2 OXFORD SALOON SUPPORTS LOCAL BANDS By Rebecca Kelly-Hartnett The Oxford Saloon Snohomish, established in 1910, serves Snohomish County with hearty food and roaring entertainment was built in 1900 and for a decade was known as Blackman s Dry Goods store. It then became a saloon, and over the years it has changed owners and uses, but each owner incorporated Oxford in its name. The saloon is said to be haunted by past staff and patrons from the old days. I arrived on a Friday night where a local band, Moon Daddy performed. This was an enjoyable band with a Santana feel to it. They filled the dance floor on almost every song. Bar manager Brian Swanson greeted me and my friend, Rainey Boston, at the door and General Manager Brian Swanson gave us one of his best tables near the band and dance floor. He favored us, as well as the many other patrons, with excellent service See OXFORD Cont on page 8 2

3 Rocky & Kristine s KARAOKE CORNER Special Edition Karaoke Corner By: AUBREY BEAUDIN OUCH! THAT HURTS! As every karaoke singer knows, there is a broad spectrum when it comes to the level of talent we all have. You have the tone deaf who still enjoy singing on one side, and the professional-sounding talent on the other side. Most of us sit somewhere in between; average singers who can carry a decent tune but aren t exactly amazing. We are content to sing our songs, mostly for the pure enjoyment of singing, knowing we won t ever go anywhere with it. But what happens when someone amazing decides to sing a song you ve sung before, or a song you are hoping to try out? Some people can brush it off: Sure, that person sounds amazing, but I still enjoy singing it even though I m not as good. There are those of us, however, that feel like we just got hit with a large brick (and it felt really unpleasant). Last week, my husband decided he will never EVER sing Thinking Out Loud, by Ed Sheeran. Firstly, let me mention that he has an awesome voice, and I m not just saying that because I m biased; people compliment him all the time. He is above average on the spectrum. But he heard someone sing Thinking Out Loud who did it almost perfectly (although there were a few flaws - you get that without autotune!). This singer happens to be a professional musician, so of course he is going to sound professional. But it sealed the never going to sing deal for my husband because he felt his version would be inferior (I think his would be a little different, but hardly inferior). No matter what I tried to tell him, he was adamant. I wanted to push the matter harder, but then I remembered the previous week the same scenario basically happened to me. Someone sang Adele s Fire To The Rain much better than I could ever hope to do, and I was adamant about crossing that off my song list. Yes, I do have a list of songs I will never sing because I ve heard people sing them who would put my rendition to shame; Well, there goes that one! In the grand scheme of things, it s pretty silly to think this way, because it isn t the other singer s fault, nor are they ever aware of it. Honestly, so what if they sing it better than you can. This isn t American Idol. You aren t competing, although sometimes it can feel that way (especially when you are on the losing end). If you are like my husband and I, and nix songs because someone sings them better, I d love to tell you to knock it off; it isn t worth not singing a song you might enjoy. But then I would have to tell myself to knock it off, and I don t know if that s possible! It might be; maybe someday I can sing Fire To The Rain, on a night when the other singer isn t there (baby steps, right?). Maybe someday I can get my husband to sing Thinking Out Loud, because I know he can do it (and he sings other Ed Sheeran songs!). The only advice I can offer is to try and be the one who brushes it off; be bigger that those of us who can t! Getting hit with mental bricks hurts! 4 ARE YOU THE NEXT KARAOKE WORLD CHAMPION? By Joshua Baron The search for the 2017 Karaoke World Championships (KWC) has already begun around the world as well as in Washington State! The United States is again looking for a big year and hopefully will take home the gold at KW- CUSA! The Karaoke World Championships USA (KW- CUSA) in 2016 had a big year at the World Finals in Vancouver, Canada at the Edgewater Casino! Not only did Team Washington sweep at the National Finals against 80 other singers from around the USA, then the USA medaled in all divisions at the KWC World Finale. Team USA had stiff competition as they battled against singers from 20 different countries. KWC Team U.S.A. s Konomi Rivers and Lance Moore earned the gold at the KWC s First Duet Competition at Worlds. They showed so much chemistry, had flawless execution on staging and their melodic pitch blended together splendidly. Team USA wasn t done there, as we also won two silver Medals at the Karaoke World Finals. Gabriel Much and Laura Moreau both impressed the World Panel of Judges to take the silver in both Men s 4

