Treasurer Past President Rita Cassibba Laura Gilman Pending Carol Grey Linda Quattlebaum Sue Edwards Robert Adams DEADLINE: JULY NEWSLETTER JUNE 20th, 2012 jskraut@ca.rr.com President s Message: Things are busy right now as our Region gears up for the Spring Stampede. I change my hat for this event and become a worker bee and grounds manager. The Quarterly meeting was productive and many items were handled and approved. This means that events, programs and planning move ahead. We have a great camp-meeting set for the July Quarterly that many are looking forward to at the beautiful Pt. Reyes area and the fun atmosphere that takes us out of meeting rooms. I want to acknowledge the tremendous amount of work that goes on behind the scenes. The officers, chairs and representatives of both State and Region work continually to keep the programs coming to the membership of CSHA. It takes personal time, extra effort and creativity to achieve having a state CSHA President Jim Hendrickson -wide organization function and mesh activities. Please remember to check the website for Remembrances. It has been a difficult year for CSHA and we wish to acknowledge those members that have passed. 2 PAGE 2 THE NEW HORSEMA N Gone But Not Forgotten Our hearts, thoughts, and prayers go out to their families and loved ones lost. They will be missed but not forgotten. Peggy Narducci Long time CSHA member and parade rider Peggy Narducci passed away Saturday, April 21st, 2012 at the age of 95. She rode parades up until just a few years ago. Services will held at noon on May 5th at St James Church in Davis. Reception & life celebration followed in the church hall. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the CSHA Parader Grant. Peggy was born in 1916 in Uniontown Washington the oldest of 13 children. Growing up Peggy Narducci and her beloved horse Dino in one of the last parades in which they rode together. Dino passed away at the age of 30 in 2006 on Peggy s 90th birthday. through the depression taught Peggy many life skills. She married her husband Harry and had two sons. Peggy took up riding a bit later in life, at 64 actually. She was hooked on parading as was her beautiful horse Dino. They both loved to perform and be in the middle of the parade action. Peggy said Dino was more human than horse. The pair appeared in more than 550 parades over 25 years and in the Tournament of Roses parade thirteen times. Peggy will be missed by us but is most likely smiling astride her Dino for another ride. Charitable Trust CORRECTION TO THE CSHA CHARITABLE TRUST REQUEST FOR SCHOLARSHIP MONIES FORM It has come to our attention that some scholarship redemption forms may have been issued with an incorrect address for the CSHA State Office. If you have won a Horsemastership, Royalty, SOC Gymkhana, SOC Western or SOC English scholarship, please take note that your redemption form must be sent to: The California State Horsemen s Association Attn: Charitable Trust Post Office Box 1228 Clovis, CA Please note that the correct form is available on the CSHA website. We apologize for this error. State Patrol Deputy Chief John Poon "The members of the CSHA State Patrol were deeply saddened with the passing of "Deputy Chief" John Poon this March. John was a man with a kind word and smile for everyone. A man of incredible integrity and loyalty, and always an enthusiastic member of the State Patrol. John's strong sense of ethics and principles are greatly missed by all who have known him and served with him. John came to the State Patrol after retiring from the BART Police Department, and his passion and skills soon led to him to being asked to be Deputy Chief - North. John willing accepted this position and served the CSHA for nearly 9 years in his leadership capacity. Many of John's family became actively involved in the State Patrol, as Patrol Officers and volunteers. The membership of the State Patrol express their deep and sincere sympathy to the Poon family during this period of loss, and invite and encourage all members of CSHA join them and to keep John's positive contributions and memory alive within our organization."

7 July Quarterly T HE NE W HO R S E MA N PAGE 7 Lodging Near Stewart Horse Camp

8 THE NEW HORSEMA N PAGE 8 July Quarterly Continued Information on Stewart Horse Camp Stewart Horse Camp has been around a long time and is managed by the Stewart family that previously owned the land before being sold to the National Park Service. They are open from April 1st through November 1st, depending on the weather. Access is off Highway 1 approx. 5 miles south of Olema. Camping fees are CASH ONLY and are generally collected when you arrive or the next morning if you arrive later in the day. Be sure to get a map from Amanda when she collects your camping fees. PETS ARE NOT ALLOWED, YOU WILL BE ASKED TO LEAVE IF YOU BRING ONE! There are no corrals, but high-tie poles are at most sites or you can bring your own portable corrals. There is no tying to trees or any fencing. Each site has a picnic table and fire pit. Water faucets are located either in the sites or nearby, be sure to bring hoses and splitters as you will have to share faucets. The water is non-potable stock water, bring your drinking water. Fire restrictions are posted in the camp and are enforced! Rangers patrol when fire danger is high and will give tickets to those with open fires. There is a restroom building with hot showers and flush toilets, and power for those that need to plug in a hair dryer. The trails are FANTASTIC! Trails are very well marked, but recommend you do get a map so you know where you are! You can get one at the Visitors Center near Olema or from Amanda if she has any. Here's a tip... If you want to get back to the camp, just head for Five Brooks staging area. The camp is located just below the staging area. You can ride to Wildcat Beach via Stewart Trail (fire road) or up Greenpicker or other single track trails, return along the coast via Coast Trail to Old Out Trail and connect with Almeda trail for a great ride. There are hitching rails, restroom and picnic tables at Wildcat Camp and a large water trough near the camp. Or go to the Visitors Center via Rift Zone trail (approx. 5 miles). This is a beautiful easy ride, just a short bit of steep down hill at the beginning before the bridge. Horses are not allowed on Bear Valley Trail near the Visitors Center during the weekend or holidays. But you can take Horse Trail from the Visitor's Center (behind the Nat'l Park's Morgan Ranch) for a great ride, with a gradual incline up to Sky Camp where there are picnic tables, hitching rails, restrooms and water trough (look for the little "water trough" sign on the downhill side of the trail just past the large trees by the picnic area). (Don't take Mt. Wittenberg up, pretty steep!) During the week take Bear Valley Trail out to Arch Rock and back or head off on another trail. Water trough and restrooms at the visitors center. These are just a few of the trails you can take, there are miles and miles of trails, usually very well maintained. Several of the trails have had yellow jackets during the late summer months so beware. Warning signs are usually posted at the beginning of the trails impacted. Just be sure to take water, a snack and a jacket with you in case you are out longer than expected! NOTE: The Morgan Ranch is where they train the horses for use by the Nat'l Park Service. They have some nice informational displays and the rangers are always ready to talk horses! Highly recommend this for anyone that likes to trail ride!
