Poets have an inherent gift of stripping bare pretenses and showing the beauty and harsh reality of life. My choice for my August book for the month is Damon Ferrell Marbut s Human Crutches. Like Marbut, many consider that life in the French Quarter of New Orleans a bar life. His book of poetry peels back the layers of the gay lifestyle and uncovers the splendor, drama and humor in a city known for its excesses. As a local, I have witnessed firsthand some of the exact things discussed on these pages. Met these people, seen their lives unfold before my eyes, both for the good and many tragically. Marbut s time as a bartender in many of the city s gay establishments have served him well as he has plenty of fodder for a series of books. The poems range in length and subject matter but all revolve around life in the Vieux Carre. Some of the more unique ones are even scribbled on bar napkins to add to their air of authenticity. Even though these characters described are fictional, we know them if you ponder the words. Many of the poems can shine a light on you, seeing yourself in many of these people. I absolutely adore when he calls New Orleans a third act city waiting to be written in the poem Know It All. Even in the most unpleasant poems in the book, the author s love and respect for the city that burns brightly. Whether he is talking about people s loneliness like in In Secret I Was With You or their desperation like in Dignity, Damon tackles many aspects of the Quarter life with both warmth and tenacity. I highly recommend reading this book, if only to see if you know any of these people. That also is part of the fun. Fashion Jewelry Trunk Show Everyone loves to sparkle, and in the gay community it is all about the glitter. Moan's Couture is hosting their Mardi Gras Truck Show on Saturday, September 13 from 5 8 pm at Albert Brown Salon. Moan s Couture is a premier seller of high end costume jewelry. This trunk show is an excellent way to see a wide variety of their jewelry especially since Chris Crouch, the designer, will be present for the meet and greet champagne reception. Guests are invited to try on the jewels as the designer will be able to answer questions and offer advice on selections for people who are planning costumes for next year s ball season. It is never too early to get your costume in order. Albert Brown Salon is located at 3424 Magazine Street. Moan's Couture will also be doing two trunk shows on Thursday and Friday, September 11 and 12 in Baton Rouge. For more information, go to Splash Glitz The Friday Night Before Mardi Gras is unveiling all the exciting new things they have planned for the 2015 Mardi Gras season at glittery pool side soiree entitled Splash Glitz at a private home located at 927 Burgundy on Saturday, September 13 from 2 5pm. This is a way for potential new hosts to learn more about the organization and the event while having food and drink in a beautiful courtyard. The theme this year for the FNBMG Bal Masque is Puttin on the Glitz and there will be a series of events leading up to the party celebrating this concept with this being the first one. There will be surprise guests entertainers, light snacks, cocktails and pool boys to service your every need, as well as a basket auction. Tickets are $25 for this event and may be applied to your host membership of $150. For more information, go to Tony s Top Picks for Southern Decadence Southern Decadence is one of the largest gay celebrations in the city attracting thousands of locals and visitors to this five day festival over Labor Day. If you are looking for some unique and fun things to do celebrating the holiday, here is my short list of cool things, some are ticketed but most of them do not cost anything. Please keep in mind this is just a few of the things you can do, for a more comprehensive idea, check out the Ambush advertisers and at for further information. This listing is not in any particular order, but all the events are amazing. 1. Get Radical - All aboard one of the coolest parties of the weekend when you attend the Radical Faerie flight POPXII. Fasten your leather harnesses and buckle up for this bumpy flight. If you ever want to see a unique krewe but cannot make it down for Mardi Gras, check out the Radical Faeries Ball as offer non-stop service from New Orleans to Rio de Janeiro, with layover at The Allways Lounge. The party starts at 9pm with performances by Debauchery and a late night dance party with DJ Tom Harvey. Tickets are $15 at the door and $10 if you are in costume. This is one wild ride. The Allways Lounge is located at 2240 St. Claude Avenue. 2. Halloween gets Decadent - Halloween New Orleans is throwing a Southern Decadence Leather or Champagne Party at Apres Lounge New Orleans. Toast Southern Decadence weekend with a glass of bubbly surrounded by lots of hot men in skin tight leather on Friday, August 29. Join HNO hosts and celebrants as you get details on the Halloween weekend events, October 23rd - 26th. This year is shaping up to be another memorable event. There will also be opportunities to pay your host dues and get more information on our cause. As always, all HNO profits benefit our incredible partner, Project Lazarus. Please remember that Host dues will go UP to $450 after Labor Day, so be sure to lock in last year s rate. There will be a $5 cover for non-hosts for this event. The event is from 6-9pm. Apres is located at 608 Fulton Street. For more information, go to 3. Leather Up Men The Lords of Leather is making the most of the weekend with non-stop action and adult festivities. On Friday, August 29, they will host a beer bust/block party at the Phoenix New Orleans from 9pm 2am. costing only $10 for all the draft beer you can drink. Then on Saturday, August 30 from 6pm-9pm, they are hosting the Decadent Behavior Party at The Eagle (which is located upstairs at the Phoenix). The cost is $30 in advance or $35 at the door, includes all the well drinks and domestic beer you can drink, the ever famous coat check, and admission for beer bust block party Saturday night. Also on Saturday starting at 10pm, the Lords are presenting their premiere event the Mr. Louisiana Leather Contest held directly across the street at Mag s 940. The admission is $10. If you are interested in strutting your leather clad self as a contestantplease visit or contact Gary Vandeventer for more information. You can also purchase tickets in advance for any of the events there. Finally from 9pm-2am, cross back over and join the Lords for their Saturday Night block party/beer bust/ Mr. Louisiana Leather After Party. It is also $10 for all the draft you can drink. The Phoenix is located at 941 Elysian Fields Avenue and Mag's 940 is directly across the street at Party With A Purpose - New Orleans Pride and The Krewe of Narcissus is presenting on Friday, August 29 from 6-9 pm at Lucky Pierre s a decadent party that incorporates an underwear auction. You can buy the underwear right off the boys, kinky! If you arrive early to the party, you can stake your spot on the balcony to get a great view of the Knights of Decadence parade that rolls down Bourbon Street. Tickets are $10 in advance and $15 at the door. There will be 3 for 1 drinks, music, underwear/ basket auction, 50/ 50 raffle, GAYFACE Photo Shoot, and much more. Advance tickets are $10 at (on the FUNDRAISERS page). Lucky Pierre s is at 735 Bourbon Street. 5. Everyone Loves A Parade New Orleans and parades are synonymous. And in full spirit of the holiday, there are two that weekend. The first one is the Knights of Decadence Parade which is a float parade that rolls on Friday, August 29 with the formation at 6:15pm on Elysian Fields and the parade starting at 7pm. The parade s route is through the French Quarter and has about 15 floats.
