1 February, 2006 ESTABLISHED 1965 First Spirit to Fly in 2006 The Monthly Newsmagazine of The Spirits of St. Louis R/C Flying Club, Inc. Great Turn-out New Year s Day to fly for the New Year. Joe Stramaglia receives the honor of having the first 'unintentional' landing of the New Year, when the gyro, (so he says) in his helicopter malfunctioned. Luckily for Joe, the damage was minor. I would also like to thank Mark Livesey for brewing up a pot of his homemade chili to share with us, as well as the others who brought firewood, brownies, and hot sausage & egg sandwiches from McDonalds. Mark Twain Hobby has generously donated $10.00 gift certificates to be handed out as attendance prizes at our monthly meetings. R. J. Cambell was this month's lucky recipient. Hopefully everyone's winter projects are going well. Remember "Show & Tell 2006" is just three months away. Hope to see you there! MEETING MINUTES: January 11, 2006 By Walt Wilson The meeting was called to order at 7:00 P.M. WALT WILSON PHOTO After a mad scramble to be first, Mike Roederer was the first Spirit in the air in He flew his scratch-built Foamtana S electric powered bird. It has lights and he sometimes flies it in his neighborhood at night. Members signed in: 27 members and one new member applicant were present. Secretary's Report: Minutes were accepted as published in last month's Flight Lines. Treasurer's Report: Treasurer s report was accepted as presented. NEW YEAR S DAY FLY-IN By Walt Wilson We were blessed with unusually good weather to start the New Year and the turnout for the Spirits Annual Fly-In was great. Everthing from scale models to helicopters to small electric powered planes were flown. There was a bit of a crosswind, but temperatures were not bad if you were dressed for it and the sun popped out from time-to-time. There were only a couple of unscheduled landings and everyone seemed to have a great time. Photos start on page four. PREZ SEZ By Bill Lindewirth I would like to thank everyone who participated in this year's New Year's Day "Fly-In". By 11:00 AM the parking lot was completely filled. An estimated 50 people were in attendance and enjoying the unseasonably warm day. I would like to congratulate Mike Roederer for being the first Field Report: Pat Keebey reported that the gates are back up and must be opened toward the field, only. There are stop posts and the gate halves must be chained to them to avoid accidentally closing and, possibly, damaging a vehicle passing through. The left gate is to be opened first, chained in place, then the right gate opened and chained. There was a question about installing posts to stop the gates if swung outward. Pat will install some when the weather gets better. Safety Report: Joe Stramaglia reported that, when two channels, four numbers apart are being used by flyers standing within ten feet of each other, interference may be experienced by people on adjacent channels. For instance, recently two flyers were flying next to each other on channels 44 and 48. People on channels 42, 52, and 54 were experiencing serious interference problems. If using frequencies within ten numbers of each other numerically, always stand more than ten feet apart! (Continued on the next page) 1

2 (Continued from the previous page) Also, it is an AMA rule that you must have flags with your frequency numbers on your transmitter antenna! Do not ever fly without them! Some flyers are still flying on the pit side of the safety line! Always fly on the runway side of the safety line, which is in line with the fence in front of the pilots box! If you lose control of your plane, shout out a warning, such as I don t have it! to alert people who may be in harm s way! Year. Membership Report: At press time, 88 members have renewed for Training Report: Bob Gizzie requested that we designate four instructors and sign up with AMA for the Introductory Pilot Designation Program. This will cover potential flyers who don t have an AMA license for 30 days. The designated instructors must keep logs of student s flights to comply with the AMA. The designated Instructors are: Bob, Gene Jones, Pat Keebey, and Ralph Amelung. A motion was made and passed to apply for the program. New Member Applicant: Name Phone Number Dennis Skeeters He was accepted unanimously. Twelve members received Spirits Awards of Appreciation. They are: Les Richman, Walt Wilson, Bob Gizzie, Don Fitch, Carolyn Schlueter, Paul Geders, Pat Keebey, Lee Volmert, Ken Brock, and Gene Jones. George Kulage and Ralph Amelung were not present to accept their awards. Pat Keebey was awarded Modeler of the OLD BUSINESS: Swap Meet, March 25: Nothing new has been heard from the Boeing Club. Pat Keebey or Duane Youngman will contact the Boeing people for an update and, hopefully, a flyer for advertising. Show N Tell will be on April 22, at the Christ the King Church, on Church Street, 1/2 block north of Mexico Road, one block west of Mid-Rivers Drive, in St. Peters, Mo. It was decided that classes for judging will be Sport Scale, 2 Open, and Novice. ARF s will be awarded one prize by a vote for the best, by all attending. Surfacing of Road to Levee: Paul checked with Ford Paving and found that this is not the season for free millings. Re-paving will resume in the spring and millings will be free. If we try to get them now, we will have to pay for them. Electricity For the Field: Paul Geders and Bill Lindewirth have priced fans and electrical wiring for the pavilion. Electrical power would enable soldering, Monokote repairs, microwaving food, hot foods, lighting, fans, charging for batteries and other capabilities in our pavilion. Paul circulated a cost breakdown for the pavilion wiring and electrical components. Some people questioned the value of such an installation considering the costs. A motion was made and passed to get firm estimates for the installation of power to the pavilion and installation of wiring for the various anticipated capabilities, and monthly bills. Bill Lindewirth will get estimates. BILL LINDEWIRTH PHOTO NEW BUSINESS: Mark Twain Hobbies is donating gift cards for attendance prizes at meetings. R.J. campbell won the card this month! Thank you Dennis and Darren! Awards of Appreciation: Twelve members were awarded certificates of appreciation for their contributions to the club in See the photo for details. Meeting Activity: Paul Geders further discussed design problems and accomplishments by Boeing on the PMTD vehicle. Six members brought their planes. See the photos for details. Bob Fiely brought his new Top Cap, which he built from a Morris Hobbies kit. It s powered with an O.S..46 SF and hadn t been flown at meeting time. (Continued on the next page)

