2 By: Zach Smith Come out and support our basketball teams as they compete this February! Check out the events calendar on page 8 to see all scheduled upcoming games! The boys are approaching the halfway mark of the season. So far they have been successful but are still unsatisfied. After a disappointing loss early in the season to conference rival Boyne Falls, the team has become for focused on accomplishing their goals. Everyone on the team has agreed that it is crucial that they work on starting games out better along with running the offense more smoothly. So far they have been doing a good job as they have accumulated a record of 8-1 (6 The girls basketball team has been working very hard and has accomplished a lot throughout the past month! After a lot of work put in over break they competed against a tough competitor in Pickford. This was the first lost of the year for the varsity, and they knew they needed to play better on Wednesday. Wednesday came and it was a big conference matchup for both teams in Alanson. The JV girls fought hard and came out with a nail-biting win! The varsity played very hard and came out with a dominating win the same night. The game scheduled for Friday against Alba had to be rescheduled for January 29 th. The next week they competed at home against Brimley and consecutive conference wins). Everyone is looking forward to a chance at revenge against Boyne when they play at home February 6 th. In other news, new student Josh Julian has joined the basketball team and will be playing on the JV team. Josh will be that 5 th player that is needed and hopefully they will get some games in. The JV players will continue to dress with the varsity team on dates that they don t have games. after battling back to be down only two at half time, got their first home loss of the season. On Wednesday of that same week they took the long journey to Central Lake to compete in another non-conference game. They may have lost, but showed a lot of improvements throughout that game. At the end of a long week the Lady Comets hosted Mackinac Island and came out with a dominating victory. The next week brought two more conference games and two more conference victories for both teams. Keep up the great work! By: Lauren Bell Page 2

3 By: Zach Smith How has your season gone so far? I think it has gone well so far. Not exactly playing like I should be, but overall pretty good! What are your goals individually this season? Well my goals are basically to do well in each game. I hope to contribute both offensively and defensively. What are your goals for the team this year? As a team I would really love if we won conference, districts, and regionals (the big three I call it), and of course seeing the Breslin Center would be amazing! What is your favorite memory from this season? So far, probably seeing Anthony dunk in a game because it s not something you see very often. Are there any improvements you think the team needs to make in order to be more successful? Yes, I think we need to do what we do in practice. We run everything so smoothly and perfect, but in games it just doesn t seem to happen all the time. We also need to work on getting a good start in games. How does it make you feel knowing that this is your last year of basketball? It is sad, but you have to know it is going to happen eventually so you just have to make the best of it and move on. What do you like most about the team you are on? I like how we are all really good friends and we always make each other laugh and just have fun while be successful at the same time. Do not procrastinate on homework or any projects! What are you going to miss about high school? I think I am going to miss all the familiar faces I am used to seeing. I m not sure where I am going for sure, but I m definitely getting a degree in cultural anthropology! What is your favorite class? Future Focus! Are you excited to graduate? Yes What is your favorite high school memory? My favorite memory would be doing a costume class on my horse at the fair. She became a Native American Pony! By. Sabrina Lieghio Q: How has the season been going so far? A: It s been a great season so far. The goal is a Conference Championship. Q: What has been the highlight of the season so far? A: The highlight so far has been beating Alanson at Alanson and playing very tough against solid Central Lake and Pickford JV. Another highlight is seeing how much each player has improved over last year. Whether they played on JV or JH last year they are all achieving at a high level right now. Q: What can you expect in the future? A: Our competition can expect in-your-face de- fense pressure and our fans can expect an exciting show every game. Q: What s your record?
