For anyone who missed the last meeting, Judy & Bert Hill received their lifetime memberships for all their continuous dedication to the club. Our club is fortunate to have them We also had the20 th Annual Emmet Hallet gymkhana, and several special events occurred that day. We started the day off by remembering the life of Mr. Emmet Hallett, the man whom we honor each year with this show. I m quite sure we did him proud.a special day for a special man still in many of our hearts. We had a beautiful grand entry with a single U.S. flag, carried by Tiffany Vance. Tiffany was followed by our sweethearts, Morgan Donatello and Mindy Marsden. Next, we surprised Ira Sullivan, when the sweethearts presented him with a lifetime membership for all of his dedication and hard work in the past. Ira then led us all in the National Anthem. At our lunch break, the Denim Dolls dedicated their performance to Emmet and also honored his daughter, Sue Martin. Sue received a plaque and a lifetime membership to the club. As you can probably tell, this was an emotional day.a lot of tears a lot of hugs. The Denim Dolls drill team have made great progress. I believe they have really added something special and well-received to our shows. What started out as six girls has now grown to twelve. I m very proud of how they have worked together and become a TEAM not an easy accomplishment, with all the personalities and attitudes involved. One of the parents (those important ones who are often taken for granted) gave me the perfect line; It s like herding cats. They have started practicing a new routine for their upcoming performances. Keep it up, girls. We all enjoy watching you and seeing your progress. We have the Redneck Olympics, the Trophy Show, and the Year- End Awards dinner.all coming up. So keep these in mind and on your Calendars. August 6 th is the next club meeting.hope to see ya there..lots to discuss. Your President, Jay

EBRPD OPEN SPACE BOND MEASURE EXTENSION On July 1 the East Bay Regional Park District Board of Directors took the first official step to place a proposition on the November 4 ballot to extend a bond measure passed in 1988 without raising the present property tax rates above the present rate of $10 per year, per $100,000. A final vote will occur at the board meeting on July 15. If approved by the voters, this $500 million extension will be used to continue to restore urban creeks; to protect wildlife; purchase and save open space, wetlands, and bay shoreline; and to acquire, develop and improve local and regional parks, trails, and recreational facilities. Of the $500 million, $375 million of the revenue (75%) will fund regional park acquisitions and capital projects, with $26.2 million (7%) of that amount held in reserve for unanticipated future needs and opportunities. For additional information, visit measureaa. This bond measure is especially important to Tri-Cities as it will be instrumental in gaining approval and funding for the proposed West Contra Costa arena. Please vote yes on this extension and ask your family, friends and co-workers to vote yes also! Board Votes for Extension of Regional Open Space, Wildlife, Shoreline and Parks Bond In addition, $125 million (25%) of proceeds will go to cities, special park and recreation districts, and county service areas for their park and recreation services. Livermore voters are not part of this extension tax as Murray Township was not within the Regional Park s jurisdiction in the initial bond measure. EBRPD continues to serve this community through new acquisitions of parklands. Vote YES! Vote YES on Park Bond Measure in November! June/July, 2008 Page 2

Lifetime Memberships Presented A few members have been active in the club for many years. For their years of dedication and support they have been presented with Lifetime memberships. Judy and Bert Hill were presented at the July meeting and Ira Sullivan and Susan Martin received theirs at the Emmet Hallet Gymkhana. We want to say THANK YOU! for all they have done for the club through the years August Meeting The next meeting is Wednesday, August 6th Meetings are at the Lefty Gomez Rec Hall in Rodeo. 7:00 p.m. General 7:30 p.m Don t forget! Denim Dolls Drill Team Rocks! Well, unless you ve been hiding under a rock for the past two months you probably have heard about Tri- Cities new drill team, the Denim Dolls! The team began practicing in early June and had their premier performance at the Arena Benefit Gymkhana after just 3 practices and did great! The team is now up to 12 young ladies who practice 1-2 times weekly and have performed at two of our shows and the Region show. They have been invited to other club s shows and are seriously thinking about becoming competitive! They even have a My Space, check it out at Their coaches are Caitlin and Jay Fowler. And this is not a easy task, as Brian Pepper said, it s sort of like herding cats! Special thanks go to Gina Marsden and Gina Pepper for making saddle pads and getting their outfits together and Marie Grisham for making their banner. Parents have also shown their support by taking the younger ones to practice and spending their evenings in the dust! They are looking for sponsors to help cover costs for matching tack, etc. and want to thank everyone that donated at the June 14th show, especially, the Materne family for the $100 American Express gift card donation! If you can help or know of a company that can, please let Caitlin know. June/July, 2008 Page 3

