2 Andy Emery, firefighter from Lancaster Fire Department and Hagansport Volunteer Fire Department, presented a program to grades Pre-K through 2nd this week. Mr. Emery put on all his gear and showed the student what he looks like when he rescues someone from a burning building. When he put on his mask, he let the children hear how he sounded like Darth Vader. He wanted to be sure that students knew not to fear the firemen even though they can look and even sound a little bit scary when they have on all of their gear. Mr. Emery is the husband of Mrs. Emery, our 2nd grade teacher. Page 2

3 Community Welcome Firefighters Powers, Bassham to Present Fire Simulation Program Thursday, October 16 Our students will be treated to a first-hand look at a Fire Simulation Presentation on Thursday, October 16. Donnie Powers, school board member and father of senior student Hunter, will be demonstrating how to react if you find yourself caught in a fire. Chris Bassham, father of kindergarten student Holli, wanted to let the students and the community know the steps to take to be safe. Mr. Bassham and Mr. Powers are firefighters in Commerce. They have been presenting this program in the area for seven years, and house fires in kitchens have dropped 50% since then. Kids have become really good at learning and even educating their parents. We do everything we can to try to keep children safe, says Bassham. They teach kitchen safety and chemical safety. They also teach how best to behave if you are in a smoky room. Should you escape through your closed bedroom door? They teach how to know if you can safely do so. The community parents and others interested in learning fire safety are welcome to come out and see the fire simulation presentation. These firefighters know first-hand how things can go wrong and are determined to make sure that the children and other members of our community are safe. Page 3

5 FFA Plans Feast-Chili Cook-off, Show Clinic for November 22 Mr. Stanley says the FFA had a successful meeting on Thursday night. Students had lots of good ideas and were enthusiastic about the rest of this school year. One activity that everyone agreed on is the FFA Feast to be held on November 22 in conjunction with the FFA Show Clinic. First is the Show Clinic that day. Then the chili cook-off begins. Last year, steaks were served at the traditional feast, but this year, the chapter will have chili as the feast. Prizes will be awarded in the cook-off. October 24 is the deadline for FFA dues. Mr. Stanley said that there are some extra FFA t-shirts. They are $15 each, and it s first come, first serve. There is at least one shirt of each size except for the XXL. There are no XXL s left. Goat validation is October 21. Anyone needing me to take the goats and/or the students to the validation, let me know at least 24 hours in advance, said Mr. Stanley. The students have decided to begin gathering donation items now for the auction in May. If anyone has any donations for them, please let the FFA know. The FFA calendar has a change. The FFA Banquet will be on May 14 now to accommodate the senior class trip. The chapter received a thank-you note from Mrs. Cox for the dinner that was prepared for the faculty and staff during in-service week before school started. Help Sulphur Bluff Go Green Recycle your old, used printer and toner cartridges. Proceeds will be used to buy needed classroom materials. See Mrs. Weeks for donations or questions. Page 5
