The beginning of a new trimester is one of my favorite times of the year. Every student is starting over and the possibilities are endless for what each student can achieve in 12 weeks. I hope each student is setting a goal to work harder and put forth more effort in the classroom and at home as we push toward summer.

In Mrs. Spencer's advanced language arts classes, students are creating movie trailers for their Holocaust novels. Other language arts classes are holding literature circles with their peers analyzing their novels. In Read 180, classes are currently writing argument essays. These essays require students to complete the various steps of the writing process to develop and enhance their writing. Currently in science, students are completing 8 lab stations. They have been working with partners and completing a packet that demonstrates the knowledge of the different stations in reference to renewable and nonrenewable resources. Next week, we will move into our writing piece on using renewable energy resources in designing a home. Odyssey of the Mind Team Members of this year's team are: Jacob Beckelheimer, Tyler Cline, Anna Tirkala, Emma Childs, Ben Braun, Joel Devadason, Luke McHale, Jacob Childs, Sean Monohan, Keegan Devore, and Logan Brinkman. Congratulations to Stuart Nicholas, who will be advancing to the state finals for Governors Cup competition. He qualified in the area of Arts and Humanities. 5 Lindsey Fox Seventh grade musician Lindsey Fox is a seventh grade percussionist who excels in music. She practices regularly and plays a wide variety of percussion instruments with great skill. Lindsey gives strong effort every day in class and quietly leads by example. She makes our band better by doing her part each day to improve her skills and contribute to an overall great sound. On Sale Now Yearbooks are on sale for $15.00 until February 28, What a wonderful way to capture Wildcat memories! Order forms can be found in Room 104. Track Practice - Practice will begin Monday March 4, 2013 after school, 2:30 pm until 3:30 pm. Once you have made the track team, you will need to pay a $30 participation fee, regardless of playing a fall or winter sport. All fees must be paid Friday March 15. Athlete of the Week Alex Morgan is an amazing athlete and is currently in the Advanced Physical Educationclass. He continually goes above and beyond in both gym class and in his sports teams. Alex is a great team player and is always willing to help others. Please congratulate Alex on this awesome accomplishment. CHEERLEADERS WIN COMPETITION

7 On Saturday February 16 Scott High School held their annual Middle School Competition for local middle school teams. Woodland Middle School did a fantastic job and placed first in the medium size division. This is a great accomplishment as this was their first time ever competing this year. The squad will be competing again at NKCCA on March 2nd at Ryle High School. Their performance time is at 10:30a.m. Come on out and support your Woodland cheerleaders

8 Band Play-A-Thon The Woodland seventh and eighth grade bands held a "Play-A- Thon" February 19 to raise money for the cost of an upcoming trip. The bands will be performing/competing on April 27 at the Kings Island Music in the Parks Festival. Using songs from their method books, the eighth grade band performed 138 songs and the seventh grade band performed 119 songs in under two hours. After that, they had an ice cream social to celebrate their hard work. All the ice cream and toppings were donated by and served by parents and siblings of the students. We are so proud of our students' hard work and so grateful for the strong parent support we have! Academic Team Wins Honor

9 . Woodland's academic team won the Katherine C. Hume award at the 2013 regional competition. Way to be kind, respectful and great sports! We are so proud of the wonderful season this group has had!

10 News from the Chorus Congratulations to the Woodland's students who performed in the Kentucky Junior High Choruses and the Kentucky Children's Chorus in Louisville in early February. They were chose by audition, which makes them among the very best singers in grades 7, 8 and 9 in the whole state! It was difficult music, but they had a great time staying with their families at the Galt House Hotel and performing in the Huge Kentucky Center for the Arts. There is nothing quite like being on stage and hearing several thousand people clapping for YOU! Congratulations!!! Singers Achieve Distinguished Ratings Woodland Chorus members received high ratings and high praise at NKU on February 23. Seventeen of our fantastic chorus students sang solos, duets and even a trio at the Vocal Solo and Ensemble Festival, an event sponsored and regulated by the Kentucky Music Educators Association. They were assessed by Dr. Grant Knox, a full time voice teacher at NKU. He was very impressed by their level of preparation as well as by their raw talent. Congratulate them when you see them!
