3 Volume 17, Issue 25 Junior High students competed in the Youth Art Contest at Heritage Park Three 8th graders from The Bluff took 1st, 2nd, and 3rd places in the Pencil/Pen Drawing division of the contest. Heritage Park Contest Names 3 Winners from The Bluff Alexis Serrano placed first in the contest. Her drawing is an anime picture of two people hugging. As strange as this sounds, says Alexis, I dreamed about this picture. It is one that I had seen before. I drew it from memory. Alexis says that she would really like to be able to draw real people, but she cannot. For her, anime is the next best thing. Her mom, dad, and sister are all very artistic. She wants to study at the Paul Mitchell School of Cosmetology but knows that it is very expensive. Her ideal college experience would be out-of-state just so she can see other parts of the world. She says she must stay within the budget, though. She says she knows that her mom will support her in whatever she does. Alexis Serrano Kiersten Brown Kiersten Brown was awarded 2nd place. She drew Simba from The Lion King. She said that she looked at an old VCR case where there was a small Simba. I like to draw, especially when I m bored, says Kiersten. She says she starts lots of drawings and then stops working on them. Then she will come back to them later. That is how it was with this one Simba from the Lion King. I really wanted to finish that picture. I just really love lions. Sierra says that the whole family likes to draw. She said that her dad got first place in youth competition back when he was in the 8th grade. Mom is really good at drawing. Sierra, Malachi, and Ethan all love to draw. My two brothers have also painted. Kiersten s interests in the arts aren t just with drawing. She also loves music. Her brother Ethan is a songwriter Ethan and her dad. Mom is a singer too. Kiersten says she writes songs a little bit. I want a life lived to the fullest but to continue to live for God and what he wants us to do. I feel like writing is my calling. Kiersten has written a short novel. She says that she was told that a person should write the book that they want to read. So she did just that. It is set in medieval times. It is about a girl who goes on the journey of her life with her caretaker. I love history. You don t understand the present unless you know what happened in the past. I like reading time travel books, mysteries, murder mysteries, adventure, some romance. She likes contemplating which is best the book or the movie. She likes to write non-fiction also. She keeps a journal and writes in it every day. Kiersten also wants to write a book about a journey that a lion cub takes, but the story will parallel the struggles a person encounters. Kiersten would like to get a scholarship and go to Texas A&M and major in writing creative writing and journalism. I did soul-searching and wondered what would make my life have color. Teachers have told me that I write well. I know that I can express my feelings through my writing. She says that she is inspired by family members and would like to write their stories. Lexi Reyes was awarded 3rd place. She says that she just likes to draw. Her picture is of a bedroom with a formal dress displayed. Lexi s dad is Junior Reyes, a graduate of SBISD. Her mom is Kim (Edge) Williams, also a graduate of SBISD. Lexi s future plans include becoming an accountant. She is good at math and thinks she would like that work. She would be interested in going to college anywhere in the country. She plans to apply all over. Lexi said, I want to move away for a while, but eventually I will want to be back in the Sulphur Springs area. (See the drawings on the following page.) Page 3 Lexi Reyes