3 (Continued from the previous page) George Cooper discussed his new AK China Model Products Cessna 182 Skylane. It has a fiberglass fuselage, built up wings, and a Saito.56 for power. It weighs 6-1/2 pounds and had not been flown. R. J. Campbell discusses his new Ultra Stick ARF. It has a Saito 1.00 for power and weighs 8 pounds. It s a good flyer and the flaps are very effective in slowing down for landing. WALT WILSON PHOTOS George also brought his Corben Baby Ace built from a Joe Bridi kit. It s powered by an O.S fourstroke, is covered with Solartex, and weighs 11-1/2 pounds. It s been flown several times and he moved the wheels forward to prevent noseovers (see inset). Meeting was adjourned at 8:55 P.M. FOR SALE: Carl Goldberg Sukhoi 26, 80% completed. Covered in Solartex and ready for paint and final detailing. Powered by OS 1.08 (new and unused). Paul Geders discussed the ongoing development of Boeing s PMTD vehicle. The engine has been upgraded and work is progressing on technical aspects of the design. Paul told of a wild ride in the back of a pickup truck while trying aerial refueling. More Meeting photos are on page eight. Needs radio only. Fiberglass cowl and belly pan included! Excellent construction; ready for inspection. $450. Contact Scott or skydawgz13@yahoo.com. 3

It was returned in like new condition. They rebuilt the engine, replaced the head, piston, sleeve, ring, and O rings. Bearings were evidently OK as they didn't replace them and the engine feels smooth as silk to turn it over. I didn't send a glow plug, but they left one in it after the test run when returned. It has an "H" stamped in it and is a long plug...don't know what kind. Test run report said idle at 2300 and peak at 10,300 with 13 x 6 prop and 15% fuel. 7 Maybe the head was an assembly with the valves in it as the valve stem inside the exhaust port looks new and they did not list a replaced valve spring. This is the engine I buried in about 6 inches of dirt when the Chipmunk wing broke off and the fuselage became a lawn dart (too fast/many snap rolls). I ran it several flights after that on the New Chipmunk until the spring broke in flight. It took 5 weeks and I was not happy about that, but considering the rebuild they did, FREE under warranty, I have again become a fan of Magnum engines. Also, they quickly answered two s I sent inquiring about the engine, and apologized for the delay.

8 More January Meeting Pictures (Continued from page 3) Lee Volmert brought his AK Models P-51 Mustang. It s powered by a MVVS.40 and weighs seven pounds. The kit contained some spare parts that didn t fit properly and others that were not identifiable. The plane is well built otherwise. Don fitch brought hisbutterfly Livingroom Flyer. Advertised as the world s smallest RTF R/C plane. It comes with a very nice carrying case! CAROLYN SCHLUETER PHOTO WALT WILSON PHOTO (LEFT) BOB GIZZIE PHOTO (RIGHT) Green Machine Finds a Home By Bob Gizzie Forrest Holt s Sig LT 40 Green Machine, that he donated to the club, has found a new owner! It s Chris Hackworth, 5471 Precious Stone Ct,. St Charles, Mo, 63304, a new club member and student learning to fly. He came by my house and picked it up on Monday, December 19, He hopes to be at the field after he sends in his dues so he can fly on New Years Day! Congratulations Chris! Note that he's look- Chris Hackworth and his Green Machine. ing for an engine and radio gear as he is on a limited budget! The Last Word By Walt Wilson Plans are being finalized for this year s Show N Tell. At the meeting, a couple of people thought we should have attendee judging. Show N Tell is a contest, as much as Four-Star 40 or Warbirds Racing. The only fair way to judge the planes at Show N tell is the way it was always done, until last year. Two competent judges, who have no entries or close buddies in the event, are selected and will evaluate the planes in an un-biased manner. Sport Scale entrants must have documentation to prove that such a plane, in the color scheme presented, has existed. A three-view outline drawing must be presented and color documentation can be a two-or-three view published illustration, color photographs of the full-scale plane, or a complete documentation booklet. Sport Scale planes are to be judged from the AMA-mandated 15 feet, or as close to that as space allows. Other entries are judged for workmanship, originality, and finish. This prevents the buddy system where the entrant who has the most friends and family attending gets the most votes and wins, possibly with something other than the best plane. ARF planes may be entered, too, and one winner will be selected by popular vote of all attendees. The caterer will be the same as last year, which was excellent, and there will be munchies, soft drinks and coffee. It ll be a great event, don t miss it! We re having a good flying day every now and then. Get out if you have the opportunity, but keep building. Show N Tell will be here before you know it! That s April 22 and it s the only event dedicated to the builders in the club. The social part of it is pretty nice, too. Gotta go build! 8
