2 UBC Garba and Raas Club just recently formed to bring people together who are interested in Garba and Raas. Garba and Raas are types of folk dances that find their roots primarily in the western province of Gujarat. Traditionally, they are danced during the nine nights of Navaratri that typically occur in September or October. Garba and Raas have also evolved into a performance-oriented style of dance, in which traditional Garba and Raas sequences are combined to create a unique dance routine. Our club combines both the competitive and social aspects of traditional Garba and Raas. The mission of UBC Garba and Raas Club is to actively engage everyone, whether they have had any prior Garba and Raas experience or are completely new to this type of dance. 3 The club founded UBC s first Garba and Raas dance team, which performed throughout the Vancouver area. Our goal is to introduce Garba and Raas as a strong dance form, bringing forth memorable routines with power-packed moves, flawless coordination, beautiful costumes and intricate storylines. With work ethic and determination to complete any challenges, we work our way through long practices to become Phatakraas. In the future, the team aims to become the first Canadian competitive Garba and Raas team to participate in inter-college Raas competitions that currently take place throughout the US. We would highly value your contribution and support towards building our team, and as a sponsor you will be the driving force in attaining our dream of representing Canada at these competitions. Our Navaratri and Spring Garbas took place last year in full swing, in which attendees enjoyed a night of dancing Garba and Raas along with a scrumptious full banquet-style Indian dinner, bringing every detail of authentic and traditional Garbas to the UBC campus for the first time. The club shall continue to organize such dance functions once per semester to cultivate the interest of those who wish to experience the fast-paced, high-energy dancing of Garba and Raas in a social setting. UBC Garba and Raas club has also extended its efforts to the community by encouraging students to explore off-campus Garba and Raas functions organized by local Gujarati societies. For people new to Gujarati culture or wishing to learn Garba and Raas, dance lessons to demonstrate and teach Garba and Raas in a relaxed, informal environment are frequently held throughout the year. Through these sessions, the club has helped more people actively participate in dance functions as well as prepare them for trying out for the dance team. In our efforts to reach out to a wide variety of people and communities, we shall graciously acknowledge and honor the generosity of your sponsorship, giving us the privilege to publicize your name across a broad spectrum of students, societies and organizations.
