Principal: Miss Langlois Vice-Principal: Miss Alexopoulos Secretary: Mrs. Harnish JMPS Home of the Jaguars Jack Miner News April 2018 The Mystery of the Missing Crown Students at Jack Miner School had the great pleasure of watching the dress rehearsal of The Mystery of the Missing Crown on March 6th. This production was a huge success. During the evening performances on March 6th and 7th, the gym was filled with audience members who were all smiles as they watched the fantastic performance put on by our students. Thank you to Ms. Collard and Mrs. Cornies who were the directors of the play. They spent many hours working with the cast both during and after school hours. This truly was an amazing performance by our students who also invested a lot of time and hard work into making this play the success that it was.

PRINCIPAL: MISS LANGLOIS JACK MINER NEWS PAGE 2 Honouring Mr. Derksen Opening Day activities were held on March 29th, in honour of Mr. Derksen and his love of baseball. Students in JK-Grade 8, participated in a fun filled day of baseball themed physical and cross-curricular activities. Before the day s events began, the school community gathered in the gym, for an Opening Day Ceremony to celebrate Mr. Derksen s life, love and passion for learning and teaching. Students from Mr. Derksen s class, sang the national anthem and shared readings, reflecting on what Mr. Derksen meant to them. As a tribute to Mr. Derksen, all staff and students placed their thumbprint on a memorial tree to show the impression he made on all of them. The student body sang Remember Me as two students from Mr. Derksen s class presented the tree. The Opening Day Ceremony concluded with Mr. Derksen s family throwing the first pitch. To join in the game, our amazing Parent Council generously funded a hot dog and bag of chips for each student to honour Mr. Derksen.

PRINCIPAL: MISS LANGLOIS JACK MINER NEWS PAGE 3 Eat Drink Dine Kingsville Luncheon As an incentive for being the top selling class for the EDDK fundraiser, Grade 8R enjoyed a luncheon from the participating businesses (Mettawas Station, Lee & Maria s, Vernons, Jacks, The Main, The Chop Shop, Butcher of Kingsville, Calabria, Merlis Eatery & Colasanti s) that was truly a feast. Some food included macaroni and cheese, pasta, pizza, broasted chicken, grilled cheese sandwiches, fries, arancini, donuts and cupcakes. We are very thankful for the generosity of local businesses. A Wrinkle In Time Field Trip As a connection to their curriculum studies in Language Arts, Grade 7 & 8 students went to see A Wrinkle in Time. In class, students were immersed in an exciting Read-a-Loud of the novel. The intermediate division used this classic novel to drive their instruction and teach the Write Traits explicitly. Four writing tasks were designed to challenge the students and gather data based on their writing skills and implementation of the seven traits. The movie not only follows Meg s journey to unlock her past and find her father, but also embraces an understanding of acceptance and being true to who you are.

PRINCIPAL: MISS LANGLOIS JACK MINER NEWS PAGE 4 Elementary Out of District Applications Elementary Out of District Applications must be received by the Principal of the receiving school by May 1 st for September of the same year. This deadline is strictly enforced. If you are considering an application for your child(ren) to attend a school as out of district student(s) for the school year, please ensure that your application is completed and submitted to the principal by May 1, A sibling of a student who has already been approved to attend an out of district school must apply in the usual manner with no guarantee of acceptance. Please understand that applying for Out of District at any time may be denied based on open vs. closed boundary schools, potential Program and Accommodation Reviews, boundary studies, or capacity challenges, etc. Completion of the form does not guarantee placement at a requested out of district school. The Superintendent responsible for Accommodations makes the final decision and you will be officially advised, by letter, whether or not the application is approved. Chess Club News 18 students were chosen, of our 40 member Chess Club, to participate in the chess club competition on February 28th. 5 PRINCIPAL: MISS JACK MINER NEWS PAGE 5 News From the ECO Club Earth Day this year is April 22. In an effort to make a difference, during the month of April, the Eco Club is asking students and staff to challenge themselves with Wasteless Wednesdays. This means bringing a waste free lunch every Wednesday. The ECO Club appreciates your support in our efforts to reduce our school's waste. Together, we can make a difference! Tips for Building a Wasteless Lunch : use plastic containers that can be washed and re-used bring drinks in reusable water bottles pack items that can be recycled instead of thrown away pack a variety of "wrapper free" snacks such as fruits and veggies avoid items such as plastic straws and sandwich bags that cannot be recycled Seuss Week In celebration of Dr. Seuss birthday (which was on March 2nd), Grade 1 s and our Early Years students participated in a variety of Seuss themed literacy, numeracy and art activities throughout the week. As a school, we joined them in participating in some of the fun activities they had planned such as dressing up as your favourite Seuss character, wearing your favourite hat in honour of The Cat in the Hat, and wearing comfy pyjamas to end the week.

PRINCIPAL: MISS LANGLOIS JACK MINER NEWS PAGE 6 Scent Aware Environment Please be aware that all GECDSB schools are scent aware. This means that we are asking students and all visitors to the school to help us create a healthy environment, by limiting or avoiding the use of scented products such as perfume, aftershave, cologne, and essential oils. Scents from these products affect the health and well-being of other people in the building. The goal is to prevent harm to others. Let s work together to limit the use of scented products. Reaching Ahead Summer Learning Program This summer, the Greater Essex County District School Board will be offering a full-credit course for students who are entering Grade 9 in September. A flyer with more detailed information will be sent home to Grade 8 parents. Date: July 4 th - 27 th Time: 8:30 am to 12:30 pm +2 hours online each day The Grade 6 Drumming Team practicing during the Fitness Break, under the guidance of Mrs. Armstrong, Mrs. Fleming and Mr. Marentette Parent Council News Parent Council is a large group of passionate parents who meet monthly to discuss ways we can support our children s education at Jack Miner. This past month we asked the question, "How can we use the fundraiser dollars to tangibly support each of the teachers with their unique classroom needs?" Further discussion with teachers will help us decide how to allocate budgeted dollars. Thank you for your continued support of our food days and fundraising events. Recently, new books were purchased for Grades 1-3 to support the book in a bag program. Thank you to Miss Hostine who is working on labeling and leveling these books to prepare them for circulation. Parent Council also had the great honour and priviledge to support the Opening Day tribute to Mr. Deksen by providing hot dogs and a bag of chips for each student. All parents are always welcome at our monthly meetings! The next meeting will be held on April 10th, at 6:00 pm in the library.

PRINCIPAL: MISS LANGLOIS JACK MINER NEWS PAGE 7 AM 800 Class of the Week Grade 8R was nominated and won the AM 800 class of the week contest. As a result, they enjoyed their SUNSET produce breakfast (an egg & cheese wrap with salsa, cut up veggies, and strawberry cinnamon muffins) and backpacks from Monarch Basics. Badminton season has begun! The coaches, Mrs. MacTavish and Mr. Ligotino, would like to thank the 70+ students who tried out for the team. The Jack Miner Jaguars will be well represented by Owen, Ethan, Liam, Nicole, Kaitlyn, Teagan, Lisa, Madeline, Kady, Andrew, Claudia, Molly, Matteo, Brady, Hadon, Joel, Julian and Alexis.
