Stan, Joe and Leno August 2016 Men s Club Hits Monroe It was car talk all around when the ROMEOS had lunch at Pete s Garage in Monroe. The men swapped stories of first rides, working for the auto companies and even some dates that involved cars!! They were able to sit in booths that had been built from the chassis of actual cars. Lunch was delicious and filled with laughter.
2 2 Juliets at Magdellinas Phil and Ed at Pete s Garage Guy and Earl Michael and Stan Leno and Sam Staff Spotlight: Jill Harrison Jill Harrison can hardly remember her life before American House. At the time, American House was finishing doing renovations. Jill s sister was the cook and Jill was pregnant with her third child when she hired in as the first midnight staff person. When asked what she remembers about those days (or, actually, those nights) she laughingly says, Sleep deprivation. On a more serious note, she says for her, American House and family go hand-in-hand. My kids came in for every party. My son took his first step here at a Halloween party. A special memory is finding out that a resident and her grandmother had been best friends. Jill arranged a reunion, which was very memorable for all involved. Jill recalls, It made it very special knowing that while my grandmother didn t live here, her best friend did. It reminded me that every resident could be my grandparent. She says that American House is a perfect example of the seven degrees of separation between people. Everyone knows someone who knows a resident or a resident s family. We are a very family oriented community. Jill celebrates her tenth year as Executive Director this year. She became ED after only five months as the Assistant Director. When she is not at work, she enjoys time up, boating, snowmobiling and doing fun things with her three children. She is involved in several civic organizations, helping to get the word out about American House Riverview, and at the same time, ensuring that we at AH Riverview are an active part of the Downriver community. Meeting our new neighbors American House Senior Olympics will be August Participants will be going to various American House locations. We will be hosting the Wii competition on Wednesday, August 10th.
3 3 AMERICAN HOUSE SPONSORS ARTHRITIS WALK The 2016 Arthritis Walk is taking place on August 20th at Rivergate Terrace and Health Care Center, in Riverview. Last year, a record 260 participants walked. The organizers, which include AH Riverview s Executive Director, are hoping for an even bigger crowd this year. AH Riverview has a team and will be taking residents to the walk. The course includes a 1 mile course and a 3 mile course. American House residents and their families are encouraged to take part. Please consider walking, or making a donation in the office. Or both!!! There will be refreshments and sponsor exhibits. Arthritis is the term used to refer to the over 100 joint conditions that affect over 53 million adults and 300 thousand children in this country. For more information on the day itself, you may contact us. To sign up to walk, please go to and follow the links. What s New in the View The Games in Rio will pale in comparison to the American House Games planned for August. Friendly, inter-community rivalries will be the order of the day with a variety of events. AH Dearborn Heights will sponsor Softball, Bean Bag, Frisbee and Football throws on August 8th. It will be a test of brains the following day over at AH Venoy with a Trivia Challenge. On the 10th, Riverview will host the Wii Bowling Competition. The 11th will see a Photography, Crafts and Art competition. The week will end with an Awards Ceremony and ice cream social for all participants. (Note: We can use some volunteers on the 10th to assist us in hosting the Wii Bowling Competition and to help cheer on the home team. Please call Sherri to volunteer.) Resident Ed R. will continue his Music Appreciation class on Thursdays. Trips to the Farmers Market will continue, as will Friday entertainment. Friday entertainment will be replaced on August 12th by the American House Games. Homecoming Fall 2016 is in the works! In October, we will be having a Homecoming Celebration. We will be reaching out to local schools and inviting some of their student athletes into the building to talk with residents and take part in activities. We will be encouraging our residents to wear t-shirts or other gear from their alma mater if possible. If that is not possible we hope they will adopt a nearby team, perhaps a school where they have grandchildren or one of their children attended. We are asking families to help us by providing, if possible, a t-shirt or sweatshirt for a resident, that is from their school. September is back to school and stores, such as Meijer, often stock school gear. We think dressing the part will add to the fun. We hope the building will be filled with Rail Splitters, Titans, Trojans, Bears and the like. By Brian Russo Interesting Peach Facts Peaches were first discovered in China. Michigan peach crops equal $13 million annually. One medium peach is only 37 calories and is a great source of vitamins A and C, and several B vitamins. To speed up the ripening process of a peach, place it in a brown paper bag for two to three days. The peach is part of the rose family. The pit of a peach is considered poisonous. Peaches are harvested during July and August. To peel a peach, drop the peach in boiling water for one minute, then drop it in cold water. The peel will slide right off.

6 7 Summertime Sweet Eats Nothing is more satisfying on a hot summer day than a refreshing frozen snack. Here s the scoop on some popular options: Ice cream. The classic frozen treat, ice cream is made of cream, sugar and added flavors churned quickly together to create a sweet, light texture. In the U.S., ice cream must have at least 10 percent milk fat and be no more than 50 percent air. Gelato. This Italian dessert is made with whole milk without additional cream, resulting in less milk fat than regular ice cream. It s also churned more slowly, so it s denser and has a more intense flavor. Frozen custard. The extra-rich taste of custard comes from egg yolks, which help this treat stay colder longer. Like gelato, frozen custard is churned more slowly, so it s very thick and creamy. Frozen yogurt. Made with cultured milk, fro-yo is usually lower in fat and calories than ice cream. Its flavor is often described as more tart than sweet, and it has a uniquely thick texture thanks to yogurt cultures. Sherbet. With more of an icy texture than ice cream, sherbet is a low-fat dessert option. Although it contains some milk fat, most of sherbet s flavor comes from high amounts of sugar. It s often found in tart, fruity flavors like orange and lime. Sorbet. Similar to sherbet, sorbet is made of water, fruit puree or juice, and sugar, but contains no dairy ingredients, so it s very low in fat. It is constantly churned during the freezing process, creating a fine, soft texture. AND SPEAKING OF SUMMER... Some of our residents shared what they remember about summer when they were growing up: Helen R. remembers working on the family farm at Allen and Sibley. She enjoyed it. She can t remember what they did for fun, Just sit, she says. Estelle remembers Going swimming at the park...it was wonderful. We had our days and the boys had theirs. Ida lived on 3rd Street with her parents; they had all come from England. The war came and nobody went anywhere. Pat P. says, It was lots of fun. In the summer we played baseball a lot. Billie remembers playing lots of baseball, too. She was a great pitcher and catcher. She loved swimming, too, and became a lifeguard at a summer camp. Ella enjoyed the water a slightly different way, Running through the sprinkler with her brother and the neighbor kids. Ella also recalls, Dad would take us to the amusement park in Walled Lake. They packed a lot of rides into a small space. They had a wooden roller coaster. Bob W. remembers working the cotton fields in Illinois and Missouri. His wife Dorothy lived to go to visit her grandparents in the south, in Kentucky and Tennessee, and to spend the summers playing with her cousins. She loved to roller skate and ride a bicycle. She also loved the tent revivals. Bicycles were a luxury in those Depression era days. Both Dorothy and Pat remember sharing them. Leath remembers, I was so glad to be out of school. So glad!