5 male and top female will each win the Karaoke Cup, $500, a paid trip to Las Vegas (Hotel and Airfare), as well as recording time with Seattle Sound Productions ($1000 Value), and be the Washington State Champions earning a spot at the Karaoke World Championship USA National Finals being held at Vince Neil s Tatuado in Circus Circus Hotel. Not only will the two Washington State Champs win placement into the KWCUSA National Finals, but the Top 3 women and Top Three Men at the KWCUSA Washington State Finals will also earn spots at the KWCUSA National Finals as well. The Karaoke World Championships USA National Finals will feature approximately 100 singers from all parts of the United States, who are all trying to become the next US Champ to represent the United States in Helsinki, Finland November 14-18, Each one of these US Champions will win $1,000 at the National Finals (Duet Partners share their cash prize) as well as a trip to Hel- sinki, Finland (Airfare and Accommodations). The National Finals in Las Vegas are September 27 - October 1st, One other way to make it to the National Finals is by Video Submission. This gives the KWCUSA a way to hit all areas of the United States that are hard to reach. Video Submissions are available on the KWCUSA website and it is $40 but the singer must include two videos; Youtube links, Smule Sing!, Yokee App, and Red Karaoke are all accepted. Those submissions will be judged by the KWCUSA panel and the top ten men and top ten women will all earn a spot in the Karaoke World Championship USA National Finals in Las Vegas at Circus Circus. If you think you are the best of the best then it s time to prove yourself! To participate in the only sanctioned Karaoke World Championship please check out the website or check out the Karaoke World Championship USA pages on Facebook. and Women s Divisions! Silver Medalist, Gabriel Much, really showed a versatility going from a heavy rock song in Led Zeppelin, and then displayed his softer side with his emotional ballads and artistry. He nearly got the gold, but Ryota Kaizo, from Japan, beat him out but it was an incredibly beautiful sounding fight. Silver Medalist, Laura Moreau, won her medal with the amazing display she put on in making songs totally her own and telling her personal story along the way. Laura s personal spin on songs like I Put a Spell on You, Wild Horses, Change is Gonna Come really blew away the World Panel of Judges. While she was incredible in her performances, so was Gold Medalist Astrid Nicole from Panama who also gave her heart and soul on that stage. The panel of KWC judges scored on a 10 point scale on these four criteria; Voice, Technique, Artistry and Stage Presence. This is a true representation of what goes into being a World Champion as you need to be more than just a singer, you need to be the full package performer. So now the search is on for the 2017 Karaoke World Champion who would best represent the United States at the World Finals in Helsinki, Finland November 14-18, But to get there it is a hard battle. Singers must try out either by Video Submission on the page or by auditioning at a Qualifier at a local venue. Qualifiers have already started around the USA as well as in Cliff and MaryJane The Skagit! Washington State. LocalLove Seattle Area Venues such as Ozzies, Kate s Pub, Trenchers Bar and Grill, the SandBAR, and Twisted Lime as well as PJ s Pub in Spokane have already begun their KWCUSA Washington State Qualifiers. More venues are being added as this article is being written. When qualifying at your local venue, the singer pays a $10 entrance fee and sings Gretchen & Larry Are Karaoke their handpicked songgreat in front of a Folks! panel of KWCUSA Judges. The top singers of the night will move on to a finals at the venue they qualified at and then from there the top male, female and two wildcards will place into the KWCUSA Washington State Finals held at the Tulalip Casino on September 2 & 3rd, There approximately 60 singers from around the State will have 3 rounds to prove they are thesupports best in Washington State. The top David The Skagit Karaoke Show! 5

10 The Madison Avenue Pub Rocks Karaoke By Rebecca Kelly-Hartnett The Madison Avenue Pub is a lively sports and music bar with plenty of beer, tavern eats and karaoke most nights. They host the Evergreen Idol contest on Monday nights. The food and service from our waitress, Tara, was wonderful. Singers were in abundance and sang their hearts out for the crowd. Host KJ Cothedee with co-host David Dawson did a great job juggling the 25-plus singers. The sound was well managed and patrons really enjoyed themselves. I really enjoyed the venue which also offers pool tables and pull tabs for those who are feeling lucky. Here are some online reviews to spark your interest... Most people know the Madison is great for live music and karaoke, but the food s great too!... The staff is always friendly, the food portions are huge, not to mention tasty. Todd Saunders, left, celebrated his birthday with a song. Host KJ Cothedee and Co- Host David Dawson, top photo. Far left photo: Diane Walter pours her heart out at karaoke. 10
