3 Hello all. Today, I'm writing from the president's perspective as Jim has been kept really busy in his new position. Probably the most important issue facing the club at this time of year is making sure we have candidates for all officers as well as other important positions. From my experience with this club as well as others, the best way to get to know the club and the club members is by becoming an officer. According to the by-laws, there are only four elected officers: President, Vice-President, Secretary, and Treasurer. Of these four, we already have probable nominations for president, vice president, and treasurer, but are in need of a secretary for next year. The secretary's main job is to take minutes and pass them on to the newsletter chair. While the following positions are designated as appointive in the by-laws, we have in the past voted on them in November. Two directors who are former officers, C.T.C.I. Delegate, the immediate past president, Newsletter chair, a very important position that needs to be filled as Pat is retiring. Some computer skills are needed to put the newsletter together. Publicity, another job Pat has been doing that needs to be filled. While I haven't talked to Jan Peterson about it, I suspect she is ready to turn over the Giveaway, which is a great position for someone who likes to shop. A position that isn't listed in the by-laws is maintaining the website. Pat Mason has been taking on the responsibility on maintaining the website by giving updates to a service we subscribe that makes any changes for us. If someone could take this on, or even better be able to set up a website on our own without using an outside service. I almost left out Sunshine, which Shirley has been doing for a while now, but we have a possible volunteer for the position if she needs a break. I think any of our past or present officers would tell prospective officers that having a position is a winwin. You get to help the club and its members, which is a good feeling, and you get more out of the club by getting to know everyone a little better. Don Wigle for Jim Ridenour To our newest members, Dennis and Judy Murphy, 1916 Camelot Court, Modesto. Dennis and Judy own a 1957 Red Thunderbird. Home Phone: Mobile: Our club s monthly newsletter won a Gold award at the CTCI conference held in August in New Jersey. This is our editor s third consecutive Gold award. It was made possible by all the club members who consistently submit news articles and pictures each and each month. A special thanks to Elaine Rogers and Katrina Tellez for faithfully submitting pictures each month. CTCI is accepting photos of your car for the photo gallery on the home page. If you are interested in sending in a photo, please send it via to: ctcioffice@ctci.org in a jpg format. 3

4 Sciabica s tour offers a unique blend of culinary history, culture and perhaps most important, olive oil samples for a true taste of local life. The morning was bright and warm as six Thunderbirds parked and members greeted each other in anticipation of the EVOO experience. The class room style tour was led by Craig, Sciabica s Marketing Expert and olive oil connoisseur. In 1887 Nicola (Nick) Sciabica was born in Marsala, Sicily where he learned the process of making and bottling olive oil. He immigrated to America in 1911 and after eleven years of searching the USA he decided that Modesto felt most like home and is where he started his olive ranch in There have been 6 generations living on the ranch in the La Loma area and the original home is still lived in today. We sampled three classic oils, Mission, Sevillano and Arbosana varieties as well as Sciabica s own infused blends of Lemon, Basil and Garlic. We learned that imports are old and most likely blends from different countries and varieties of olives. If the oil is a product of Italy it was only bottled there, as this small country cannot produce enough to export and in fact imports much of it s oil to supplement for the large demand. First or cold press doesn t mean Extra Virgin, mechanically extracted and tastes good does; also there should be no chemicals, no heat and no defects. Shelf life depends on exposure to ultra violet light and air, the color of the glass doesn t matter. The cupboard is the best place to store your oil, never refrigerate. A bottle will last 3-6 months and a BHA free lined box 3 years. California is the only state with strict laws for making EVOO, buy your oil from a CA vendor such as Sciabica s to get the best quality, and beware of low grade oils because they burn easily. Be sure and visit the web site for the Sciabica story, learn more about the products, free recipes and so much morel After the very informative and tasty class who could resist the urge to splurge in the gift shop which offered a variety of infused oils, vinegar s, lotions, soaps and implements for your culinary delights The tour ended at Strings Restaurant where we had a wonderful time visiting and a tasty lunch. Thank you Jim and Donna Montavon for hosting this delectable day out and about with our T-Birds and friends! Katrina Tellez 4

6 Jan Peterson, Monty Montgomery, Earl Reedy DON WIGLE, VP S Thoughts.and reflections Last month I wrote about why car shows were good for the club, as far as getting our club name out there and meeting prospective members. This month is about why I enjoy them. When I first finished my car (as if it will ever be truly finished), I knew it looked ok, but never really thought of it as show quality. After attending a couple of shows, I realized that most shows are not a concourse with judges deciding between 99 and 100 point cars, but just a bunch of people who have cars they enjoy. We all have reasons for why we bought our cars, I have to admit the compliments we receive makes ownership a little better. Being at a car show just brings more compliments and allows one to share their car in a safe atmosphere. People who attend car shows aren't there to steal your radio, and if they're complimentary, they like your car and don't want to hurt it. This last idea is why my idea of a photo op for an admirer is for me to take their camera and get a shot of them in the car. Of course this can get carried away and end up with an infant getting posed on your hood (Jan encouraged it when a family came by taking pictures). You always get big smiles and thanks for this, of course I doubt they know that it made my day as much as it did theirs. I'll leave the don't touch signs for the trailer queens. Of course car show season isn't over yet, but of all of them, I want to put in a plug for the Del Webb Wheels of Woodbridge Show in Manteca on October 14. Earl always makes sure we're taken care of. I missed it last year because of a prior commitment, but hope to see you there this year. 6
