2 Page 2 Volume 12, Issue 14 Lady Bears on a Winning Streak December 1, Sulphur Bluff varsity Lady Bears 41 defeating Avery varsity s 39 at home. The girls played very hard tonight, but we had to fight again to the end. Maybe that s why they call us the "Fighting Bears. Our wins do not come easy for us and our losses are hard. The girls played great defense again to help us defeat Avery. Avery is a young team but a very competitive team that kept us on our toes and will give us a hard time for the next couple of years. Very proud of the Sulphur Bluff Lady Bears. This team has not given up yet, and we "Finished Strong" for a win, says Coach Evans of Tuesday night s game. Varsity players are Becca Naylor, Mikayla Potts, Hayley Lawson, Ashley Bryant, Ginger Thompson, Karissa Wolf, Jamie Goldsmith, and Brittany Andrews. The teams stayed pretty evenly matched throughout the game except for the first quarter when SB more than doubled the number of points Avery was able to put on the board. In the 1st quarter, it was SB- 11, Avery-5; 2nd quarter SB- 10, Avery 11; 3rd quarter SB- 11, Avery 13; 4th quarter SB- 11, Avery-10. The points scored by The Bluff during the first quarter definitely made the difference in the win. Scorers were Naylor 4, Lawson-4, Bryant 16, Thompson- 3, Wolf- 9, Goldsmith-5, Andrews- 2. Offensive Rebounds-Wolf- 4, Lawson-1, Goldsmith-1, Bryant-1. Defensive Rebounds-Andrews- 2, Wolf-8, Thompson-2, Potts-1. Assists-Lawson-2, Wolf-1. Steals -Naylor-1, Bryant-2, Lawson-1. November 23, 2009-Sulphur Bluff varsity Lady Yantis varsity. SB-35, Yantis-34. Kaitlyn Hancock and Kelsie Dorner joined the varsity for this game. Coach Evans said, We were behind the whole game but battled back in the fourth. The Yantis team received a foul in the fourth quarter in the paint which put us on the free-throw line for two along with #15 receiving a technical foul which turned the momentum toward Sulphur Bluff. We made three out of the four free throws and went on to out- score them in the 4th quarter along with great, great defense. We kept our composure and "Finished Strong" to win. The ladies did a great job!! In the 1st quarter, it was SB- 8, Yantis 9; 2 nd quarter SB-4, Yantis 9; 3 rd quarter SB-6, Yantis 10; 4 th quarter SB-17, Yantis 6. Scorers were Bryant 9, Thompson- 6, Wolf- 6, Goldsmith-7, Andrews- 5, Hancock-2. Offensive Rebounds- Bryant-3, Wolf- 3, Goldsmith-3, Thompson-1, Andrews-1, Hancock-2, Lawson-1. Defensive Rebounds-Bryant-1, Andrews-2, Wolf-2, Dorner-1, Hancock-2, Goldsmith-2. Assists- Hancock-1. Steals-Wolf-1, Bryant-2, Thompson-1, Potts- 1, Lawson-1. The Lady Bears will be in the Prairiland Tournament starting tomorrow and will play through the weekend. JV Lady Bears Defeat Avery Junior Varsity-December 1 vs. Avery at home SBJV-30, Avery JV 12. The JV girls played hard with only five players on the floor to complete the game with a win. They played good defense and ran the floor to score baskets off fastbreak plays. Impressed with the drive that these five players have and want them to progress to be quality athletes for varsity play in the future. Our JV Coach, David Toon, coached our girls to another good win on Sulphur Bluff soil, says Coach Evans. JV team members are Katelyn Brown, Ester Marquez, Stephanie Hogue, Kelsie Dorner, Virginia Rodriguez, and Kaitlyn Hancock. In the 1 st quarter SB scored 12, and Avery scored 0 points. In the 2 nd quarter SB put up 9, and Avery answered with 5. In the 3 rd quarter, The Bluff had 5 points as did Avery. In the fourth quarter the Lady Bears made 4 points to Avery s 2 points. Scorers were Hancock-12, Hogue-3, Brown-13, and Marquez-2. Next JH Game Mon., Dec. 7 at Home JH Lady Bears Work on Man-to-Man Defense We played a great 2nd half. The girls never gave up! We failed to come out and play hard defense the first half and they out-scored us. But we came out the 2nd half and played great defense to keep them from scoring open shots. I am now really confident in our man defense! We have beat them before, so we are hoping that we see them again later on down the road, said Coach Evans about November 30 s junior high girls game against Saltillo. Saltillo won Sulphur Bluff Junior High team members are Judy Brown, Lyndsey Calhoun, Shelby Williams, Sarah Williams, Angie Alvarez, Shelbi Hurley, Halie Waid, Ashton Sharp, Maycee Potts, Kaci Powers, Katelyn McDonald, Cheyenne Bryant, and Meagan Coberley. Lance Kitchens led all scorers with 8 points. Al Fowler and Hunter Powers both chipped in with 2 points a piece, and Luke Anderson scored 1point. Sulphur Bluff A Team- 34 Saltillo A Team- 31 Sulphur Bluff won a hard-fought game against a tough Saltillo team. The win puts the Bears with an overall record of 5-2. Once again Beta is asking for help with toys for tots. This year we have several children in our school district whose parents will need a little help with Santa. We hope that you will help us make their Christmas a little easier. There will be a note going out on Monday about ages, sizes and some wishes from Santa. There are about 8 students right now on Santa s list and we are checking to see if there are any younger siblings at home. The deadline for turning items or money to be used for the students needs to be turned in to Janiece Joslin or Tressie South by December 16 th. Thank you for your help.

