a huge impact. Hopefully, we can be that 8% that are successful. ORR Basketball Season: The new year kicks off with a Girls Basketball game vs. Arlington in Rutland on January 3 with a start time of 5:00 PM for the junior high, junior varsity and varsity to follow. The Boys team will play in Oldham the following night with the same time/schedule. The Dakota Valley Conference basketball tournament will be from January Oldham-Ramona will be one of the host sites for the girls on 1/14 (Monday) and 1/17 (Thursday). The DVC finals for both of the boys and girls will be in Deubrook on January 19 (Saturday). Each team is committed to getting better and appreciates the continued support of Raider fans.