Items for Newsletter Send your articles, jokes, etc. to me to include in newsletter. Send to club at Emmet Hallet Gymkhana This year s Annual Emmet Hallet Memorial Gymkhana was very special! This was the 20th year we have held this show honoring Emmett Hallet, one of Tri-Cities founding fathers. The grand entry and opening ceremonies had folks in tears. At mid-day the Denim Dolls dedicated their ride to Emmet, following which a special presentation was made to Susan Martin honoring her many years of dedication to the club and presenting her with a life time membership. Arena Benefit Gymkhana The Arena Benefit Gymkhana on June 14th was very successful! Approximately 50 riders attended and we raised over $1, for the arena fund!! Thanks goes to all those that helped in the arena, Marie Haffner for handling the announcers booth, Gina and Jeff Marsden who did a great job with the food booth and Sharon Drake and Ira Sullivan for judging. The show helped promote the new arena and will show the Park District how serious we are about getting the arena! Champion High Point was awarded to: Div. 1 Cheyenne Sanford Div. 3 Nancy Fite Div. 4 Amanda Enzenauer Div. 5 Nicole Pepper Div. 6 Jay Fowler Div. 7 Jennifer Kennally Open Donna Kinnard Tiffany Vance on Flash June/July, 2008 Page 4

The Region 5 Gymkhana program is still going strong. Important Dates: Raffle items and $20 sponsors are DUE by September 6th. Stall deposits for the SOC are DUE August 1st. The tentative date for the SOC practice has changed. The arena was not available for Saturday Oct 4th, so we're trying for Sunday Oct. 5th. The Region 5 Gymkhana program fundraiser this year will be to sell window/trailer decals with the Region 5 logo. Look for them soon! The CSHA Gymkhana scholarship nomination forms are attached to this newsletter and it is open to all youth Region 5 Gymkhana News that are riding in Gymkhana at the SOC. Region 5 Gymkhana has provided the buckle for many years, but your child can t win it if you don't nominate him/her. This year's buckle was generously sponsored by Leap of Faith Farms in Walnut Creek! The State program is still working hard to raise money and secure sponsorships. We have decided to hold a state wide raffle (tickets will be sold through the SOC and pulled at the show!). We are working on getting the prizes but we already have a custom made beaded tack set from Luan's Leathers and a trail ride and lunch in the wine country provided by CowboyHideaway.com. Both prizes retail for over $400 each! Angela Have you paid your dues?? Tri-Cities annual membership renewals for the 2008/2009 year were due June 1st. If dues were not paid by July 1st, an additional $5.00 late fee will be charged. If not paid by August 1st members will be dropped from the membership. If you are not sure you are paid up, contact Judy Hill on ASAP! Pt. Reyes Labor Day Camp Out Tri-Cities Juniors have planned a campout out at Stewart Horse Camp at Pt. Reyes over the Labor Day weekend, Friday, Aug. 29th through Monday, Sept. 1st. If you ve never been to Pt. Reyes you are in for a treat! Some of the most beautiful riding in the United States! You can ride to the beach and see the waterfall and seals and among the ferns and pines. The camp sites are not assigned, it s first come, first served. They have fire pits and picnic tables. Some have high tie poles you can run a rope between. Otherwise you need portable corrals or electric fence. You cannot tie to trees or fences. There are flush toilets and hot showers. Pets are NOT ALLOWED, if you show up with one you will be asked to take it home. Everyone is responsible for making their own reservations and paying their own camping fees. The camping fees are: 10 & under with no horse free 11 & over with no horse $17.50/night Any rider with a horse regardless of age $17.50/night Extra horse $17.50/night There is probably a 3 day minimum over the holiday weekend. All vehicles must have reservations. Cash only the day of arrival To make reservations call Leave a message with your name, phone number, arrival & departure dates, # of people and horses in each vehicle. The number of campers has been reduced by the park district so you should make your reservations ASAP to be sure you have a spot! Maybe we can do a potluck on Saturday night? Let s talk at the August meeting. June/July, 2008 Page 5

The Empty Saddle of Old Paint I walk alone to the old corral and stand there in the dust; This ranch once made us money, but now it's just a bust. A wind comes rustlin' down, shakin' dreams out of the trees, And my memories are ridin' on that cool southwestern breeze. I place a hand on the old top rail--it's smooth now with the years; I see a gray horse tail hair, and I choke back all the tears. It's caught there on a splinter, the one rough spot on the rail, The only thing that's left of Paint--just a hair out of his tail. Address: tricitieshrsmn@hotmail.com Club Web Site: Tri-Cities My Space tricitieshorsemensassoc There's a saddle hanging rough and rotted, at the shed that sits nearby, I couldn't put it on another horse, no matter how I'd try. That saddle fit you perfectly, just like it was built there Right over the spotted pattern of your perty pinto hair. There's a trail up through the jagged pines, another on the ridge; A rough road follows the river, then crosses the old bridge. One path leads up high, into the snowy mountains, We found that path ten years ago, that led to Bear Creek's fountains. There's many trails we've ridden, friend, and I'd just like to know, Which is the one you follow, and where do you like to go. Where do you ride tonight, Old Paint? Your empty saddle's hangin' here; Are there still some trails we missed that always keep you roamin' near? I don't guess there's some cowboy's spirit a-ridin' you 'round Heaven, For no man but me could ride you, here on the old Bar Seven. And as for me, Old Paint, I spend a lot of my time hikin'; For since you left, my own two hooves are just more to my likin'. I've tried to make another friend out of a horse like you, But I just can't seem to find one that's anywhere near so true. The song says I die first, and then Paint packs me away, So tell me, friend, why you said good-bye, and I buried you that day. Denim Dolls My Space denimdolls June/July, 2008 Page 6