7 Volume 12, Issue 14 SULPHUR BLUFF ISD RECEIVES 2009 USDA RUS GRANT Sometime early in March of 2010 Sulphur Bluff ISD will upgrade their exciting distance learning equipment to a state of the art Tandberg System thanks to the 2009 RUS (Rural Urban School) Grant received in November of this year. The 24,000 dollar system will allow the district to increase distance learning opportunities for its students, teachers and administrators. Today s society is built on technology, and information is more accessible than ever. Times are changing and education must adapt to meet the needs of students today. Much like education changed to meet the needs of the Industrial Age, it must also change to meet the needs of the Information Age. Distance learning is one of the ways education has adjusted in an effort to meet those needs. The following are some benefits of visual communication. STUDENT BENEFITS: Establishes a dialogue and exchange of ideas between students, educators, and subject matter experts who have differ rent viewpoints, experiences and strengths. Provides relevant examples of how classroom instruction takes on real-world application Extends educational resources into locations where few exist due to location or funding Prepares students for a futures as a global citizen, proficient with emerging technologies Addresses multiple learning styles when distance learning is combined with traditional methods of instruction Enable homebound or off-campus students to remain included and engaged Enables advanced or special needs students to take advantage of learning opportunities that the school alone cannot provide due to a lack of staffing. Funding, or expertise Provides students the opportunities to collaborate with peers from many cultures and communities Educator Benefits: Combats teacher isolation for educators in remote regions or educators who are the only subject-matter expert in their school Allows for timely, convenient professional development that does not incur time away from the classroom, personal travel time and additional expenses associated with travel Increases interactions with colleagues Provides access to resources and information not traditionally available, resulting in more relevant and engaging learning experiences School District Benefits: Provides educational equity for schools that are isolated due to funding or location Supports state and federal teacher and student performance requirements Provides experiences that schools might not have had access to through traditional field trips Enable team teaching and planning between schools Can be used for administrative purposes such as planned and as hoc meetings, which results in reduced travel time and expense, and time away from classroom/building Expanding curriculum offerings thorough remote instruction Enables schools to share resources and the cost of those resources Demonstrates district s commitment to providing unique and equitable learning experience Page 7
8 Volume 12, Issue 14 Mrs. Green s fourth grade class did writings over their most exciting adventure. Karlie Self s paper was a Star Paper, as Mrs. Green would call it. She is extremely proud of each and every one of her students writing. She says, Keep up the hard work and write those wonderful Star Papers. Fourth graders will be doing writing TAKS this year in February. In the Forest By: Karlie Self Vroom! How fast are we going on this golf cart? I exclaimed. My lips were going over my nose to my eyes! It felt like my face was going to blow right off. I don t know, Taylor is driving, so probably pretty fast! My mom shouted very loudly. We were going camping and everyone in my family knew Taylor wasn t the best driver in the world. Taylor is my eleven year old brother. He has thick, dark brown hair, wonderfully tan skin complexion, and leafy green eyes. Sometimes I think of him as the best brother in the world, but also at times I think he is the worst brother in the world. Crash! I found myself laying on the ground face first. I looked up and saw a lime green golf cart bolting across the forest. Hey wait you guys! I shouted, but they did not come. I sighed, I started to trudge back to the house when a storm hit. I ran as fast as I could to shelter before any zigzag lightening got me. All of a sudden I got smashed into a huge bolder by the wind, but it wasn t a bolder or anything like that it was a cave. I ran inside and made me a fire with a rock and a stick. Then suddenly I heard a horrid roar. I look up and saw a big brown grizzly bear. My eyes shot open right then. Oh, thank goodness it was just a dream. Then at that very moment my mom came and asked me, Ready to go camping? Watch out Selena Gomez, Sarah Harper is going to be the new actress in Hollyood.
