Jackson Dailey and Dustin Lawson earned 2nd place in Applied Technology. The parliamentary procedure team of Bruce Marrero, Stephanie Hogue, Amanda Fowler, Josh Cannon, and Jackie Blake also earned 2nd place to allow them to advance. Jaime Formoso got a 3rd place in Fashion Design. Ester Marquez and Ashley Hale placed 6th in Illustrated Talk. Michelle Davila placed 3rd in Entrepreneurship. Minerva Marquez placed 3rd in Teach and Train. Maria Villalon was awarded Gold on her Leadership Opportunities Test. 2 Wednesday, March 3, Begins First Round of TAKS Testing Above Mrs. Green practices writing a composition with her 4th grade class in preparation for Wednesday s TAKS test. Slated to test that day are 4th and 7th grade writing, 9th grade reading, and 10th and 11th English/Language Arts (ELA). Other elementary tests come in April as follows: April 6-5th Grade Math; April 7-5th Grade Reading; April 27-3rd, 4th, and 6th grade Math; April 28-3rd & 4th grade Reading; April 29-5th grade Science. Below is the composition that Mrs. Green and her class wrote together as practice. Goldie the Goldfish Attention class, we are going to take a field trip today to a pet store, and buy a class pet, announced Mrs. Green. Everyone was extremely excited. They began talking and chattering about what kind of pet to purchase. A big fight began to break out, and Mrs. Green shouted out, Why don t we take a vote! Let me explain how the vote will work. You have the choices of a hamster, snake, or a fish. Mrs. Green told us. As we were voting five people raised their hands for a snake, three people for the hamster, and seven people voted for a fish. The fish wins, Mrs. Green announced. Let s board the buses for the field trip. On the bus everyone chanted over and over, We are getting a fish! After the chanting we decided what kind of fish to get. All at once, everyone screamed, Goldfish! The chanting started again until we arrived at Gertrude s Pet Shop. We all scampered off the bus and bolted inside. Meow, chirp, woof, gulp, is all we heard. Left and right, up and down, animals were everywhere. Suddenly the class spotted the perfect goldfish with fins like feathers, and we all ran over to it. The goldfish was bright orange with midnight black spots all over its body. Suddenly the class knew that this was the perfect fish. Mrs. Green said, How about we get this fish? Mrs. Green told the cashier we would take this fish with all of its supplies. After Mrs. Green purchased the goldfish everyone got back on the golden yellow bus, and we started back to school. We all took turns holding the goldfish, and we all thought of a name for our class pet. The bus was filled up with shouting of names, such as Goldie, Swimmer, and Larry. Goldie it is, Mrs. Green announced happily. As the bus pulled up to the school and the doors opened, and everybody dashed off into Mrs. Green s classroom. We sat the clear glass bowl on the leather brown table, and everyone crowded around to watch Goldie peek through the rocks. We all grew to love Goldie, but we wondered what our class pet would be in fifth grade.

3 Weather a Factor in Softball, Baseball, Track Mr. Ross, high school girls softball coach, says that weather is really interfering with the start of the season this year. He said they practiced this week in really cold weather just to get a chance to practice on the field when it was dry. The rain has already affected this weekend s tournament in Campbell. They won t be able to play and the tournament has been cancelled. Then next week s Tuesday, March 2, game against Ector was originally scheduled to be played in Ector but has been changed to Sulphur Bluff and will begin at 4:00. Next weekend s scheduled Leonard Tournament has been moved to Trenton, and the Lady Bears will begin play on Thursday, March 4, in Trenton with 3 games. Bears baseball begins their season next weekend, March 4-5-6, in the Roxton Tournament. There is a track meet in Prairiland on Monday, March 1 for varsity girls and boys. Then the junior high will have a track meet on March 4 in Prairiland. Fellowship of Christian Students Wednesday Mornings 7:30 A.M. 4 Volume 12, Issue 25 Gregg Martinez was a big hit at the Wednesday night Youth Rally held at the gym on February 17. He sang original songs and talked to the youth about how making the wrong choices can have lifelong consequences. The rally was sponsored by area churches. An estimated 175 people attended the event. Pizza was also served that night. 5 PTO NEWS By Kim Dorner PTO would like to thank those who came out for the Pizza Bingo night Saturday. There was lots of pizza, cookies and fun prizes that were enjoyed by everyone! Karen Self, PTO Vice President, presented a $ check to Mr. Ramirez and the FFA this week for the bridge that was constructed by the elementary playground. The kids love crossing over the bridge and not having to re-route their paths because of mud or water. Many compliments on the bridge have been made by parents and grandparents too. Thanks again for the time and effort that went into this project!

6 Volume 12, Issue 25 SMILES PROGRAM.. the mobile dentist will be at our school on March 25, This program provides exams, x-rays, and sealants if your child is eligible. We had several students benefit from this program when it was offered in the fall and hope to provide care for a larger number this spring visit. If your child saw the dentist in the fall they will be seen again on this date. If you missed the fall visit, be sure and get your paperwork in to receive dental care on the spring visit. Paperwork will be sent home with all students, but if you do not receive a form feel free to contact me at the school. Thank you, S.
